ANCC vs AANPCB PMHNP: Comparing Exam Structure, Fees, and Prep Fit
Compare the ANCC and AANPCB/NPCB PMHNP exams by question count, content structure, and current fees, then check which certification and preparation fit your plans.
Short answer
ANCC and AANPCB/NPCB offer separate PMHNP certification exams: ANCC lists 175 questions, while NPCB lists 150. ANCC organizes its blueprint into five domains; NPCB uses Assess, Diagnose, Plan, and Evaluate. Compare the current fee for your membership category and verify the certification requirements for your intended license and employment before choosing; question count alone does not establish which exam is easier.
Are ANCC and AANPCB/NPCB offering the same PMHNP exam?
ANCC and AANPCB/NPCB offer separate PMHNP certification exams: ANCC lists 175 questions, while the NPCB PMHNP page lists 150 multiple-choice questions. Both cover psychiatric-mental health practice across the lifespan, but their content outlines organize that work differently.
The AANPCB website at aanpcert.org currently presents the Nurse Practitioners Certification Board, or NPCB, brand, checked November 3, 2026. This comparison uses NPCB for that board and ANCC for the American Nurses Credentialing Center. When searching for “AANP vs ANCC PMHNP,” check the certification board named on the exam page; a membership discount does not identify the exam you are buying.
Start by writing down the exact board and examination you are considering. Then compare its eligibility requirements, outline, and fee against your own records and plans. Do not select a question bank while the examination itself is still unclear.
How do the question counts and blueprints differ?
The official pages and ANCC outline give the following comparison, checked November 3, 2026:
| Feature | ANCC PMHNP-BC | NPCB PMHNP |
|---|---|---|
| Total questions | 175 | 150 |
| Primary content structure | Five domains organized by knowledge and practice areas | Four domains organized as Assess, Diagnose, Plan, and Evaluate |
| Largest listed domain | Advanced Practice Skills: 41 scored questions | Assess: 45 questions in the blueprint table |
| Published blueprint total | 150 scored questions, plus 25 unscored pretest questions | Domain counts total 135; the exam page separately states 150 total questions |
The NPCB page used here does not label the remaining 15 questions as pretest questions. Its total exam length and the sum of its domain counts should therefore remain separate figures. There is no need to guess the label to compare the published outlines.
ANCC's five domains are Scientific Foundation; Advanced Practice Skills; Diagnosis and Treatment; Psychotherapy and Related Theories; and Ethics, Legal Principles, and Cultural Care. NPCB's four domains describe stages of clinical work. Those headings are different ways to organize content, not proof that a topic appears on only one exam.
For the detailed ANCC breakdown, use the PMHNP-BC five-domain guide. If you choose ANCC, full PMHNP-BC prep planned for launch is organized around its five content domains.
Does either exam omit professional or psychotherapy topics?
No such shortcut is supported by these outlines. ANCC names psychotherapy and ethical/legal/cultural care in its primary domains. NPCB lists psychotherapies, ethical and legal issues, scope, professional boundaries, cultural care, and pharmacology among its knowledge areas, even though those subjects are not all primary domain headings.
That matters when evaluating a claim such as “one exam is clinical, so I can skip professional topics.” Before removing anything from your study plan, check both the main domain heading and the detailed knowledge list beneath it. A shorter list of headings is not a shorter list of responsibilities.
Use a simple outline exercise: choose one topic, such as pharmacology or professional boundaries, find it in the official document for your selected exam, and record where it belongs in your study notes. Repeat this for areas you were planning to skip.
Nor does the question-count difference establish an easier exam. These sources do not provide a matched comparison of difficulty. Choose on verified requirements and preparation fit, rather than treating 150 versus 175 questions as a prediction of your result.
How do current application fees compare?
Compare the category you actually qualify for. ANCC's initial certification prices and NPCB's initial electronic examination prices were checked November 3, 2026:
| Candidate category | ANCC initial fee | NPCB initial electronic exam fee |
|---|---|---|
| Nonmember | $395 | $315 |
| Eligible AANP member | $340 | $240 |
| Other listed member categories | ANA $295; AANP student $290; APNA $220; ISPN or GAPNA $340 | Eligible AAENP member $240 |
The categories are not interchangeable. ANCC excludes ANA e-membership from its ANA discount, and its discounts cannot be combined. NPCB identifies eligible AANP or AAENP membership for its $75 discount. Do not assume that a membership discount listed by one board is also available from the other.
If you already hold a qualifying membership, compare the corresponding fee. If you would join solely for the discount, add the membership dues to your budget before deciding. The table does not include dues, travel, or preparation costs, and it compares initial fees rather than retake or cancellation charges.
For a future appointment, including one in 2027, verify prices and membership eligibility again before paying. The ANCC PMHNP-BC cost and budget guide explains that side in more detail. Keep preparation purchases separate: full PMHNP-BC prep planned for launch includes 1,700 questions for ANCC-focused study.
What should you confirm with your program and licensing board?
Use the comparison to narrow your choice, then verify the requirements that determine whether it works for you. The exam pages cited here do not establish identical acceptance by every licensing board or employer.
Before paying, complete this checklist:
- Name the intended license and jurisdiction. Find the licensing board's current certification requirements and confirm the exact examination and population focus it recognizes.
- Check your education against the selected board's rules. Ask your program which records demonstrate the required coursework and clinical preparation. Do not carry ANCC's requirements over to NPCB without checking NPCB's own eligibility instructions.
- Resolve any employer requirement. If a particular employer or position matters to your decision, request its current certification requirements using the exact board names.
- Verify the application path. Read the selected board's approval and scheduling instructions before building a test-date plan.
- Save the answer before purchasing prep. Keep the relevant official requirements or written clarification with your planning notes.
For the ANCC route, the PMHNP-BC eligibility guide walks through the education and documentation questions. If a requirement remains unclear, resolve that specific question with the relevant board before submitting payment.
How do you choose prep that matches the exam you select?
Match preparation to the named examination and its current outline. Shared psychiatric content does not make an ANCC course automatically aligned with NPCB's blueprint, or the reverse.
For ANCC, return to the official-outline explanation in the PMHNP-BC exam guide and mark the areas where you need review. Try the 20 free PMHNP-BC practice questions, then use the free PMHNP-BC study plan to organize your next study sessions. Use practice to identify work to do, not as evidence that one board is easier.
When comparing rehearsal resources, check their question count against your chosen exam. For candidates selecting ANCC, a 175-question mock exam is planned for launch as part of full PMHNP-BC prep. The immediate next step is to confirm your certification route, save its current outline, and build your study plan from that document.
