Passed the NHA CPT? Your Certificate, Verification, Digital Badge and Credential Rules
After you pass the NHA phlebotomy exam, NHA emails you that your certificate is ready, lists you in its public Verification Tool and issues a digital badge through Accredible. Here is when the certification becomes official, what employers can and can't see, how to use the CPT credential after your name, and the dates to put in your calendar.
Short answer
After a passing score, NHA emails you that your certificate is ready. Log in at nhanow.com and open My Achievements to see your certification number and expiration date and to print the PDF. Your name and credential then appear in NHA's public Verification Tool, which employers and state agencies can check; it never shows scores or failed attempts. NHA also issues a free digital badge through Accredible. While the certification is current, you may write CPT after your name. On the pre-externship and employer routes, the certificate waits until NHA receives confirmation that your training is complete.
A passing score is the end of the exam and the start of a two-year credential with its own rules. Most of what happens next is in two parts of NHA's Candidate Handbook, updated October 5, 2026: the pages on scoring and confidentiality, and the pages on awarding and maintaining the credential. NHA's help center fills in the practical steps. All of it was checked on October 28, 2026.
The first week after you pass the NHA CPT
| When | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| When results post | NHA emails you that you can print your certificate | Log in at nhanow.com and open My Achievements |
| Same visit | Your certification number and expiration date appear | Write both down; employers and states ask for the number |
| After you pass | Your name and credential are listed in NHA's online Verification Tool | Check that your name appears as you expect |
| When issued | NHA sends you a link to your digital badge, issued through Accredible | Accept it and keep the link |
| Before you apply for jobs | Employers and state agencies can now confirm the credential | Add it to your résumé and check your state's rules |
How quickly results post depends on where you tested; the NHA CPT passing score guide covers results timing and the score report.
Your NHA certificate and when it becomes official
The handbook says that if you pass, "you will receive an email notifying you that you can print your certificate by logging into your NHA account, clicking on 'My Achievements' and following the prompts." From there you can view your certification number, see your expiration date, and download or print the PDF (NHA). Certifications are valid for two years and "expire on the date provided on the certificate."
Three situations change that timing:
- Pre-externship route. You learn whether you passed, but NHA assigns no certificate number until your school confirms you finished the externship. You have 90 days from the exam date to finish it and have the school notify NHA.
- Employer training route. The same hold, with 180 days to finish on-the-job training and have your employer notify NHA.
- Provisional certification. A high school candidate's certificate carries a "P" and lasts 18 months, for exams passed from October 1, 2026, until it's converted. The provisional certification guide covers conversion.
On the first two routes, the certificate's effective date is the day NHA assigns the number, and "at that time, an employer or regulatory agency will be able to confirm that you are certified with NHA." If the confirmation doesn't reach NHA in time, NHA voids the score and you retake the exam. If that happens, planned NHA CPT practice covers all five domains for a second attempt.
How employers and state agencies verify an NHA CPT
NHA's accreditor requires it to let anyone verify a certified person's credentials, and the handbook says NHA does so "through the Verification Tool posted on its website." When you pass, your name and certification are listed there. What the tool and NHA will and won't share:
- Shared: your certification status, certification number and the current status of a certification (NHA).
- Not shown: your exam score and any failed attempts. Scores go only to you and, where applicable, your school, unless the law requires otherwise, and they're never given over the phone.
- For employers checking many people: NHA offers bulk verification through its certification portal, matching each person's last name and certification number from a spreadsheet (NHA). That's why the name on your NHA account matters: a mismatch with the name an employer uses can make a lookup fail.
Keep your NHA profile current. The help center lists email address, mailing address, organization, military service and personal information as details you can update yourself, and notes that you can't edit your profile while you have an active exam application (NHA).
Your NHA digital badge on Accredible
Since November 4, 2025, NHA has used Accredible for all digital badges and transcript requests (NHA). Badges you accepted earlier through Credly remain available. NHA's badge page lists a badge for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician and explains that each credential sits in a credential wallet and can be verified by current or prospective employers through its own unique URL. Accredible's help pages, linked from NHA's, cover sharing the badge on LinkedIn, adding it to an email signature and changing its privacy settings.
The badge can matter for a state application. California's Laboratory Field Services asks applicants whose certifying organization provides a digital credential to complete Form LAB 112, which asks for the credential URL, and upload it in place of a wall certificate. The California CPT I guide explains the rest of that application.
Writing "CPT" after your name: NHA's credential use rules
The handbook allows it on two conditions: you passed the exam and you "have a current valid credential." Then you may include "the NHA program abbreviation" behind your name, in contexts consistent with professional credentialing, which NHA lists as office signage, résumés, websites, business cards, presentations, introductions and electronic signatures.
The limits are just as specific. NHA credentials "may not be used to endorse any product, service or company, or as a company, product, or brand name," and misuse can lead to disciplinary review, including revocation. Once a certification expires, the "current valid credential" condition no longer holds.
Because "CPT" also names the Current Procedural Terminology code set maintained by the American Medical Association (45 CFR 162.1002) and California's state CPT I and CPT II certificates, a practical approach on a résumé is to spell it out once: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), National Healthcareer Association, with your certification number available on request.
NHA One and college credit, both linked to your certification
Two programs attach to the certification itself:
- NHA One. NHA's help center says certified professionals are enrolled automatically when they certify or recertify, except provisional certificate holders (NHA). Keeping its benefits, including unlimited NHA continuing education (excluding Specialty CE), takes a $95 payment each year, and members whose payments are current renew every two years at no additional cost (NHA). The 2027 renewal guide compares it with the standard $195 renewal.
- ACE college credit. NHA's college credit post lists the CPT exam as approved by the American Council on Education for 2 lower-division credits, and notes that each exam has specific eligibility dates, so check NHA's ACE credit page for the version you passed. The digital transcript comes through Accredible (since November 4, 2025), the credits expire if you don't accept the transcript, and whether a college awards them is always up to the college.
Dates to put in your calendar after the NHA CPT
- Expiration date (from My Achievements): two years after the certificate's issue or effective date.
- CE deadline: 10 continuing education credits before that date. NHA lets you renew early without penalty.
- Grace and reinstatement: less than 30 days after expiration you can still renew normally; after that, reinstatement costs $391.50 with 15 credits, up to one year.
- Retake line: more than a year after expiration, you retake the exam. Should that happen, the planned 30-day NHA Phlebotomy access fits a focused refresher before a retest; checkout isn't open yet.
- State credential: California, Louisiana, Nevada and Washington each run their own credential, with their own deadlines. The 2027 state rules guide has each one.
Your next step after passing the NHA CPT
Print the certificate, save the badge link, and copy your certification number and expiration date somewhere you'll see them in two years. If you'll work in a state with its own phlebotomy credential, start that application now, since the state step can take longer than the exam did. And if a classmate is still preparing, the 20 free NHA phlebotomy practice questions and the study planner are a good place to start, with full NHA CPT prep planned for launch tagging every question to a test plan domain.
