How to Register for the SAFE MLO Test: NMLS Enrollment, the $110 Fee and Prometric Scheduling
Pay for the SAFE MLO Test in your NMLS account ($110), then book a Prometric seat inside your enrollment window. Online proctoring is limited to approved accommodation candidates, and a late change or no-show forfeits the fee. Here are the steps, the deadlines and the ID rule.
Short answer
You register for the SAFE MLO Test in two steps. In your NMLS account, create a test enrollment window for the National Test with Uniform State Content, accept the Candidate Agreement and pay the $110 fee. Then book a seat with Prometric, NMLS's test vendor. Prometric says that since October 1, 2024, online proctoring has been available only to candidates approved for testing accommodations, so most people test at a center. Enrollment fees aren't refundable, and a late cancellation or a no-show closes the window, so you'd pay $110 again.
Signing up for the SAFE MLO Test involves two organizations. You enroll and pay with NMLS, which opens a testing window, and then you book a seat with Prometric, which runs the test centers. Nearly every way to lose your $110 happens after you've paid, through timing, so it helps to know the deadlines before you start.
Before you pay for the SAFE MLO Test
NMLS's enrollment guide lists two things you need before you can pay: an NMLS account and your individual NMLS ID number. If you don't have them yet, create the account first; the ID is the permanent unique identifier you'll keep for your whole career.
Two decisions are worth making before you pay, too:
- Finish your pre-licensing course first. NMLS's licensing guide says you shouldn't schedule the test until your required pre-licensing education is complete. The testing FAQ says a course isn't technically required before the test, but the license still needs the 20 hours, and the window you're about to open has an end date
- Ask for accommodations before you book. Prometric's NMLS page says requests go to NMLS's accommodations team, and that approval for personal items such as medication or medical devices in the testing room must come before you schedule
Enrolling for the SAFE MLO Test in NMLS, step by step
These steps come from NMLS's individual enrollment quick guide (updated July 25, 2022). Screen names may have changed since, but the order hasn't: Prometric's NMLS page says every enrollment must be paid for and opened in NMLS before you can schedule.
- Log in to your NMLS account and open the MLO Testing & Education tab
- Choose Create New Test Enrollment Window, then National Test with UST
- Add the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Test to your cart
- Click Proceed to Candidate Agreement, read it and click I Accept
- Click Pay Invoice and pay the $110 enrollment fee
NMLS's handbook lists the fee as $110 for the national test (with Uniform State Content), as of its April 5, 2021 test specifications. There's no separate state test to buy.
How long your SAFE MLO enrollment window lasts
NMLS's enrollment guide (updated July 25, 2022, the latest version we could read) says that once a test is paid for, you have 180 days to schedule and take it; if you don't test within that time, the window closes and you must pay for a new one. NMLS's FAQ adds that the window normally starts on the day you pay, but after a recent failed attempt it starts on the first day after your waiting period. Check the dates NMLS shows for your own window after paying, since that's the record that counts. If you're timing your study around those 180 days, you can check how a planned 180-day access period would line up with your enrollment window.
Booking your SAFE MLO appointment with Prometric
Once the enrollment is paid, go to Manage Test Appointments in the MLO Testing & Education tab and choose to schedule; NMLS's guide says you then continue on Prometric's website. Prometric's NMLS page also takes scheduling by phone at 1-877-671-6657, and says individual test centers can't schedule, reschedule or cancel appointments for you. Seats depend on what each center has open, so book early in the window rather than near its end.
Can you take the SAFE MLO Test online?
Usually not. Prometric's NMLS page says that since October 1, 2024, online proctored testing has been available only to candidates who qualify for testing accommodations. Some NMLS pages still mention online proctoring without that limit, including a 2025 version of its FAQ and the chapter summaries in its testing handbook, so you may see both statements. If you aren't approved for accommodations, plan on a test center. NMLS's FAQ notes that you can test at any Prometric center, even if you'll be licensed in a different state.
At a center you're given a basic four-function calculator and a whiteboard for scratch work. The SAFE MLO format guide covers the timing and what's on screen, and full SAFE MLO prep planned for launch includes a timed 120-question mock exam to rehearse center conditions.
What the SAFE MLO Test costs, and the ways to lose the fee
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Enrollment for the national test with Uniform State Content | $110, paid in NMLS |
| You change or cancel on time (see the deadline below) | The enrollment window stays open, so you can book another date in it |
| You change or cancel late, or don't show up | The window is closed and the fee is lost; you must pay for a new window before booking again |
| The window runs out before you test | The window closes; you pay for a new one |
| You fail and retake | Each attempt is a separate paid enrollment, after a waiting period |
| You want a refund or to transfer the fee | NMLS says enrollment fees are non-refundable and non-transferable |
The change deadline. NMLS's FAQ says to cancel or reschedule no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time two business days before your appointment, as did its 2021 Content Area FAQs. Prometric's page phrases the same rule as 2 calendar days before. The two readings can differ by days: for a Monday appointment, two business days back is the previous Thursday, while two calendar days back is Saturday. Go by the earlier date, and change the appointment through Prometric's website or phone line, not the test center.
If you fail, the SAFE MLO retake guide explains the 30- and 180-day waits and how the new window's start date is set.
The SAFE MLO ID and name-match rule
NMLS's FAQ asks for one current, unexpired, government-issued ID with your photograph and signature, and the name on it must match your NMLS account exactly. Prometric adds that photocopies aren't accepted. If your NMLS record and your ID don't match (a new last name, a missing middle name), fix it before test day rather than at the check-in desk.
A SAFE MLO registration checklist
- Create your NMLS account and note your NMLS ID
- Finish your pre-licensing course, or at least schedule the test after its end date
- Request accommodations, if you need them, before booking
- Create the enrollment window, accept the Candidate Agreement and pay $110
- Book a Prometric seat early in the window, on a date that leaves room to reschedule
- Put the change deadline (two business days before, 11:59 p.m. ET) in your calendar
- Check that your ID matches your NMLS name exactly
Before choosing the date, work backward from it with the free SAFE MLO study planner. If you want to know what structured practice would add to that plan, you can see what full SAFE MLO prep is planned to include; checkout isn't open yet.
