Renewing Your NHA CPT in 2027: 10 CE Credits, the $195 Fee and What Happens If You're Late

An NHA CPT earned or renewed in 2025 comes up for renewal in 2027. Here is what NHA asks for (10 continuing education credits and a $195 fee, or NHA One's $95 annual payment), where the credits can come from, and the 30-day, one-year and retake lines if you miss the date.

Short answer

An NHA CPT certification lasts two years, so one earned or last renewed in 2025 comes up for renewal in 2027. Before the expiration date on your certificate, complete 10 continuing education credits (2 hours of CE equal 1 credit) and pay NHA's $195 renewal fee; NHA One members whose $95 annual payments are up to date renew at no extra cost. Less than 30 days late, you can still renew normally. From 30 days to a year late, reinstatement takes 15 credits and $391.50. After a year, you retake the exam.

NHA treats renewal as part of holding the credential: its Candidate Handbook says that failing to meet the recertification requirement before your expiration date "will nullify the credential." The rules below come from NHA's renewal page, the handbook updated October 5, 2026, and NHA's help center, as checked on October 28, 2026. No change to them had been announced for 2027.

Is your NHA CPT due in 2027?

NHA certifications are valid for two years from the issue date and expire on the date printed on the certificate. To see yours, log in at nhanow.com and open My Achievements, which shows your certification number and expiration date (NHA).

A few cases change the date you'd expect:

  • Earned in 2025, or renewed in 2025. Two years later is 2027 (Passy's arithmetic). The certificate's date is the one that counts.
  • Pre-externship or employer training route. The certificate's effective date is the day NHA assigned your certificate number after your school or employer confirmed completion, not your exam date.
  • Converted provisional certification. The two-year certification's expiration date is based on your original exam date, not the date you converted.
  • Still provisional. A provisional certification can't be renewed; it has to be converted. The provisional certification guide explains how.

What NHA asks for: 10 CE credits and a renewal payment

The CE rule is the same in the handbook and the help center:

  • 10 continuing education credits per two-year cycle, relevant to your field. Two hours of CE equal one NHA credit (NHA).
  • No carryover. Credits beyond 10 in one cycle can't be applied to the next.
  • One set of credits for several certifications. NHA's renewal page says the 10 credits apply toward one or more certifications, so someone holding the CPT and the CCMA needs 10 in total. NHA charges a separate fee for stacked certifications.
  • Any time before expiration. NHA's CPT page says you can complete the credits any time before your certification expires and that there is no penalty for renewing early. The handbook lets you submit CE "either annually or all at once."
  • Review time. NHA typically reviews CE submissions within five business days; a submission picked for audit can take longer.

Where the 10 credits can come from

NHA's own CE courses are recorded to your account automatically. Every NHA-certified professional gets a select number of NHA CE courses at no charge, NHA One professionals and legacy NHA members get the full library except Specialty CE, and other courses are for sale.

NHA "generally accepts CE from other sources." For an outside course, choose Upload External CE in your account, enter the title and the hours spent (credits are calculated automatically), and upload the certificate of completion (NHA). Only official documentation counts. NHA also notes that states may have their own CE rules that affect which courses they accept, so if you hold a state credential, check whether one set of courses can serve both.

$195 at renewal, or NHA One's $95 a year

Since July 2026, NHA has run two ways of paying for renewal side by side:

Standard renewalNHA One
What you pay$195 renewal fee every two years$95 each year, on your certification anniversary
Renewal itselfPay the $195 when you renewRenew every two years at no additional cost, if payments are up to date and your CE is complete
CE libraryA select number of NHA courses freeUnlimited NHA CE, excluding Specialty CE
If payments lapseNot applicableNHA charges $195 plus the cost of CE to renew

Sources: NHA's renewal page and its help center on NHA One. Two years of NHA One payments come to $190 (Passy's arithmetic), close to the $195 standard fee, so the difference is mostly the CE library.

