Is the PMP Worth It?
A way to decide whether the PMP is worth it for you: check what your target jobs ask for, add up the real costs in time and money, read PMI's salary claims for what they are, and know when to wait.
Short answer
The PMP is worth it when the roles you are aiming for ask for it and you already meet PMI's experience requirement. The costs go beyond the exam fee: 35 hours of training, your study time, possible retake fees, and renewal every three years with 60 professional development units and a fee. PMI's salary figures come from its own 2025 salary survey of project professionals, so check postings for your target role and location before relying on them. If you do not yet have the months of experience, the CAPM or more experience comes first.
A job-posting check before you commit to the PMP
General claims about the PMP's value matter less than what the jobs you want actually ask for. A short, structured check answers that better than any average.
- Pick your target. One job title, or two closely related ones, in the location or remote market you would really apply to.
- Collect 20 current postings. Use more than one job board and skip duplicates.
- Sort each posting into one column: PMP required, PMP preferred, PMP or an equivalent credential, project experience asked for with no certification named, or nothing about either.
- Note other credentials that appear more than once, so you can see what competes with the PMP in your market.
- Read the result as a share. What matters is how many postings name the PMP at all, and how many make it a requirement.
Here is a worked example with made-up numbers, to show the arithmetic only. Ana, a fictional operations lead, collects 20 postings for "IT project manager" in her city. Six list the PMP as required, seven as preferred, two accept "PMP or equivalent," and five name no certification. Fifteen of twenty mention the PMP, and six would screen her out without it. For Ana's target, the PMP is close to a job requirement. If her count had been two mentions out of twenty, the money and hours would be better spent elsewhere for now.
Repeat the check when you change targets. The answer for "construction project manager" in one city can differ from "product delivery lead" in another.
What the PMP costs in time and money
The exam fee is only one line. As checked on October 27, 2026, PMI's sources describe these costs:
| Cost | What PMI's sources say |
|---|---|
| Training | At least 35 hours of project management training, completed before you apply. An active CAPM waives it. From December 1, 2026, live classes count only from PMI Authorized Training Partners, China Registered Education Providers, or eligible accredited academic programs |
| Exam fee | PMI's PMP page showed $405 for members and $655 full price on October 27, 2026. The handbook says prices vary by membership status and regional location. The PMP exam cost guide explains what changes the amount |
| Membership | Optional. Member pricing applies only if you join before you pay the certification fee. PMI's membership page did not show the dues amount, so check it at checkout |
| Retakes | Up to three attempts in one year, with fees paid again for the second and third. PMI's PMP page shows no retake amount |
| Rescheduling | US$70 plus taxes to reschedule or cancel within 30 days of the appointment. No changes within 48 hours |
| Study time | Not set by PMI. It depends on your gaps. See how long to study for the PMP |
| Renewal | 60 professional development units every three years plus a renewal fee. PMI's CCR Handbook says the fee depends on membership and region and shows the current amount in your myPMI dashboard, not on its public pages |
Time is the cost people underestimate. You need the training before you apply, possibly up to 90 days for an audit, and then a study plan that fits inside a one-year eligibility window. Ask your employer early whether it reimburses training or exam fees, since that can change the whole calculation.
Study materials are a cost line too, and they vary more than the exam fee. Full PMP prep on Passy is not on sale yet. Its page lists the one-time access periods and prices planned for full PMP prep, so you can put a figure in this row before you decide.
What PMI says about PMP salaries, and how to read it
PMI's PMP certification page, as checked on October 27, 2026, says PMP holders report a 17% higher median salary, cites a U.S. median salary of $135,000, and counts more than 1.7 million PMP holders. The salary figures come from PMI's own Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey, 14th edition, which PMI announced on November 13, 2025. PMI says it surveyed 14,628 project professionals in 21 countries between March 9 and April 19, 2025.
| PMI survey figure (14th edition, 2025) | What it compares |
|---|---|
| 17% higher median salary | PMP-certified vs non-certified respondents, across all 21 countries |
| $135,000 vs $109,157 | U.S. median for certified vs non-certified respondents, a gap PMI calls nearly 24% |
These are PMI's own findings about its own certification. Three cautions apply before you use them in a decision:
- The figures are self-reported. They come from what survey respondents reported, which is not the same as audited pay data.
- They do not show cause. People who earn the PMP already have at least two to five years of project leadership, depending on education. Some of the gap may come from that experience, not from the certificate.
- They are broad medians. The 17% spans 21 countries and the $135,000 covers the whole U.S. Your role, industry, and location matter more.
Your job-posting check is the better local evidence. Use PMI's figures as PMI's view, not as a forecast of your raise.
When the PMP is not worth it yet
- You do not meet the experience requirement. You need 36 months of leading projects with a bachelor's degree, 48 with an associate's or vocational qualification, 60 with a secondary diploma, or 24 with a degree from a GAC-accredited program, all within the last 10 years. The PMP eligibility guide shows how to count. PMI itself suggests the CAPM for people who do not yet qualify.
- Your target postings rarely mention it. If your check finds few PMP mentions and other credentials appear more often, follow the market you are actually entering.
- You cannot protect the study time this year. The eligibility year starts at approval. Applying when work leaves no room to study puts both fees and attempts at risk.
A free first look costs nothing and helps with the last point. The PMP exam overview with the format, weights, and attempt rules and the 20 free PMP practice questions show what a study year on the 2026 outline involves before you spend anything.
If the CAPM looks like the better first step, the PMP vs CAPM guide compares the two side by side and explains how an active CAPM covers the PMP's 35 training hours later.
Keeping the PMP once you have it
The PMP is not a one-time purchase. PMI requires 60 professional development units (PDUs) every three years, plus the renewal fee, through its Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. The cycle starts on the day you pass. PMI's maintenance page splits the 60 into at least 35 education PDUs and at most 25 for giving back to the profession, with at least 8 in each of its three skill areas: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. One PDU is one hour of qualifying activity. Count that commitment in your decision, in hours as well as money.
If you already hold the PMP, the July 2026 exam change does not affect you. PMI says existing holders keep their certification under the same 60-unit, three-year cycle.
If your posting check and cost list both point to yes, the next step is a realistic schedule. Confirm your tier in the PMP eligibility guide, then build a calendar around your workweek with the free PMP study plan.
