Graduating High School in 2027? How NHA's 18-Month Provisional CPT Certification Works

High school students can take the NHA CPT exam before graduating and receive a provisional certification. Since October 1, 2026 it lasts 18 months from the exam date instead of 12. Here is how to time the exam around a 2027 or 2028 graduation, what you still need for the CPT, how to convert to the two-year certification, and the NHA pages that still say 12 months.

Short answer

Yes. If you're scheduled to graduate from an accredited high school or GED program, you can take the NHA CPT exam up to 18 months before graduating and receive a provisional certification, as long as you meet NHA's other requirements, including 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live people. For exams passed from October 1, 2026, the provisional certification lasts 18 months from the exam date; it was 12 months before. After graduating, send NHA proof to convert it to the two-year certification. It can't be renewed or reinstated.

NHA has a route built for high school health science students: a provisional CPT certification you can hold before you have your diploma. NHA changed its length on October 1, 2026, which matters most to students graduating in 2027 and 2028. The rules below are from NHA's August 2026 announcement, its FAQ on the change, the Candidate Handbook updated October 5, 2026, and its help center, as checked on October 28, 2026.

NHA made the same change for six other certifications (CCMA, CMAA, CET, CEHRS, CBCS and CPCT/A) and added a 12-month provisional pathway for pharmacy technicians. Its FAQ is explicit that the extension isn't retroactive: if you passed before October 1, 2026, you "will remain subject to the provisional certification rules that were in place" on your exam date, and the change "will not add time to an existing candidate's provisional period."

NHA's stated reason is to fit high school and career and technical education timelines, and its announcement notes that many programs can now offer the exam in the junior year.

Timing the NHA CPT exam around a 2027 or 2028 graduation

Two dates have to line up: your exam date can be no more than 18 months before your graduation date, and the provisional certification expires 18 months after your exam date. The handbook puts the responsibility on you: you must make sure your exam "is scheduled on a date that is no more than eighteen (18) months" before graduation.

Examples (Passy's arithmetic; your school's actual graduation date is what counts):

Expected graduationEarliest exam date that fitsIf you test on this dateYour provisional CPT expires
June 2027Any date from October 1, 2026February 2027August 2028
December 2027October 1, 2026, when the 18-month rule beganNovember 2026May 2028
June 2028December 2026March 2027September 2028

In every case the safe move is the same: convert as soon as you have your diploma, not near the expiration date. NHA's FAQ adds that if you don't expect to finish high school within the provisional period, you aren't eligible to apply yet.

What a high school candidate still needs for the NHA CPT

Provisional certification relaxes only the diploma requirement. NHA's FAQ says it "does not eliminate the education requirement," and everything else applies:

  • The registration questions. You'll be asked whether you've completed high school; if not, you confirm you expect to within 18 months. Your answers decide whether the certification is provisional.
  • A training or work pathway. For most students, that's the phlebotomy training their school offers; NHA's pathway calls for a program from an accredited or state-recognized institution or provider.
  • The CPT's own requirement. Evidence of at least 30 successful venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live individuals (NHA). You'll need that evidence again when you convert.
  • You register yourself. Parents, teachers and school staff aren't allowed to register for you, and NHA recommends a personal email address so it can reach you after you leave school.
  • School deadlines. If you test at your school, register at least 8 days before the exam date (NHA).
  • Accommodations. An active IEP or 504 plan can support a request; the NHA CPT accommodations guide covers the process.

The exam itself is the same 120 questions in 2 hours that every candidate takes. If you'd rather spread your review over a term, the planned 180-day NHA Phlebotomy access covers a full school semester; checkout isn't open yet.

Converting a provisional CPT to the two-year certification

Once you graduate, send NHA your proof. The handbook lists what a conversion needs:

  • A letter with your name, current address, current email address and your provisional certificate number (or a copy of the certificate)
  • Proof of graduation: a high school diploma, GED certificate or other proof of completing a high school equivalency program
  • Written proof that you met the training or work experience requirement
  • For the CPT, evidence of at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals

NHA's step-by-step article lists the graduation documents it accepts: a high school transcript, an unofficial transcript that shows the graduation date, a copy of the diploma, GED test scores or certificate, or an affidavit from the school confirming graduation. College transcripts aren't accepted. Email the documents to info@nhanow.com or fax them to 913-661-6291, with the name on your NHA account and your certification number; the two-year certification shows in your account within 2 to 3 business days. Your provisional number is in My Achievements and carries a "P."

Teachers can also convert eligible students themselves with NHA's conversion tool for CTE programs.

After conversion, the expiration date "will be based on the initial testing date," so converting late doesn't buy extra time on the two-year certification. From then on you renew like any other CPT holder.

When a provisional CPT runs out

The handbook is firm: a provisional certification "cannot be renewed or reinstated," and if it lapses before you graduate or before you convert it, "you will be required to retake the NHA certification exam." That means registering again and paying the exam fee again. NHA's FAQ on the 18-month change words this more loosely (the certification "will not remain active" and you follow "the applicable NHA process"), so plan on the handbook's rule, the retake. NHA's help center also says provisional certificate holders aren't part of NHA One, its certification maintenance plan, "at this time"; it says they'll be enrolled at a later date.

If a lapse does send you back to the exam, you'd be testing on the current version, and planned NHA CPT practice is grouped by the same five domains as the exam.

Where NHA's handbook and help center still say 12 months

NHA's own pages don't all agree yet. As read on October 28, 2026:

Passy's reading: the dated announcement, the FAQ and most of the handbook make 18 months the rule for exams passed from October 1, 2026, and the 12-month lines look like text that hasn't been updated. Three practical safeguards: go by the expiration date NHA shows for your certification in My Achievements; ask NHA if it doesn't match 18 months from your exam date; and if you test more than 12 months before graduating, get that confirmation in writing before you rely on the longer window. Converting as soon as you graduate leaves the most room before the deadline.

Your next step as a high school NHA CPT candidate

Check your graduation date with your school, then count back 18 months to find your earliest exam date, and confirm your program will log your 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks. The eligibility and application guide walks through registration, and the free study planner and 20 practice questions help you start. When an explanation doesn't click, AI Rescue, planned for full NHA CPT prep, puts it in simpler terms.
