PCCN Review Courses and Books: AACN's Official Options and How to Check Any Other
AACN sells one official PCCN review course and lists 30 references it uses to validate exam answers. Here is what each official resource costs, what the review course includes, which books sit in the bibliography, what is free, and a four-point check for any other course, book or study guide.
Short answer
AACN sells one official PCCN review course: an online, modular course that costs $159 for AACN members or $199 for nonmembers as of November 6, 2026, and half that when bought with your exam application. For books, the PCCN Exam Handbook lists 30 references AACN uses to validate exam answers, including AACN Essentials of Progressive Care Nursing (5th edition, 2023). AACN Certification Corporation doesn't approve, endorse or require any prep product, so check any course or book against the current exam: 150 questions and 12 test plan categories, in use since February 6, 2024.
Two kinds of PCCN review material carry AACN's name: the online review course AACN sells, and the books in the bibliography AACN uses to check exam answers. Everything else, from commercial courses to study guides, is someone else's reading of the same test plan. This guide lists what the official resources are and cost, as read on AACN's pages on November 6, 2026, and gives you a way to check any other material before you pay for it. It ranks no products and recommends no publisher.
What AACN offers for PCCN preparation
AACN's PCCN page lists its own preparation resources under "How to Prepare":
| AACN resource | What it is | Cost (checked November 6, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| PCCN Exam Handbook | Test plan, testable nursing actions, 9 sample questions with an answer key, exam bibliography | Free download |
| Practice exam, free trial | 7 days, 30 questions with rationales | Free, one time |
| Practice exam, Basic | 30 days, 150 questions with rationales | $35 member, $45 nonmember |
| Practice exam, Premium | 180 days, hundreds of questions, content-area exams | $75 member, $90 nonmember |
| PCCN Certification Review Course Online | Online review course with CE credit | $159 member, $199 nonmember |
| Books and bundles | Titles sold in AACN's store | Varies by title |
The same page carries a disclaimer that applies to every row, including AACN's own products: "AACN Certification Corporation does not approve, endorse, or require for eligibility use of any specific exam preparation products." You can sit the PCCN without buying anything.
AACN has announced no new PCCN test plan for 2027, so the current plan is the one to check material against until AACN's pages say otherwise.
AACN's PCCN review course: price, content and CE credit
The PCCN Certification Review Course Online is the only review course AACN lists on its PCCN page. From its product page:
- Price. $159 for AACN members and $199 for nonmembers. The item is nonrefundable.
- Half price with your application. AACN offers a 50% discount when you buy the course at the time of your PCCN exam application. By Passy's arithmetic that is $79.50 or $99.50; confirm the amount at checkout.
- Aligned to the current plan. AACN says the course "aligns with the current PCCN Exam Test Plan." Its syllabus lists the same ten Clinical Judgment categories and seven Professional Caring and Ethical Practice competencies as the exam, in the same 80% and 20% split. The page gives 2024 as the year published.
- Format. A modular online course with an overview of all exam topic areas, practice questions, video for selected content and case scenarios, test-taking tips, repeatable modules and PDF handouts.
- CE credit. 14.0 CE contact hours, or CERPs in Category A, awarded only if you complete the entire activity and its evaluation. The page says this CE activity expires on January 31, 2027, so if the contact hours matter to you, check the page for the current CE dates before you buy.
- Both pathways. AACN describes it as a resource for the Direct Care and the Knowledge Professional pathways.
The course page does not say how long your access lasts or how many practice questions it contains, so ask AACN if either decides it for you.
Review courses explain content; they don't replace timed questions. If you are weighing the course against a question bank, you can see the 850 explained questions and 470 flashcards planned for full PCCN prep, though checkout isn't open yet.
Can your employer pay for the PCCN review course?
Possibly. AACN's certification discounts page says that under its organization discount, for employers and AACN chapters that buy 30 or more exam vouchers, "each voucher recipient will receive individual access to a free institutional license for the review course associated with each exam type purchased." PCCN is on the list of eligible exams.
So before you pay $159 or $199, ask your manager or education department two questions: does the hospital buy AACN vouchers, and does it reimburse review courses? The PCCN exam cost guide covers the voucher and group prices for the exam itself.
