Praxis Core Practice Tests: What ETS Includes, What Costs Extra, and How to Use Them

Which Praxis Core practice tests are official, what comes free with registration, what the $24.95 forms add, and the order that gets the most out of each one.

Short answer

ETS sells interactive practice tests for Praxis Core Reading, Writing, and Mathematics at $24.95 each, and its product pages say that registering for a test gives you a free interactive practice test for that subject (checked November 6, 2026). With some exceptions the free test is Form 1, and repeating it gives you the same questions in the same order, so a fresh run needs a different form. Start with the free Study Companion samples, take the free form after you have worked on your weak skills, and keep Form 2 for a later rehearsal. Use each result to decide what to study next, because it is not an official scaled score or a pass.

Which Praxis Core practice tests are official?

ETS sells interactive practice tests for Praxis Core Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733) at $24.95 each, and its product pages say that registering for a test gives you a free interactive practice test for that subject. ETS also points candidates to free Study Companions and to free Core prep on Study.com. The prices below are what ETS displayed on November 6, 2026. Some may be promotional, so recheck them before you buy. The Best use column is Passy's editorial view.

ETS's Practice Tests page also lists Core Combined (5752), but that entry showed no price or product page when checked on November 6, 2026, and a list entry alone does not show that a separate Combined practice test exists. If you register for Combined, check your confirmation for which practice tests come with it, or ask ETS.

What do you get free when you register?

You get an interactive practice test for the subject you register for, at no charge beyond the test fee. That fee is $90 for one Core test or $150 for all three tests on one date as Core Combined, according to the 2026–27 ETS bulletin checked November 3, 2026, and the Praxis Core cost guide covers the rest of the budget. With some exceptions, when a test has more than one practice test, the free one is Form 1.

ETS's Math listing calls the product a full-length test designed to mirror the structure, timing, and content areas of the real one. It lists these features, and the Reading and Writing listings use similar wording:

  • Real test questions developed by the exam's creators
  • An optional timer
  • Instant feedback on every answer and immediate scoring
  • A detailed explanation for each question
  • A breakdown of your strengths and weaknesses

You need a live internet connection to use it.

Know the gaps before you plan around it. The pages checked do not state the number of questions, an access period, or a number of uses. The Writing page also does not say whether the essays are included or how they would be scored. Treat those points as open until you see the test or hear from ETS.

Timing matters too. The free test comes with registration, so a late registration leaves you less time to use it. The Praxis Core registration guide works back from your score deadline.

What does a $24.95 practice test add?

The main thing a paid form adds is a run that is not a repeat. ETS says that repeating or repurchasing the same practice test does not change the questions: you answer the same ones in the same order. A second attempt at Form 1 therefore tests your memory of it more than your skill. Form 2 is a separate listing for Reading, Writing, and Math, although ETS does not describe how it differs from Form 1 or say whether any questions overlap.

Read the listing name before you pay. ETS also shows an unnumbered $24.95 practice test for each subject, and those listings carry no form number. Because the free test is usually Form 1 and a repurchase repeats the same questions, choose the listing that says Form 2 if you have already used your free test. If you cannot tell which form you would receive, ask ETS first.

One Form 2 adds $24.95 to your budget, and Form 2 for all three tests adds 3 × $24.95 = $74.85. Our editorial suggestion: buy Form 2 only after you have reviewed your free form and still have time to act on a second result. If one test is clearly your weakest, start there instead of buying all three.

Which free resources should you use first?

Start with the Study Companion for each test you need. ETS says the companions explain the test's structure, content, question types, and scoring, and that they include sample questions with detailed answers and explanations. The Praxis Core study guide then puts all three tests on one page.

Study.com comes next. ETS's Free Resources for Core Tests link leads to the page offering the study plan, lessons, and practice questions in the table above (checked November 6, 2026). An ETS article on the partnership also mentions targeted skills practice and diagnostic tools. Read the page with three limits in mind:

  • It does not use the words "practice test," so don't expect the ETS form here.
  • It states no eligibility rule, time limit, or expiry.
  • It also promotes a separate paid subscription and does not say whether any free feature needs one.

Its start link goes to a Study.com page for Combined 5752, so check that what you practice matches the test you are taking.

Older advice may send you to Khan Academy. ETS's current Free Resources for Core Tests link points to Study.com, so check that advice before you rely on it.

When you want more questions than the free routes give you, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch includes 1,200 questions and 450 flashcards across eight content categories. It is not planned to include a full-length timed test, so the ETS forms remain your rehearsal.

When should you take a full-length practice test?

Take it after you have worked on your weak skills, not on your first day of study. ETS advises using practice results to target weak areas, and a form gives you only one fresh look at its questions, so save it for when the result can change your plan. This order is Passy's editorial advice, not an ETS rule:

  1. Confirm your tests. Check which tests your program or state requires before you study or buy anything.
  2. Sample the questions. Work through the Study Companion samples or 20 free Praxis Core practice questions.
  3. Study from your misses. Name the skill behind each one, then use the Praxis Core Math guide with its short Math question set, the Praxis Core Writing guide, or the Reading strategies.
  4. Take the free form on the clock. Turn on the optional timer and finish the whole test in one sitting. The official times, checked November 3, 2026, are 85 minutes for Reading, 100 for Writing, and 90 for Math.
  5. Review every explanation. Include the questions you got right by guessing.
  6. Keep a second form for later. Repair what the first form exposed, then use Form 2 as a rehearsal, with enough days left to act on the result.

Writing needs one extra check. Its 100 minutes are three separately timed sections: 40 minutes of selected-response questions and two 30-minute essays. If the form you open has no essay section, write the argumentative essay and the source-based essay separately, each on its own 30-minute clock.

The eight-week Praxis Core study schedule rehearses complete sections in week 7. With two forms, one workable option is the free form in week 5 or 6 and Form 2 in week 7. Put your real test date into the free Praxis Core study plan and count back from there.

Between forms, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch is organized by eight content categories, which suits focused work on the category your first form showed as weak.

What can a practice result tell you?

A practice result can show you which skills to work on next. It cannot give you an official scaled score or a pass. ETS's score guide, checked November 3, 2026, reports each Core score from 100 to 200 in two-point intervals and converts raw points to scaled scores with an adjustment for the difficulty of the form, so a percent correct does not translate directly. Passing scores are set by states and agencies, not by ETS, and the Praxis Core passing score guide shows how to find yours.

Read your result this way (Passy's editorial guidance):

What you seeWhat it suggestsWhat to do next
Misses cluster in one content categoryA skill gapReview that category, then try fresh questions on it
You knew the material but ran out of timeA pacing problemDo timed sets before your next full run
One test is much weaker than the othersWhere your remaining time belongsSpend your study time there, and any Form 2 purchase
A high percent correctStrength on that form onlyKeep practicing, and do not count it as a pass

Your official score report later supports the same habit. It shows the raw points you earned and the raw points available in each content category, and comparing the two can guide further study.

Your next step is to confirm your required tests and open the Study Companion for the first one. Then try the 20 free Praxis Core practice questions and write down the skill behind each miss.

If those misses are spread across several categories, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch includes 1,200 questions for broader practice.
