SAFE MLO Test Passing Score: What 75% Means and When Your Result Becomes Official

You need at least 75% on the SAFE MLO Test, a minimum set by federal law for every state. See what that means out of 115 scored questions, why the 5 pretest items make every question count, and when your on-screen result becomes official in NMLS.

Short answer

You need a score of at least 75% to pass the SAFE MLO Test. The SAFE Act and Regulation H set that minimum, so it's the same in every state. Only the 115 scored questions count; the 5 unscored pretest questions don't affect your result, but you can't tell which they are. By plain arithmetic, 87 correct out of 115 clears 75% and 86 doesn't. In most cases your score and result appear on screen when you finish, you leave with a printed score report, and NMLS posts the official result about 72 hours later.

The SAFE MLO passing score isn't set by a testing committee or a state board. It's written into federal law, which makes it one of the few numbers in mortgage licensing that's identical everywhere.

Where the SAFE MLO 75% comes from

The SAFE Act says you haven't passed the qualified written test unless you achieve "a test score of not less than 75 percent correct answers to questions" (12 U.S.C. 5104(d)(3)(A)). Regulation H repeats it as a condition for any state license: a test score of not less than 75 percent correct on the NMLS-developed test (12 CFR 1008.105(e)(1)).

Two consequences:

  • Every state uses the same pass mark. NMLS's FAQ says that, by law, everyone seeking a state license, or currently holding one, must pass with a score of at least 75%. A state can add requirements to its license, but it can't license you on a lower score
  • There's no curve to hope for. The score is the share of correct answers; how other candidates did that day doesn't change yours

How many SAFE MLO questions you can miss

Only the 115 scored questions count toward your score. NMLS's handbook says the 5 pretest questions don't affect your score or your pass/fail result, appear in random order, and aren't identified.

Correct answers out of 115 scoredPercentageResult against 75%
8674.8%Below
8775.7%At or above
9280.0%At or above
9885.2%At or above

On that arithmetic you can miss up to 28 of the 115 scored questions. NMLS's pages don't describe any rounding, so treat 87 correct as the minimum rather than hoping 86 rounds up.

You can't use the pretest questions to your advantage, either. Any 5 of the 120 might be the unscored ones, so a question that feels experimental may well count. Answer everything: the score counts correct answers, so a question left blank can only cost you.

A margin matters more than the cutoff. Practice scores that sit right at 75% leave no room for a hard set of questions on test day, so it helps to see where you land under real timing; you can rehearse the full 120 questions under time with the planned mock exam.

When you get your SAFE MLO result

NMLS's FAQ describes three stages:

  1. On screen. The test is scored electronically, and in most cases your score and pass/fail result appear on screen as soon as you finish
  2. On paper. Before you leave the test center, the test center administrator gives you a printed score report. NMLS's handbook includes a sample in its Appendix C
  3. In NMLS. About 72 hours after the test, NMLS posts the official score and result in the Testing Information section of your record's Composite View

The NMLS posting is the official record. If the on-screen result and the posting ever seem to disagree, contact the NMLS Call Center (1-855-665-7123, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, per the handbook) rather than relying on the printout.

If you passed the SAFE MLO Test

  • You can't take it again. NMLS's retake policy says candidates who pass aren't permitted to retest, so there's no "improving" a passing score
  • One pass covers every state. NMLS's FAQ says passing meets the test requirement of state agencies, so adding a state later doesn't mean another test
  • The pass has a shelf life. Under the SAFE Act, going 5 years or more without a valid state license, not counting time as a registered MLO, means retaking the test. NMLS's FAQ applies the same 5 consecutive years if you pass but never get licensed or registered

From here, the license application is next; the MLO license guide lists the steps.

If you didn't reach 75% on the SAFE MLO Test

A fail means a new paid enrollment and a wait: 30 days after a first or second failed attempt, and 180 days after a third. The SAFE MLO retake guide explains the cycle and how to work out your date.

Keep the printed score report and write down, while it's fresh, which kinds of questions slowed you down. Before you rebook, it helps to know which content areas are dragging your score; accuracy tracking for each of the five content areas is planned for full SAFE MLO prep.

How the SAFE MLO pass rate fits in

NMLS reports a first-time pass rate of 53% as of December 31, 2024. That's an overall figure for first attempts, not a prediction for any individual, and NMLS's pages don't break it down by state or by preparation. The guide to how hard the SAFE MLO Test is looks at what drives it.

A next step for your SAFE MLO score

Start with the free SAFE MLO practice questions and note your percentage against 75%, then repeat with fresh questions closer to test day. Questions you get wrong are the fastest way to find a weak rule, and in planned full prep, missed questions are saved in Fix It for another try until you get them right.
