Praxis Bridge for Core: When a Near-Miss Score Can Replace a Retake
Check whether a near-miss Praxis Core score qualifies for Praxis Bridge, how the module and its Alt. Passed result work, and when a full retake is the better route.
Short answer
Praxis Bridge lets an eligible near-miss candidate complete an ETS learning module instead of retaking a test, and ETS names Core Reading 5713, Writing 5723, and Mathematics 5733 among its Bridge titles. You qualify only if you attempted the test, scored within 1 SEM of the state passing score, and want to teach in a state that has adopted Bridge for that title. Core is often a program-admission test, so get written confirmation that your program accepts the result before you pay the $50 fee listed in ETS's 2025 FAQ.
What is Praxis Bridge for Core?
Praxis Bridge lets an eligible near-miss candidate complete an ETS learning module instead of retaking a test, and ETS names Core Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733) among its Bridge titles. Your state must have adopted Bridge for that title, so a close score does not qualify you by itself.
That title list is dated September 1, 2025. The rules below come from ETS's Bridge page, its flyer, and its 2025 FAQ for educator preparation programs, all checked November 6, 2026. That FAQ is framed around state licensure, which matters if you need Core for admission. The Bridge page states no price, so the $50 fee comes from that FAQ. Confirm it before you buy.
Bridge does not give you a new test score. If you complete it, you receive an updated score report marked Alt. Passed, so whether your program accepts that result matters as much as whether you are eligible.
Are you eligible?
ETS's FAQ sets three conditions, and you must meet all of them:
- You attempted a test offered for Bridge. ETS's flyer says you must have taken it at least once.
- Your score is within 1 SEM of the state passing score. SEM is ETS's abbreviation for a margin it publishes each year. The passing score is the one your state licensure agency defines.
- You want to teach in a state that has adopted Bridge for that title. The state that counts is the one where you plan to teach.
To find the qualifying score, follow ETS's four steps:
- Find the state passing score for your test. The Praxis Core passing-score guide shows how to confirm it.
- Find the annual SEM in the current Understanding Your Praxis Scores document.
- Subtract the SEM from the passing score.
- Round up.
Here is the arithmetic with invented numbers. Suppose a state's passing score were 160 and the SEM were 4.5: 160 − 4.5 = 155.5, which rounds up to 156. Both figures are invented for this arithmetic, so take the real ones from your state and the current ETS document.
Your calculation is only a planning step. ETS says it emails eligible candidates when the official score report is available, so treat that email as the signal to act. If your arithmetic says you qualify and no email arrives, ask ETS before you register for a retake.
If you took Core Combined (5752): ETS's title list and West Virginia's page name 5713, 5723, and 5733, not 5752. Modules are per subtest and Combined scores are reported by test, but no source checked for this guide says whether a Combined attempt qualifies. Look for the ETS email or ask ETS.
Has your state adopted Bridge for Core?
Check the ETS overview page for the state where you want to teach. ETS says that page shows whether the state has adopted Bridge and for which titles, and you can reach it from ETS's state requirements directory. Adoption alone does not mean Core is covered, as these two pages show:
| State overview, checked November 6, 2026 | Bridge titles listed | What that means for Core |
|---|---|---|
| West Virginia | Includes Core Reading 5713, Writing 5723, and Mathematics 5733, effective April 7, 2025 | Candidates seeking West Virginia certification may qualify on these three tests |
| Virginia | Other titles, no Core test | No Core route is listed, even though Virginia accepts Core for entry to approved preparation programs |
These are two examples on one date, not a state list. West Virginia's page also describes a retroactive window from April 7, 2022 through April 6, 2025, for candidates who meet the requirements and were emailed. It states no qualifying score, so you still need the steps above.
An undated ETS article says Bridge has been adopted by 19 states and territories and is available across 27 Praxis titles. It names no states and no Core test, so it cannot settle your case.
Find your exact test code on your state's page and save a dated copy. If the code is not there, plan for a retake unless your state agency tells you otherwise. The agency controls the requirement, and the ETS bulletin warns that its state information can lag behind changes.
How does the module work?
