AANPCB Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) guideThe AANPCB FNP in 2027
AANPCB FNP-C vs ANCC FNP-BC in 2027: Two Different Exams Compared
ANCC's new FNP test content outline takes effect October 30, 2026, so every ANCC FNP-BC candidate in 2027 takes it. NPCB's FNP-C exam stays on its 2024 blueprint unless NPCB announces a change. Format, content, fees, eligibility and retest rules, side by side.
Short answer
They are two separate certification exams for the same FNP role. For 2027, NPCB's FNP-C exam is 150 questions (135 scored) in 3 hours under its 2024 FNP blueprint, unless NPCB announces a change. ANCC's FNP-BC exam is 175 questions (150 scored) in 3.5 hours under a test content outline effective October 30, 2026, so every ANCC candidate testing in 2027 takes the new outline. As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB charges $240 for AANP members or $315 otherwise, ANCC charges $395 for nonmembers, and the two boards' retake rules differ.
AANPCB FNP-C or ANCC FNP-BC in 2027: the short answer
Both exams certify family nurse practitioners, but they are run by different boards, under different outlines and rules. In 2027, NPCB's FNP-C exam is the shorter one, 150 questions in 3 hours on its 2024 FNP blueprint, as long as NPCB announces no change. ANCC's FNP-BC exam has 175 questions in 3.5 hours and a new test content outline that takes effect October 30, 2026. Neither board's rules apply to the other's exam, so read every policy below as belonging to one board only. All details were checked on each board's own pages on October 25, 2026.

ANCC's prices include a $140 nonrefundable administrative fee. The pace is the same on both exams: 180 minutes for 150 questions and 210 minutes for 175 both work out to 72 seconds a question, in Passy arithmetic. The difference is stamina, since ANCC's sitting runs 30 minutes longer. If NPCB's exam is your pick, see what AANPCB FNP prep built on the 2024 blueprint will include.
What ANCC's October 30, 2026 outline means for 2027
ANCC's FNP page lists the new outline and reference list as effective October 30, 2026, with a 12-business-day test suspension before the switch. Exams on or before October 18, 2026 used the old outline, and exams from October 30 use the new one, so as of October 25, 2026 ANCC FNP testing is in that pause. Because the old outline covered only exams through October 18, every ANCC FNP candidate who tests in 2027 takes the new one, unless ANCC announces another change.
In ANCC's new outline, Implementation is the largest domain, 50 of 150 scored questions (33%), and body systems, drug agents and age groups are listed as secondary classifications. A review book or question bank written for ANCC's previous outline may not match it.
None of this changes NPCB's exam. As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB's FNP page still shows only the 2024 FNP blueprint, and the AANPCB FNP 2027 guide details what is confirmed for NPCB testers next year.
Where the AANPCB and ANCC FNP outlines differ
Domains. NPCB uses four practice domains. Prescribing, ordering treatments, referrals and patient education sit inside Plan, and follow-up sits in Evaluate. ANCC splits its content into five domains with a separate Implementation domain.
Age groups. NPCB fixes item counts by age: older adults carry 40 of 135 scored items, young and middle adults 65 together, and newborn through adolescent 30. ANCC lists its age groups without counts. NPCB's four domains are also the ones Passy's AANPCB FNP prep is organized by.
Other classifications. NPCB adds four knowledge areas: health assessment, pathophysiology, therapeutics and evidence-informed practice. ANCC says its exam is developed with body systems and drug agents in mind as secondary classifications, alongside age groups.
Neither layout says one exam is easier. Both boards report almost the same first-time pass rate for 2025, and those rates describe different groups of candidates, not your chances. The AANPCB FNP passing score guide explains what NPCB publishes about its pass mark.
Rules you cannot carry from one FNP exam to the other
- Retest timing. ANCC's 60-day wait does not apply at NPCB, which publishes no waiting period beyond the official score notification
- Attempt counting. NPCB counts by calendar year, January 1 to December 31. ANCC counts any 12-month period
- Documents. ANCC requires a Validation of Education form and transcripts before it issues an Authorization to Test. NPCB's FAQ says it does not use a VOE form
- Program accreditation. ANCC accepts FNP programs accredited by CCNE, ACEN or CNEA. NPCB requires accreditation by a nursing accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or CHEA
- License. ANCC accepts a current, active U.S. RN license or a legally recognized equivalent in another country. NPCB requires a current, active license in the U.S. or a U.S. territory
- Discounts. An AANP membership takes $75 off NPCB's fee. At ANCC, AANP members pay $340 instead of $395
Both boards require at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours, and both programs are accredited by ABSNC and NCCA, according to each board's own pages. The AANPCB FNP application guide covers NPCB's steps in full.
Choosing between NPCB and ANCC for a 2027 FNP exam
Use questions you can answer from the boards' own rules:
- Which format suits you? 150 questions in 3 hours, or 175 in 3.5 hours.
- Which outline matches your preparation? NPCB's four domains with fixed age counts, or ANCC's five domains with a large Implementation share.
- Can you get the documents? ANCC needs a Validation of Education form. NPCB needs only an unofficial transcript and your license to apply.
- What will it cost you? For a nonmember, NPCB's $315 is $80 less than ANCC's $395, as checked on October 25, 2026. The AANPCB FNP exam cost guide lists NPCB's other fees.
- How would a retake fit your timeline? NPCB states no waiting period. ANCC requires 60 days.
Ask your NP program and your state board of nursing whether either credential matters for your plans. NPCB says its certification is recognized by all U.S. state boards of nursing, and APRN licensure steps differ by state.
Passy covers the NPCB exam only
Passy's free tools and planned full prep follow NPCB's 2024 FNP blueprint, not ANCC's outline. The 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions and the AANPCB FNP study planner work today. Full prep is still being built, with no launch date and checkout not open, but you can already compare the planned access periods and the 1,150-question layout for NPCB's FNP exam.
