PMP vs CAPM: Which PMI Certification Fits You Now?

A side-by-side comparison of PMI's PMP and CAPM, how an active CAPM covers the PMP's 35 training hours, and a decision rule based on your months of project leadership.

Short answer

Take the PMP if you already meet its experience requirement, which is 36 months leading projects with a bachelor's degree, and between 24 and 60 months on the other education paths. Take the CAPM if you are short of that requirement by a year or more and want a PMI credential now, since the CAPM requires no experience. An active CAPM also covers the PMP's 35 training hours later, though not its experience requirement. If you are only a few months short, keep building experience and finish the PMP training instead.

PMP and CAPM side by side

Both certifications come from PMI, and the same Certification Handbook covers applying, scheduling, and exam rules for both. The difference is who each one is for. The PMP is for people who already lead projects. PMI's CAPM page says the CAPM requires no experience.

These details come from PMI's PMP and CAPM pages, the 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline, PMI's certification maintenance page, and the PMI Certification Handbook, as checked on October 27, 2026. The fees are the US-dollar prices each PMI page showed that day. PMI's handbook says prices vary by membership status and regional location, and member pricing applies only if you join before you pay. The PMP exam cost guide covers what else changes the PMP amount.

PMP experience tiers at a glance

The PMP's experience requirement depends on your highest qualification. All months must be non-overlapping, spent leading projects in a professional setting, and fall within the 10 years before you apply.

Your educationMonths of project leadership required
Secondary diploma (high school, GED, or equivalent)60
Associate's degree, higher certificate, or vocational program at post-secondary level48
Bachelor's degree or higher36
Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program24

The PMP eligibility guide explains how PMI counts overlapping projects and what "leading" means on the application.

How an active CAPM helps with the PMP later

PMI's 2026 outline gives CAPM holders one concrete benefit on the PMP application. If you hold an active CAPM and meet the PMP's education and experience requirements, you do not need to document the 35 training hours. PMI calls this a 35-hour credit toward the training requirement.

Two limits matter:

  • It waives training, not experience. The CAPM does not count as project leadership months. You still need your full tier.
  • It must be active. The outline says active CAPM holders get the waiver. PMI's September 2026 blog adds that an expired CAPM does not waive the hours, and a CAPM in its suspension period must be renewed first. Keeping the CAPM active means meeting its 15-unit, three-year renewal.

PMI's new-exam FAQ also mentions a 15-hour PMI CAPM to PMP Essentials course, aligned with the 2026 PMP outline, that earns 15 PDUs toward CAPM maintenance. It is optional, and the active CAPM alone already covers the PMP's training requirement.

Because there are other ways to meet the 35 hours, take the CAPM for what it offers you now, not only for the waiver. The PMP 35 contact hours guide covers the other routes, including the rule that, from December 1, 2026, live classes count only from PMI Authorized Training Partners, China Registered Education Providers, or eligible accredited academic programs.

A PMP vs CAPM decision rule by months of leadership

Count your non-overlapping months of project leadership in the last 10 years, then compare them with your tier:

  1. You meet your tier. Go for the PMP. The CAPM adds little, because you can complete the 35 training hours directly.
  2. You are a few months short. Keep leading projects and finish your PMP training now. PMI's outline tells applicants to record training hours regardless of when they were accrued. Apply once you cross the line.
  3. You are a year or more short. The CAPM lets you show project management knowledge now, and an active CAPM later covers the PMP training requirement.
  4. You have no leadership experience yet. The CAPM is the PMI certification built for you. PMI's PMP outline itself suggests the CAPM to people who do not meet the PMP requirements.

"A year or more" is a rule of thumb, not a PMI threshold. If you expect to cross your tier soon but cannot study for the PMP right away, the CAPM can still be worth it.

Rules 1 and 2 lead to the same exam: 180 questions across three domains, set in predictive, agile, and hybrid projects. Full PMP prep on Passy is still being built, and its page shows how the planned PMP practice is organized by those three domains.

Two PMP vs CAPM decisions worked through

Both candidates are fictional.

Kenji has a bachelor's degree and 20 months of leading internal projects. The bachelor's tier needs 36 months, so Kenji is 16 months short. That is well over a year, so the rule points to the CAPM now. Kenji keeps it active, and when the 36 months are reached, the active CAPM covers the PMP training requirement.

Aisha has an associate's degree and 44 months of leading projects. Her tier needs 48, so she is 4 months short. The rule points to waiting. She finishes a 35-hour course now, keeps logging experience, and applies for the PMP once she reaches 48 months.
