NHA Phlebotomy Practice Tests: The Official Ones, Free Options and What Your Score Means
NHA's own CPT practice gives you six practice test attempts and more than 600 questions: a timed baseline, two practice tests with rationales and a timed final. Here is what each one includes, how to get them, what is free, how to check any other practice test against the test plan, and what a practice score can't tell you.
Short answer
NHA's official CPT practice is six practice test attempts with more than 600 questions: a timed 2-hour baseline test, two practice tests with two attempts each and answer rationales, and a timed 2-hour final test that NHA says replicates the exam experience. Focused Review follows every attempt. NHA's handbook warns that practice questions aren't exam questions and that a high practice score doesn't guarantee a pass. NHA's free study aid is the test plan, and Passy offers 20 free original practice questions; anything sold as real exam questions is content candidates agree not to share.
Only NHA publishes official practice tests for its Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Every other practice test, Passy's included, is written from the public test plan and not from the exam itself. That doesn't make other practice useless, but it changes what a practice score means. Here is what NHA says its own practice includes, what you can use for free, and how to read any practice result, as checked on NHA's help center and its test plan, FAQ and checklist documents on November 6, 2026. The Candidate Handbook quotes come from the edition updated October 5, 2026, read in an archived copy captured on October 20, 2026.
NHA's official CPT practice tests: six attempts in three kinds
NHA's CPT Customer FAQ says its current CPT prep includes "over 600 practice questions across 6 total practice test attempts." The FAQ sets them out like this:
| NHA practice test | Attempts | Timed | Rationales | Focused Review | Items |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline practice test | 1 | Yes, 2 hours | No | Yes | 100 + 20 pretest |
| Practice tests 2 and 3 | 2 each, 4 in total | 8 hours | Yes | Yes | 100 |
| Final practice test | 1 | Yes, 2 hours | No | Yes | 100 + 20 pretest |
NHA gives each kind a job:
- Baseline. Take it before the study guide or any other practice, to see where you start. NHA's point is that you can then measure growth against the final test
- Practice tests 2 and 3. NHA calls these formative and says to take them "any time during exam preparation." They are the only ones that show rationales, so they are the ones to learn from
- Final. NHA says it "replicates the exam experience" and should come right before the certification exam
The baseline and the final allow one attempt each and show no rationales, so don't open either one casually. The FAQ's table lists "8 Hours" for practice tests 2 and 3 where the baseline and final show the exam's 2 hours, and doesn't explain the figure further.
Which version to use
The FAQ is specific: candidates testing on or after January 7, 2026 need the "new CPT Online Study Guide 3.0 and Practice Tests," and since that date only the updated version is available. NHA's update log, read on November 6, 2026, lists that launch and nothing newer for the CPT, so these are also the practice tests for a 2027 date unless NHA announces a change. The guide to the NHA phlebotomy exam in 2027 explains how you'd know.
What sits around the practice tests
The same FAQ describes the online study guide that goes with them: six modules, each with an end-of-module quiz that has unlimited attempts and rationales, and about 12 hours of material if you work through everything. The update log adds two changes from June 2026: embedded calculators were being added to applicable NHA practice tests to match the exam, and Claire AI, an assistant that can summarize, explain, make flashcards and generate a question from NHA's own content, became available in NHA products for learners.
How to get NHA's practice tests, and the refund rule
Through your program. NHA's FAQ is written largely for schools, which enroll learners in a course that carries the prep and assign the tests. If you're in a program, ask what it has already given you before you buy anything.
On your own. NHA's purchasing article says to log in to your NHA account, open the Store under Shop, choose the profession and pick a study package. It names the online study guide plus the online practice test as its best practice, and notes that a printed study guide is shipped and may carry a shipping fee. Prices appear in that store. Passy couldn't read them on a public NHA page on November 6, 2026, so none are quoted here.
Two rules are worth knowing before you click:
- Buying is optional. NHA's Candidate Handbook (updated October 5, 2026) says preparation materials are "not required to become eligible to sit for an NHA exam" and don't "guarantee a passing score"
- Opening it ends the refund. NHA's refund policy allows returns only within 28 days of purchase and only for unused products, and "if you have accessed any online content the Product is deemed Used." Items inside a package can't be refunded one at a time
Focused Review: what happens after each NHA practice attempt
NHA describes Focused Review as a complimentary feature of its practice assessments that gives "immediate remediation for questions answered incorrectly." The FAQ's table shows it is available after all three kinds of CPT practice test, including the two that show no rationales. NHA's how-to article explains how it works:
- It appears with your score report as soon as you finish a practice test, and you can reopen it later from My Courses in your NHA account
- Its table of contents takes you to the competencies behind the questions you missed on that attempt
- Choose Topics filters it to subtopics where your percent correct is at or below a level you set
- You can export it to PDF, all of it or chosen topics
- NHA's advice is to spend time in Focused Review before you take the next practice test
Fitting six NHA practice attempts into your study weeks
NHA's study materials article says the baseline "should be used prior to study to set your study outline" and the final "as the last practice test prior to your NHA exam," with a score review and Focused Review between attempts. Its Learner Readiness Checklist (revised 10/26) puts practice assessments with Focused Review in between from about 30 days out, and the final practice assessment "in a realistic exam scenario" one week before the exam.