Each Core subtest has one module, and it covers all of that subtest's content categories. ETS's Bridge materials, checked November 6, 2026, describe it this way:
| Feature | ETS's description |
|---|---|
| Fee | $50, per the 2025 FAQ |
| Length | About 45 minutes |
| Format | Untimed, unproctored, and self-paced, with breaks allowed |
| Content | Content overviews and annotated practice items |
| Knowledge check | 75%–80%, with hints and unlimited chances on missed items |
| Access | An email link, also available in your Praxis account |
| Deadline | Six months from purchase |
The six months run from purchase, and if you do not finish in time you need a full retake registration, so buy when you can complete it. A module also covers only one subtest, so if you narrowly missed two, check each score separately and confirm the total at checkout.
The module is review with a knowledge check, not a rehearsal for a timed test. For practice around it, start with the 20 free Praxis Core practice questions. For wider review, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch includes 1,200 questions.
What does Alt. Passed change?
There is no score report for Bridge itself. On completion, ETS says you receive a Certificate of Completion and an updated Praxis Score Report marked Alt. Passed within 5 business days. ETS's flyer says the licensing agency can view that as equivalent to passing the test, and its FAQ says completers are designated as passed in Title II reporting.
That wording leaves three gaps:
- "Can view" is not "must accept." The language is permissive. It does not promise that every agency or program will treat Alt. Passed as a pass.
- Licensing is not admission. ETS frames Bridge around state licensure, while Core is often a program-admission test. Tennessee, for example, says Core may be required for preparation admission but is not required for licensure. The ETS documents checked do not say a program must accept Alt. Passed for admission.
- A designation is not a number. Alt. Passed is not a new scaled score. A composite route adds numeric scores, as South Carolina's does with a 464 total and a floor on each test (checked November 3, 2026), and nothing checked says how a composite treats Alt. Passed. That example shows how a composite works, not whether South Carolina offers Bridge for Core.
Ask your program these questions in writing before you pay, and keep the reply:
- Will you accept a Praxis Score Report marked Alt. Passed for this test code to meet your requirement?
- Will it count by your deadline, given that the updated report can take up to 5 business days after I finish?
- If I am using a composite or other combined route, how do you count it?
- How should the updated report reach you?
If you also need the result for licensure, put the first question to your state agency. The Praxis Core score-results guide covers finding your report and sending it to recipients.
If the answer is no or unclear, treat a retake as your route. Full Praxis Core prep planned for launch is organized by eight content categories, which gives that review a structure.
Should you use Bridge or retake?
Compare the two routes against your requirement:
| Praxis Bridge | Full retake | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Candidates who meet all three conditions | Candidates whose new test date meets the 28-day rule |
| Fee | $50 (2025 FAQ, checked November 6, 2026) | $90 per Core test (checked November 3, 2026) |
| Effort | About 45 minutes, untimed | A timed test of 85 to 100 minutes, plus preparation |
| Timing | Finish within six months of purchase; updated report within 5 business days | Test date at least 28 days after the last attempt; score timing varies by test and delivery method |
| What you receive | A certificate and a report marked Alt. Passed, with no new scaled score | A new reported score |
| Main risk | Your program or agency may not accept it | More cost and study time, with no certainty of reaching the score |
Recheck both fees at checkout. The retake figure comes from the bulletin covering August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, and its fees and terms can change.
Bridge fits when ETS has emailed you, your state's page lists your test code, and your program or agency has confirmed in writing that Alt. Passed meets the requirement.
A retake fits when your score is outside the range, your state does not list your test, your program says no or will not confirm in time, or you need a numeric score for a composite route.
The 28-day retake rule gives you time for these checks, because a repeat test cannot happen right away. Finish them before you pay for either route. If you re-registered before you learned about Bridge, ETS's FAQ says you can ask customer service about a refund.
If you do retake, compare the raw points earned and available in each content category on your score report. Then use the three-test study guide or, for Math, the Praxis Core Math guide to choose your review tasks, and put them into the free Praxis Core study plan. For short recall work, 450 flashcards are planned for launch as part of full Praxis Core prep.
Your next step today: open your official report, write down the test code and score, and look for that code on your state's overview page.
