SHRM-SCP Pass Rate and Passing Score: What SHRM's Numbers Do and Don't Tell You

SHRM's global SHRM-SCP pass rate has run between 50% and 56% in the five windows it lists, 15 to 18 points below the SHRM-CP. Here is what that gap means, why every pass is a 200, and how to judge your own readiness instead.

Short answer

SHRM's published global SHRM-SCP pass rate was 50% for the May–July 2025 window, the latest SHRM listed as of October 27, 2026. Across the five windows on SHRM's page it ranged from 50% to 56%, 15 to 18 points below the SHRM-CP each time. The passing score works the same way for both levels: results are scaled from 120 to 200, every pass is reported as 200, and SHRM publishes no passing percentage. A pass rate describes past candidates worldwide, not your own chances.

You will often read that about half of SHRM-SCP candidates pass, and SHRM's own numbers support that. The figure is also easy to misread: it isn't a quota, it isn't your personal probability, and it says nothing about how many questions you need to get right. Here is what SHRM actually publishes, read carefully.

SHRM-SCP pass rates by testing window

SHRM publishes global pass rates after each testing window on its exam details page. As checked on October 27, 2026:

Testing windowSHRM-SCPSHRM-CPGap
May–July 202550%68%18 points
Dec. 2024–Feb. 202551%67%16 points
May–July 202456%71%15 points
Dec. 2023–Feb. 202453%70%17 points
May–July 202354%71%17 points

The gap column is Passy's arithmetic. A few limits on these numbers:

  • They cover all examinees worldwide in each window, as SHRM describes them. SHRM doesn't split them by country, first attempt or retake, experience or preparation method.
  • There is no official first-time pass rate. If you see one quoted for the SHRM-SCP, it didn't come from SHRM's page.
  • The latest window listed is May–July 2025. SHRM hadn't added the December 2025 to February 2026 window as of October 27, 2026. Undated figures of 52% or 55% on other sites don't match any single window in SHRM's table; check them against SHRM's page.

What the lower SHRM-SCP pass rate does and doesn't mean

SHRM doesn't explain the gap directly, but three of its own statements bear on it:

  • A different standard. SHRM's exam details page says the CP standard is the expected level for HR professionals who perform operational work, and the SCP standard for those who perform strategic work. The handbook frames the SCP as the level reasonably expected of senior-level HR professionals.
  • Background matters. SHRM's Choosing the Right HR Certification page says that historically, many HR professionals with non-strategic backgrounds who attempted the SHRM-SCP were unsuccessful, and recommends the SHRM-CP for that background.
  • More preparation. In an April 2024 article, SHRM's certification staff wrote that SHRM Certification research found SCP examinees required 80 to 120 hours of preparation, against 40 to 80 for the CP.

What the rate is not:

  • Not a curve. The 2026 handbook says your performance isn't compared with other candidates', and if everyone who tests meets the standard, everyone passes. A 50% window means half of that window's candidates met the SCP standard, not that half were allowed to.
  • Not a measure of your odds. The candidates in a window can differ widely in experience and preparation. SHRM doesn't publish which groups pass, so no honest calculation turns 50% into a personal probability.

SHRM-SCP passing score: the same 120–200 scale as the CP

SHRM reports the passing score and every result as a scaled score from 120 to 200, and every candidate who passes receives the maximum, 200. The SCP works exactly like the CP here:

  • 200 means you met the SCP standard, not that you answered everything correctly.
  • There is no passing percentage and no published number of correct answers. SHRM sets the standard with the Modified Angoff method and calibrates results before the exams are given (the handbook calls it pre-equating).
  • Pass or fail is decided on overall performance, according to the sample score report, which in the 2026 handbook is a SHRM-SCP report. Its graph shows each of the six areas against a dashed line marking the performance expected of a SHRM-SCP.
  • Results arrive in two steps: a preliminary pass or did-not-pass decision at the test center, then the official result and feedback report in your SHRM Certification Portal about two to three weeks later.

The SHRM-CP passing score guide explains the results timeline and how to read each zone of the feedback report; all of it applies to the SCP. Because no practice percentage converts to SHRM's scale, practice is for finding weak areas and building stamina. A full-length timed SHRM-SCP rehearsal, planned for launch and scored at the end, serves that purpose without pretending to be a SHRM score.

How hard is the SHRM-SCP for you? A self-check

SHRM's numbers can't answer this, but your own work history and practice can. These questions are Passy's editorial checklist, built on SHRM's description of the SCP standard:

  1. Does your daily work match the advanced indicators? Read the "For Advanced HR Professionals" lists in the 2026 SHRM BASK for a few areas. If you set direction, design programs and advise executives, the SCP lens is familiar. If you mostly implement, it isn't yet.
  2. How wide is your experience? The exam covers 14 functional areas. A senior specialist may know total rewards deeply and labor relations or global mobility barely.
  3. Can you explain why the strategic option wins? In practice scenarios, say in one sentence why the best answer beats the runner-up. Guessing right without a reason doesn't count as readiness.
  4. Have you covered the operational basics you delegate? The BASK says the all-professional indicators also apply to senior candidates.
  5. Can you hold focus for 3 hours 40 minutes? Two 110-minute sections with no scheduled break is its own test.

The SHRM-SCP eligibility guide helps with the first question. For the rest, the free SHRM-SCP practice questions give a first look across the six areas, and planned SHRM-SCP prep that tracks your accuracy in each of the six areas names the area to work on next.

Planning around a roughly even SHRM-SCP pass rate

A pass rate near 50% is a reason to plan, not to panic. Practical steps:

  • Give yourself the full study range. SHRM's staff cite 80 to 120 hours; the SHRM-SCP study plan turns it into weeks.
  • Pick a window you can be ready for. Testing early in a window doesn't buy a second try in that window; SHRM allows a retest only in a later one.
  • Budget for the possibility of a second attempt. A retake is a new application at the full fee, as the guide to failing the SHRM-SCP explains.

If the December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027, window feels tight, compare the planned 30-, 90- and 180-day SHRM-SCP access periods against your window before deciding between it and May 2027, whose dates SHRM hadn't published as of October 27, 2026.
