NCLEX-PN vs NCLEX-RN: What's Actually Different?
NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN are separate exams under separate current test plans (in effect through March 31, 2029, so they cover 2027 test dates), with different Client Needs, different pharmacology labels, and different passing standards. PN is not a shorter or easier RN. LPN and LVN take NCLEX-PN; that exam is for U.S. licensure only.
Short answer
NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN are different NCSBN licensure exams with separate current test plans, both in effect through March 31, 2029, so they cover 2027 test dates. They share CAT, an 85–150 item range, a five-hour clock, and clinical-judgment measurement. They do not share the same Client Needs map, pharmacology category name, passing standard, or license. NCLEX-PN is used for U.S. licensure only. Passing one does not grant the other credential.
Two exams, two licenses, one shared CAT machine

LPN and LVN are jurisdiction titles for the practical/vocational role. They do not split the exam. Both take NCLEX-PN. Official registration states NCLEX-PN is U.S. licensure only.
Shared machinery: CAT, 85–150 items including 15 pretest items inside that range, five hours, and NGN case studies. Shared machinery is not a shared role. The PN content weights are not the RN weights.
Which exam do you take?
You do not pick between them like two versions of one test. Your nursing program and your nursing regulatory body (NRB) decide it. In general, a practical or vocational nursing program leads to NCLEX-PN and an LPN or LVN license, and a registered nursing program leads to NCLEX-RN. You apply to the NRB for the license you want, register with Pearson for the matching exam, and your Authorization to Test names that exam. Some NRBs have other pathways, so the eligibility your NRB grants is the final word.
An LPN or LVN who wants to become an RN usually completes RN education first, then needs NCLEX-RN eligibility from the NRB. A PN pass does not carry over to the RN exam, and an RN pass does not grant a PN license.

Passing standards are different numbers
- NCLEX-PN: −0.18 logits through March 31, 2029.
- NCLEX-RN: 0.00 logits through March 31, 2029.
Neither is a percent correct. PN passing score is the PN explanation. Do not call PN “easier” because −0.18 is not zero. Different role, different standard, different activity statements.
Changing RN versus PN after Pearson registration costs $50 USD in the United States on the current fee table. NCSBN says that change fee stays the same when the registration fee rises to $350 for registrations completed on or after February 1, 2027. Register for NCLEX-PN if PN is the exam you need.
How preparation mindset should differ
PN study: contribute, monitor, reinforce teaching, assign stable tasks, escalate. Practice PN decisions with Passy’s NCLEX-PN questions rather than borrowing an RN bank.
RN study: independently manage, delegate with RN accountability, parenteral therapies at RN weight.
If you already know which exam your NRB requires, study from that exam’s outline and keep the PN hub and the RN hub as separate study homes. Passing one exam does not grant the other license.