PCCN review books: what the exam bibliography lists
Page 16 of the handbook is the "PCCN Exam Bibliography," headed "References Used for Item Validation." It names 30 references. AACN doesn't rank them, doesn't map them to test plan categories and doesn't tell you which to buy. The grouping below is Passy's, for orientation only:
| Group | Titles as the handbook lists them |
|---|---|
| Progressive care | AACN Essentials of Progressive Care Nursing (5th ed., 2023); AACN Procedure Manual for Progressive and Critical Care (8th ed., 2023); Core Curriculum for Progressive and Critical Care Nursing (8th ed., 2022) |
| Critical care nursing texts | Critical Care Nursing: Diagnosis and Management (9th ed., 2021); Critical Care Nursing: A Holistic Approach (12th ed., 2023); Introduction to Critical Care Nursing (8th ed., 2020); Manual of Critical Care Nursing (8th ed., 2022) |
| Professional practice | Synergy for Clinical Excellence: The AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care (2nd ed., 2017); AACN Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments (2nd ed., 2016) |
| Quick reference | Mosby's Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference (16th ed., 2022); Saunders Nursing Drug Handbook 2023 |
The rest of the list includes medical-surgical nursing, cardiology, neurology, oncology, palliative care, wound care, gerontology and bioethics texts, plus the American Heart Association's 2020 resuscitation guidelines.
Three points keep the list in proportion:
- It is a validation list, not a reading list. AACN uses these references to confirm that each exam answer is supported. No candidate needs all 30.
- Editions move. The handbook notes that "more current versions may be available," and that many references are sold through AACN's store.
- One comprehensive text is usually enough. A practical approach is to pick one progressive care text you will actually read, then use the testable nursing actions checklist in the PCCN study plan guide to decide which chapters deserve your hours.
A four-point check for any PCCN course or book
The PCCN changed on February 6, 2024, and material written for the earlier exam may still be in circulation. Before you buy any course, book or study guide, check it against the current handbook:
- Does it describe 150 questions in 3 hours? The current exam has 150 items, 125 of them scored. AACN's launch announcement says the previous exam had 125 items in 2½ hours, so material built around 125 questions was written for the old exam.
- Does it follow the test plan for exams on and after February 6, 2024? Look for the current weights: Cardiovascular 20%, Multisystem 15%, Respiratory 14%.
- Does it cover all 12 categories? Ten are body systems. The other two are the Professional Caring and Ethical Practice groups, worth 20% of the exam, so check that a clinical review book covers them too.
- Does it use generic drug names? The handbook says AACN is moving to generic names only in exams and practice products, though some items may still show both names during the transition.
Material that fails the first two points isn't useless for physiology, but it will misjudge what the exam emphasizes. To study by the current plan, you can see how planned PCCN practice follows all 12 test plan categories and compare that list with any table of contents.
One more warning applies to any seller: avoid anything that claims to contain real PCCN exam questions. The PCCN practice questions guide explains what official practice is and what the honor statement says about sharing or reconstructing exam questions.
Free PCCN review material, including the study guide PDF
Searches for a free PCCN study guide PDF have an official answer: the PCCN Exam Handbook is a free PDF from AACN. It holds the test plan, the testable nursing actions, the Synergy Model definitions, nine sample questions and the bibliography above. Other free starting points:
- AACN's practice exam trial. One free 7-day trial with 30 questions and rationales.
- Passy's free tools. The free PCCN practice questions are 20 original questions with explanations, and the free PCCN study planner builds a schedule from your exam date.
Free material is enough to learn the exam's structure and find your weak categories. Whether you then need a course, a book or a larger question bank depends on what those weak categories are.
Course, book or questions: choosing by your gaps
These are editorial suggestions, not AACN rules:
- Content gaps across several systems (for example, you rarely see renal or endocrine patients): a structured course or one comprehensive text covers ground fastest.
- Solid content, slow or inconsistent on questions: timed practice with every option explained does more than rereading.
- Weak on the 20% professional practice share: start with the handbook's Synergy Model pages and the PCCN Professional Caring and Ethical Practice guide before buying anything.
- Want contact hours as well: AACN's review course awards 14.0 CE contact hours on completion; check the CE expiry date on its page first.
Most candidates combine one content source with a question source. When full prep opens, AI Rescue is planned to put any PCCN explanation in simpler terms for the answers that don't click.
Your next step in choosing PCCN review material
Download the handbook and run the four-point check on anything you already own. Then take the free practice questions as a diagnostic, list your two weakest categories, and choose one content source and one question source that cover them. Ask your employer about vouchers and reimbursement before you pay for either.