Who is in NHA One matters for 2027. NHA's help center says NHA One launched in July 2026 and that certified professionals are enrolled automatically "when they certify or recertify," that nobody can sign up mid-cycle, and that provisional certificate holders aren't included (NHA). Your certification anniversary, the yearly reference date for NHA One payments, is the date you earned or last renewed the certification (NHA). So a CPT earned in 2025 started before NHA One existed; check your NHA account to see which path you're on before your 2027 renewal. NHA's renewal page ends the standard steps (pay the $195) with "You are now part of NHA One!", so after a 2027 renewal you'd be on the NHA One plan for the next cycle; the pages Passy read don't say when the first $95 payment falls. Either way, the 10 CE credits are required. Legacy NHA members, from the membership plan NHA launched in March 2025, aren't moved into NHA One and follow their own renewal steps.

Renewing late: the 30-day, one-year and retake lines

NHA's renewal page sets three thresholds after the expiration date:

How lateWhat NHA requiresCost
Less than 30 daysNormal renewal: 10 CE credits$195, no additional fees
More than 30 days, less than 1 yearReinstatement: 15 CE credits$292.50 renewal fee + $99 reinstatement fee = $391.50
More than 1 yearNo reinstatement; re-register and retake the examThe full exam price

The handbook describes the first line as a one-month grace period. Once you're past it, reinstating costs $196.50 more than renewing on time (Passy's arithmetic), plus five extra credits.

Past the one-year line you'd sit the exam that's current then. Unless NHA announces another update, in 2027 that's the version launched on January 7, 2026, and NHA's crosswalk lists tasks that weren't on the exam you may have passed in 2025. If that's where you are, planned NHA CPT practice by domain shows which newer tasks need review, from copayments and EHR entries to point-of-care testing.

Renewing your NHA CPT online, step by step

From NHA's renewal page and help center:

  1. Log in at nhanow.com and check your expiration date in My Achievements.
  2. Complete or upload 10 CE credits. NHA courses: open Continuing Education, choose a course, select "View Content," then "Take Quiz." Outside courses: Upload External CE with your certificate of completion.
  3. Select "Renew Certifications" in the left menu of your NHA dashboard.
  4. Pay the renewal fee, unless you're an NHA One professional whose payments are current.
  5. Check My Achievements again for the new expiration date (a practical step; keep a copy of the certificate).

Address changes go through your NHA account, not the renewal form.

State phlebotomy credentials renew on their own schedules

An NHA renewal doesn't renew a state credential, and a state renewal doesn't renew NHA's. As checked on each agency's pages on October 28, 2026:

  • California. Laboratory Field Services moved phlebotomy certificates to an annual cycle in 2026, with 3 hours of approved continuing education in the 12 months before each renewal. Certificates issued or renewed in 2025 with a 2027 expiration keep that date until their 2027 renewal. LFS also says that renewing a national certification is optional and handled with the certifier directly (CDPH). An employer may still ask for a current NHA certification.
  • Louisiana, Nevada and Washington each have their own renewal cycle, fee and CE rule, summarized in the 2027 state rules guide.

If your NHA CPT lapsed more than a year ago

The handbook's rule is to re-register, retake the exam and pay the full exam price, which NHA shows at checkout in your NHA account. Registering means attesting to the eligibility rules again, so a practical first check is whether your training (within the past five years) or your supervised work experience still qualifies. Because the exam changed in January 2026, start with NHA's current test plan rather than your old notes. If your review will be short and focused, the planned 30-day NHA Phlebotomy access suits a refresher before a retest; checkout isn't open yet.

Your next step for a 2027 NHA CPT renewal

Open My Achievements today and write down your expiration date. A practical schedule is to finish your CE about two months before that date and renew at least 30 days ahead, since NHA charges no penalty for renewing early. If you also hold a California, Louisiana, Nevada or Washington credential, put its renewal date next to NHA's. And if you'll be retesting rather than renewing, full NHA CPT prep planned for launch covers the five domains of the current exam, with the free practice questions as a quick starting check.