A schedule that follows those points, in Passy's words:
| When | Attempt | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Before you start studying | Baseline, timed | Find your weakest domains before you plan |
| After your first pass through the content | Practice test 2, first attempt | Check what stuck, then read every rationale |
| About 3 weeks out | Practice test 3, first attempt | A set you haven't seen, for an honest reading |
| About 2 weeks out | Second attempt on test 2 or 3 | Recheck the topics Focused Review flagged |
| About 1 week out | Final, timed | NHA's rehearsal "in a realistic exam scenario" |
| Spare | One second attempt | Keep it for a weak domain, or for a retake |
NHA's documents don't say whether a second attempt on the same practice test repeats the same questions. If it does, part of a higher second score is memory, so treat a test you haven't seen as the more honest measure. The NHA phlebotomy study plan places these attempts inside 4-, 6- and 8-week schedules.
Six attempts go quickly when you study for more than a month, and you still need fresh questions between them: a bank of 1,300 NHA CPT questions is planned for launch, with an explanation for every answer. Checkout isn't open yet.
What an NHA practice test score can and can't tell you
NHA's handbook says "achieving a high score on the practice test does not guarantee you will pass the certification exam," that "the items from the practice exam are not the same questions that are on the certification exam," and that, like the exam, practice questions are "linked to the major content areas."
That gives three practical rules:
- Don't convert a percentage into an NHA score. The handbook says exam scores are scaled from 200 to 500, weighted by question difficulty, with 390 to pass. No practice percentage maps onto that scale. The NHA CPT passing score guide explains why 390 isn't 78%
- Read results by domain, not just overall. The real score report rates each domain Above, Near or Below the passing standard, and a good total can hide a weak domain
- Watch the trend and the clock. Rising domain results on questions you haven't seen, at about a minute a question, are better evidence than one high score
Reading results by domain is easier when the tool does the sorting, and progress tracking planned for NHA CPT prep shows your accuracy in each of the five domains and names the one to work on next.
Free NHA phlebotomy practice: what there is
- NHA's test plan. NHA's free study aid is its CPT test plan, which lists every task and knowledge statement the exam can ask about. It has no questions, but it is the checklist every practice question should trace back to. The NHA CPT test plan guide goes through it domain by domain
- What your school has paid for. NHA prep provided by a program costs you nothing extra, so check before you look elsewhere
- Passy's free questions. The 20 free NHA phlebotomy practice questions are original, explain every answer, and are meant as a quick first read, not a prediction: 20 items can't tell you whether you'll pass
- Free PDFs and shared flashcard sets. These vary from careful to wrong, and most don't say what they were written from. Run the checks below before you trust one
The NHA documents cited here don't describe a free official practice test. The six attempts come with prep that you or your program pay for.
Checking any other NHA phlebotomy practice test
Practice from other publishers isn't NHA's, so check it against NHA's documents before you trust its score:
- Does it follow the current test plan? The plan has 100 scored questions in five domains: Routine Blood Collections 28, Safety and Compliance 26, Patient Preparation 20, Processing 14 and Special Collections 12. NHA has used it for exams since January 7, 2026. Material written for the earlier exam follows the previous plan
- Is it full length? The exam is 120 questions in 2 hours, including 20 unscored pretest items
- Does it claim "real" or "actual" exam questions? At registration, every candidate attests that exam questions are the copyrighted property of Assessment Technologies Institute and that copying, reproducing or disclosing them is forbidden, and the handbook lists "memorizing or reproducing test questions" as a violation. It treats any effort to retain exam content as theft of NHA's intellectual property. A seller claiming actual exam questions is either wrong or selling something candidates promised not to share
- Do the explanations name a rule you can check? A clinical answer should trace to something public, such as CLSI's order of draw or OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard
The fourth check matters most when you get a question wrong. Being told the right letter teaches little; being told the rule lets you answer the next version of the question. In full prep, AI Rescue is planned to restate any NHA CPT explanation in simpler terms or give you a fresh question on the same idea.
Rehearsing the full NHA CPT sitting
Your last practice test should feel like the exam: one sitting, 120 questions, 2 hours, no phone and no notes. NHA's final practice test is built for this, with 100 items plus 20 pretest items and the exam's 2-hour limit, and you get one attempt at it. The guide to taking the NHA CPT at home, at a PSI center or at school covers the room rules to copy when you rehearse.
After the rehearsal, sort your misses by type: a fact you didn't know, a step out of order, a scenario you misread. That list is your last week of study.
If you have already taken the exam and didn't pass, the handbook suggests using practice tests to check the tasks in the domains your score report rated Below or Near, and to confirm the ones rated Above. The NHA CPT retake guide turns those ratings into a 30-day plan. NHA's final allows a single attempt, so for another full-length sitting, the timed mock exam planned for NHA CPT prep runs 120 questions in 2 hours and is scored at the end.
Your next step with NHA phlebotomy practice
If you haven't taken any practice yet, start with a baseline today. At the exam's pace of a minute a question, the 20 free NHA phlebotomy practice questions take about 20 minutes. Then put your attempts on a calendar with the free NHA phlebotomy study planner, and if you're choosing between NHA's tests and others, run the four checks above before you trust any score.
