AANPCB FNP Exam in 2027: Blueprint, Format and Rules Confirmed So Far
As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB has announced no change to the FNP exam for 2027. The 2024 FNP blueprint, 150 questions in 3 hours and three attempts per calendar year are the rules in force. What is confirmed, what is not, and how to prepare.
Short answer
As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB has announced no change to the FNP exam for 2027. The 2024 FNP Examination Blueprint is the only FNP blueprint on NPCB's FNP page and in the FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026): 135 scored items across Assess (43), Diagnose (36), Plan (36) and Evaluate (20), inside a 150-question, 3-hour exam, with up to three attempts per calendar year. NPCB's October 2026 AGNP handbook shows how it publishes a change, with a new AGNP blueprint labeled effective January 1, 2027. The FNP handbook has no such appendix.
What applies to the AANPCB FNP exam in 2027, as of October 25, 2026
If you take the AANPCB FNP exam in 2027, the exam NPCB describes today is the one built on the 2024 FNP Examination Blueprint. As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB's FNP certification page, its FNP exam page, the FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026) and its news page announce no new FNP blueprint, format, vendor or retake change for 2027.
These are the rules in force as of that date:
| Item | What applies now |
|---|---|
| Blueprint | 2024 FNP Examination Blueprint: 135 scored items, classified by practice domain and patient age |
| Format | 150 multiple-choice questions (135 scored, 15 unscored pretest) in 3 hours, on computer at Prometric test centers |
| Testing window | 120 days from eligibility to schedule and sit the exam |
| Attempts | Up to three per calendar year, January 1 to December 31, since January 2026 |
| Fees | $240 for AANP members, $315 for nonmembers, for the exam or a retake |
| Scoring | Pass or fail against a standard-setting cut. Not reported as a percentage correct |
| Credential | FNP-C, under NPCB's NP-C mark, valid for five years |
The AANPCB FNP prep page carries the same format and weights, with a note that a 2027 candidate takes the 2024 blueprint exam unless NPCB announces a change.
Announcement, effective date and retirement: where each FNP rule stands
A change has three dates: when it is announced, when it takes effect and when the old version stops. For the FNP exam, here is what NPCB's own documents show:
| Rule | Announced | In effect | Old version retired |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 FNP blueprint | Its structure matches NPCB's 2023 FNP practice analysis summary. NPCB's pages label it "2024" but print no announcement or effective date | In force, the only FNP blueprint NPCB publishes | The pre-2024 blueprint is no longer published. NPCB prints no retirement date for it |
| Three FNP attempts per calendar year | Initiated by NPCB's board in 2025, per the 2025 Annual Report | January 2026, per the FAQ | The earlier, lower FNP limit no longer applies. Other NPCB exams still allow two |
| Prometric reschedule fees | Listed in the FAQ | July 1, 2025 | Not stated |
| A 2027 FNP blueprint | None announced | None | The 2024 blueprint has no announced end date |
For comparison, look at a different NPCB exam. The AGNP Candidate Handbook updated in October 2026 prints two blueprints: the current one "effective through December 31, 2026" and a new one effective January 1, 2027. That is what an announced change looks like at NPCB: a dated appendix in the handbook. It applies to the AGNP exam only. The FNP handbook, still dated 06/2026 on NPCB's Handbooks page, has a single blueprint appendix with no dates.
What is still unknown for 2027 FNP candidates
- A future FNP blueprint. The handbook says practice analyses are conducted periodically, and NPCB has published FNP practice analysis summaries dated 2015, 2020 and 2023. It has announced no next one, so any "new FNP blueprint in 2027" claim is a guess
- 2027 fees. NPCB reserves the right to revise fees at any time. No fee change is announced, so $240 and $315 are today's figures, not a promise for 2027
- The 15 CE hours line for retests. One version of NPCB's FAQ answer requires 15 continuing education hours before a retest, while another and the handbook do not mention it. The AANPCB FNP retake guide explains how to check
- The passing standard. NPCB does not publish a cut score or scale today
- Branding. The 2025 Annual Report mentions new branding in 2026. The FNP-C credential and the NP-C mark appear unchanged on NPCB's pages
How to watch for an FNP change before a 2027 test date
Check three NPCB pages when you apply and again when your Authorization to Test arrives:
- The FNP certification page. Today it is headed "2024 FNP Examination Blueprint."
