How to Apply for the AANPCB FNP Exam: Eligibility, Timeline and ATT
NPCB's FNP application is online: meet the education and RN license rules, apply up to 6 months (MSN, post-graduate certificate) or 12 months (DNP) before program completion, then schedule with Prometric inside a 120-day window.
Short answer
Create an NPCB online profile in your legal name, then submit the FNP application online with an unofficial transcript, a copy of your RN license and the fee ($240 for AANP members, $315 otherwise, as checked on October 25, 2026). MSN and post-graduate certificate students may apply up to 6 months before program completion, and DNP students up to 12 months before. You can test once all coursework and clinical hours are done and NPCB has sent your Authorization to Test, which opens a 120-day window to schedule and sit the exam at Prometric.
Applying for the AANPCB FNP exam: the short version
You apply online through the Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (NPCB): create a profile in your legal name, upload an unofficial transcript and your RN license, pay, and wait for approval. You can apply months before you finish your NP program, but you can only test once every course and clinical hour is complete. NPCB then sends an Authorization to Test (ATT), and you have 120 days to book and sit the exam at a Prometric test center. Each step below comes from NPCB's FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026) and its FAQ, as checked on October 25, 2026.
"AANP exam" or NPCB exam: who you actually apply to
Many students call it the AANP exam. The certifying body is the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), which now operates under the brand NPCB, according to its About page. It is a separate organization from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the membership association. AANP membership is optional. Its only role in your application is a $75 discount on the fee.
Passing the FNP exam earns the FNP-C credential under NPCB's NP-C mark. The ANCC's FNP-BC is a different exam with different rules, so ignore ANCC application steps you see in forums. The AANPCB vs ANCC comparison for 2027 lays out the differences, and Passy's AANPCB FNP prep covers NPCB's exam only, not ANCC's.
FNP-C eligibility: education, core courses and clinical hours
The handbook lists three requirements.
| Requirement | What NPCB asks for |
|---|---|
| Program | A graduate, postgraduate or doctoral FNP program accredited by a nursing accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation |
| Coursework and clinicals | Three separate graduate-level APRN core courses (advanced physical assessment, advanced pharmacology, advanced pathophysiology), at least 500 faculty-supervised direct patient care clinical hours, and preparation in the family/individual across the lifespan population focus |
| License | A current, active professional nursing license in the United States or a U.S. territory, kept active through your certification period |
NPCB does not use a Validation of Education form or a clinical-hours verification form. When you submit, you attest that your information is accurate, and NPCB may ask for more during an audit. If your core courses were taken at another school and accepted by your NP program, NPCB may also need official transcripts from that school.
When you can apply, and when you can test
Applying early and testing early are two different things.
| Your program | Earliest application | Earliest test |
|---|---|---|
| MSN or post-graduate certificate | Up to 6 months before program completion | After all didactic coursework and clinical hours are complete and your ATT arrives |
| DNP | Up to 12 months before program completion | Same rule |
"Program completion" is the date your coursework and clinical requirements are finished. Your degree can be conferred later: NPCB lets you test on an unofficial transcript, then releases your certification only after it receives the final official transcript showing the degree and conferral date. The handbook warns that entering an estimated or early completion date to gain eligibility sooner is not permitted, and NPCB can delay or revoke an application over it.
Planning backward from that completion date helps. The free AANPCB FNP study planner turns your expected test date into weekly blocks, and while your application is in review you can see what full AANPCB FNP prep will include at launch, alongside the free tools that already work today.
Documents for the NPCB online application
To apply:
- A copy of your current, active nursing license showing its expiration date
- An unofficial transcript showing coursework to date, with your full name, the university and the NP program role and population visible
- Payment, since the application cannot be submitted without it
- Your AANP membership number, if you want the $75 member discount. You can also email it to NPCB within 30 days of applying
Before NPCB releases your certification:
- A final official transcript with the degree awarded and conferral date, sent directly by your school or an approved third-party service. Transcripts forwarded from a personal email account are not accepted
- Post-graduate certificate applicants: final official transcripts for both the certificate program and the MSN
Set up your profile with your legal first and last name exactly as printed on your government-issued ID. NPCB passes that name to Prometric, and a mismatch can keep you out of the test center and cost extra fees to fix.
From "Professional Review" to your Authorization to Test
Your online profile shows the application status. The FAQ defines them, including Hold for Info (something is missing; check the notes in your file), Professional Review (NPCB's NP team is reviewing it) and Approved (you will be authorized to test based on the completion date you entered). Processing goes in the order received, once every document and the payment are in.
The ATT comes after your program completion date is reached and eligibility is confirmed. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, it arrives the next business day. It comes by email from certification@aanpcert.org, so check spam and junk folders.
If you need testing accommodations, wait for that eligibility email, then submit the request to Prometric. Do not schedule until Prometric approves it. NPCB's FAQ says an approved accommodation is valid for one year.
Booking inside the 120-day AANPCB FNP testing window
Schedule through "Schedule Exam" in your NPCB account, which hands you to Prometric. Your eligibility lasts 120 days, and appointments depend on test-center availability, so book early in the window.
Changes have consequences, as checked on October 25, 2026:
- Rescheduling or canceling 30 or more days ahead is free. From 5 to 29 days ahead, Prometric charges $50. Inside 5 days, or after a no-show or arriving more than 30 minutes late, the full test delivery fee applies
- Missing the window or your appointment means requesting an eligibility reset: one per application, a $75 nonrefundable fee, only within a year of your original application, and approval is at NPCB's discretion
- Withdrawing gets a partial refund, minus a $120 processing fee, only if you never scheduled and your window has not expired
The AANPCB FNP exam cost guide puts every one of these fees in a single table.
Application mistakes that delay FNP candidates
- Creating the profile under a nickname or a former name that does not match your ID
- Entering a hoped-for completion date instead of the real one
- Booking a seat before an accommodation request is approved
- Letting the 120-day window lapse without a reset plan
- Following ANCC instructions, such as a Validation of Education form, that NPCB does not use
Once the ATT is in hand, the deadline is real. Use the 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions to see how NPCB's practice domains feel. If you are weighing the access periods for later, compare the planned AANPCB FNP prep options. Full prep is still being built and checkout is not open yet. If you plan to test next year, the AANPCB FNP 2027 guide covers what is confirmed so far.
