AANPCB FNP Exam Cost: $240 or $315, and the Fees That Come After

As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB charges $240 for AANP members and $315 for nonmembers to take the FNP exam, and the same for a retake. Here are the reschedule, reset, withdrawal, practice exam and renewal costs as well.

Short answer

As checked on October 25, 2026, NPCB's FNP certification exam costs $240 for AANP members and $315 for nonmembers, and a retake costs the same. The member price is a $75 discount you claim with your membership number when you apply or by email within 30 days. Other charges depend on what happens next: $50 to reschedule 5 to 29 days before your test, a $75 eligibility reset, a $120 processing fee kept from a withdrawal refund, and $50 for each optional NPCB practice exam.

AANPCB FNP exam fees as of October 25, 2026

The FNP certification exam costs $240 for AANP members and $315 for nonmembers, and a retake after a failed attempt costs exactly the same. You pay when you submit the online application, which cannot be sent without payment. These are NPCB's own figures from its certification page, as checked on October 25, 2026. The handbook adds that NPCB can revise fees at any time, so check the amount on the day you apply.

NPCB feeAANP memberNonmember
FNP certification exam$240$315
Retake exam$240$315
Renewal by practice hours and CE$120$195
Renewal by exam$240$315

These fees are NPCB's alone. ANCC's FNP-BC exam has a separate price list, which the AANPCB vs ANCC comparison for 2027 covers. Study materials are a separate budget line too. The AANPCB FNP prep page lists Passy's planned one-time access prices, from $19.99 for 30 days to $49.99 for 180 days, but full prep is still being built and checkout is not open.

Claiming the $75 AANP member discount on the FNP exam

The $75 difference is a member discount, not a separate fee tier. To get it:

  • Enter your AANP membership number in your NPCB online profile or on the application before you submit it
  • If you forgot, email certification@aanpcert.org within 30 days of applying with the membership number and its expiration date
  • Make sure the membership is current, because NPCB's system flags an expired or invalid number

NPCB's handbook ties the FNP discount to AANP membership. The AAENP discount applies to the Emergency NP exam. AANP sets its own dues, so compare the current price on AANP's site with $75 per application before joining only for the discount. An active membership saves $75 again on a retake or a renewal.

AANPCB FNP fees that depend on what happens next

Most extra costs come from deadlines. As checked on October 25, 2026, from NPCB's FAQ and handbook:

What happensCost
You reschedule or cancel 30 or more days before the testNo fee
You reschedule or cancel 5 to 29 days before$50, collected by Prometric
You change less than 5 days before, miss the appointment or arrive more than 30 minutes lateThe full test delivery fee. NPCB does not publish the amount
You miss the exam or let the 120-day window expireAn eligibility reset: $75, nonrefundable, one per application, within a year of the original application, approval not guaranteed
You cannot get a resetA new application and the full exam fee again
You withdraw before scheduling and before the window expiresA partial refund, minus a $120 processing fee
You withdraw after scheduling, cancel within 24 hours, no-show or let the window expireNo refund
NPCB denies your applicationA partial refund, minus a processing fee
You request a rescore after a failA review fee that NPCB does not list publicly

The Prometric tiers have applied since July 1, 2025, according to the FAQ. The AANPCB FNP application guide explains the window and the reset in context.

Optional NPCB costs: practice exams and verification

  • NPCB practice exams: $50 each. NPCB offers 7 Family NP practice tests of 50 questions in 60 minutes. Each purchase can be taken once, and you can buy more than one
  • Verification for a state board of nursing: free, sent when you request it
  • Primary source verification for employers or credentialing organizations: $50 per verification, nonrefundable

NPCB says its practice exams do not predict a pass and are not designed to diagnose weak areas. If you only want to test yourself on the four practice domains first, the 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions cost nothing and need no account. For a larger bank later, full AANPCB FNP prep is planned with 1,150 questions and 580 flashcards, sold as one-time access with no subscription once it launches.

Passy arithmetic: four AANPCB FNP cost scenarios

These totals use NPCB's fees as checked on October 25, 2026. They leave out AANP dues, travel and study materials.

ScenarioMemberNonmember
Pass on the first attempt, no schedule changes$240$315
Reschedule once, 2 weeks before the test, then pass$240 + $50 = $290$315 + $50 = $365
Miss the window, get a reset, fail once, retake and pass$240 + $75 + $240 = $555$315 + $75 + $315 = $705
Withdraw before scheduling: amount refunded$240 − $120 = $120$315 − $120 = $195

The refund row assumes the $120 is deducted from the fee you paid, which is how NPCB's FAQ words it.

The third row is the expensive one. Booking early in the window avoids the $75 reset, and moving appointments more than 30 days out avoids the $50 fee, but a retake always costs a full exam fee. The AANPCB FNP retake guide covers the rules behind the retake fee.

FNP-C costs after you pass: renewal every 5 years

An NPCB certification lasts five years. You can renew up to one year before it expires, either by practice hours and continuing education ($120 member, $195 nonmember) or by taking the exam again ($240 or $315). NPCB's FAQ lists the practice route as at least 100 contact hours of CE, including 25 in pharmacology, plus at least 1,000 hours of NP practice during the five years. Plan for that renewal fee in the year your certification expires, not now.

For the first exam fee, the cheapest outcome is passing on the first attempt inside your original window, so your study plan matters as much as the discount. Full AANPCB FNP prep, planned around the same four domains, will add a timed 150-question mock exam at launch.