- The Handbooks page. Today's FNP handbook file is dated 06-04-2026. A newer file, or an appendix with an effective date like the AGNP one, is the signal to read closely.
- The news page. As of October 25, 2026, its recent posts include a certificate milestone, board elections, an ENP discount and a November 4, 2026 webinar on applying, with no FNP exam change.
The handbook says its information can change without notice and that eligibility rules in effect when you apply are the ones that count. Passy's AANPCB FNP exam page also names the blueprint its practice follows and the date it was last checked against NPCB.
Testing in 2027: the application timeline that applies
The application rules in the 06/2026 handbook give 2027 graduates concrete dates. A fictional example:
| Step | MSN student finishing all coursework and clinical hours on Friday, May 14, 2027 |
|---|---|
| Earliest application | About November 14, 2026, up to 6 months before program completion |
| Authorization to Test | After May 14, 2027 is reached and eligibility is confirmed |
| End of the 120-day window | Around September 11, 2027 in Passy arithmetic. Use the dates in your own ATT email |
| Retakes, if needed | Up to three attempts in calendar 2027 under today's rule |
A DNP student can apply up to 12 months before completion, so anyone finishing a DNP by late October 2027 can already apply. The AANPCB FNP application guide walks through each step, and the free AANPCB FNP study planner works backward from the test date you choose.
Preparing for 2027 against the 2024 FNP blueprint
Each of the 135 scored items is classified twice: once by practice domain and once by patient age. NPCB's FNP page lists these tasks:
| Domain | Scored items | NPCB's tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Assess | 43 (32%) | Obtain subjective information, perform the appropriate physical exam, and order, perform and interpret screening and diagnostic tests |
| Diagnose | 36 (26.5%) | Synthesize subjective and objective findings into differential diagnoses, then prioritize them and establish the primary diagnosis |
| Plan | 36 (26.5%) | Build a patient-centered, evidence-based plan, initiate referrals or consultations, prescribe or order treatments, and provide education, counseling and health promotion |
| Evaluate | 20 (15%) | Evaluate how well the plan of care works, then monitor and modify it based on outcomes |
The age classification puts newborn at 3 items, infant 4, toddler 5, child 6, adolescent 12, young adult 30, middle adult 35 and older adult 40. NPCB notes that the adolescent, young adult and middle adult groups include prenatal care. Grouped in Passy arithmetic, that is 18 items (13%) from newborn through child, 12 (9%) for adolescents, 65 (48%) for young and middle adults and 40 (30%) for older adults. Older adults are the largest single group, but newborns through adolescents still account for 30 items, about 22% of the scored exam.
Two details in NPCB's own documents differ. The FNP page prints 26.5% for Diagnose and Plan, while the handbook prints 27%, which makes its column add to 101%. The item counts, 36 each, are the same in both. The handbook also repeats the Plan tasks under Evaluate, while the FNP page lists separate Evaluate tasks. Study from the FNP page's wording.
Around the domains, NPCB lists four knowledge areas: health assessment, pathophysiology, therapeutics (pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and integrative) and evidence-informed practice, which spans topics from diagnostic reasoning and health promotion to legal and ethical issues, transitions of care and pain management. NPCB also publishes an FNP and AGNP reference list on its exam overview page.
To practice against this structure now, the 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions are split across the four domains roughly in proportion to their item counts and span the age groups. For the larger set, see how full AANPCB FNP prep maps 1,150 questions to the four domains. It is planned for launch with no date set yet, and checkout is not open. If you are still choosing between NPCB and ANCC for 2027, the AANPCB vs ANCC comparison sets NPCB's 2024 blueprint next to ANCC's new outline.
