AANPCB FNP Passing Score: What NPCB Publishes and How Results Arrive
NPCB sets the FNP pass mark by standard setting and does not report a percentage correct. What the June 2026 handbook says, where the popular 500 figure comes from, and how a preliminary pass becomes an official result.
Short answer
NPCB does not publish a percentage or a number of correct answers needed to pass the FNP exam. Its FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026) says candidates must meet a passing score set by recognized standard-setting methodology, and that scores are not reported as a percentage correct. The "500 on a 200 to 800 scale" figure repeated on prep sites does not appear on any current NPCB page checked on October 25, 2026. You see a preliminary pass or fail at the test center, and the result becomes official only when NPCB releases it.
The AANPCB FNP passing score, in NPCB's own words
NPCB does not publish a target such as "answer 70% correctly." The FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026) says only that you must meet a passing score set with a recognized standard-setting method, and that "scores are not reported as a percentage of correct answers." As checked on October 25, 2026, neither the handbook nor the FNP certification page prints a cut score, a scale or a number of correct answers.
Two more facts shape what "passing" means:
- Only the 135 scored questions count. The other 15 of the 150 are pretest questions that look the same as scored ones and do not affect your result
- NPCB's practice-exam page says practice scores are reported as percentages and, unlike certification exam scores, are not scaled. That implies the certification exam is scored on a scale, even though NPCB does not publish that scale today
Where the "500 on a 200 to 800 scale" figure comes from
Search for the FNP passing score and most prep sites answer: a scaled score of 500 on a range of 200 to 800. That figure is widely repeated, but it is not on NPCB's current pages. NPCB's scoring page, which search results still list as "How Examinations are Scored," now opens as About Scaled Scores and shows only annual report downloads. The 06/2026 handbook has no scale at all.
What that means for you:
- Treat 500 as an unconfirmed, possibly older description, not as a current NPCB rule
- No published figure lets you convert a number of correct answers into a pass, so a "you need about X%" estimate is guesswork
- The only targets NPCB publishes are the blueprint counts: 43 Assess, 36 Diagnose, 36 Plan and 20 Evaluate items out of 135. The AANPCB FNP prep page shows the same four domains as percentages
In certification testing, standard setting ties the pass mark to a defined level of entry-level competence rather than to how many other candidates pass. NPCB does not publish which method it uses or the resulting cut. If you need a definitive answer, ask NPCB at certification@aanpcert.org.
Why an NPCB practice-exam percentage is not the FNP cut score
NPCB sells its own FNP practice exams: 7 forms, each 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, at $50 per form, as checked on October 25, 2026. The pace matches the real exam, since 60 minutes for 50 questions and 180 minutes for 150 questions both give you 72 seconds a question. But NPCB says the percentage you get is not a predictor of passing, and that the practice exams are not built to diagnose strengths and weaknesses.
The same caution applies to any practice score, Passy's included. The 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions show which practice domains and age groups trip you up. They cannot estimate a scaled score. For rehearsing the full 3-hour sitting, the timed 150-question mock exam planned for full AANPCB FNP prep at launch is the closer match, though it will not predict a pass either.
From a preliminary pass to an official FNP-C result
- At the Prometric center. You get a preliminary pass or fail on screen as soon as you finish.
- NPCB review. The preliminary result is not official until NPCB has reviewed your eligibility, exam result and required documents, including the final official transcript if you tested before your degree was conferred.
- Official release. NPCB sends an official score notification and posts the result in your online profile. It does not give results by phone.
- If you passed. Your score letter, wall certificate and wallet card appear in your NPCB account. NPCB's FAQ says it mails a printed wall certificate within 3 weeks of release.
- If you did not pass. The FAQ says your score letter is uploaded to the "Exam & Renewal Documents" section of your account within 3 to 5 business days and emailed to you.
State boards of nursing see your certification only when you request verification, which NPCB sends at no charge. NPCB says it does not report exam failures to state boards. Your NP program may receive your pass or fail status for program evaluation unless you opted out during the application.
What an AANPCB FNP score letter can and cannot tell you
The handbook and FAQ do not describe what a failing score letter breaks down, so check yours when it arrives. If it shows performance by practice domain, use it. If it does not, the AANPCB FNP retake planner lets you rate how each of the four domains felt and weights your study by the official blueprint.
If you believe the score was calculated wrongly, you can email NPCB for a rescore. It only checks that your score was computed correctly. It does not review questions, testing conditions or the passing standard, and a review fee applies that NPCB does not list publicly. The AANPCB FNP retake guide covers the next attempt.
Official AANPCB FNP pass rates for 2024 and 2025
NPCB publishes yearly statistics on initial certification exams, including the first-time pass rate. For the Family NP exam:
| Year and group | Initial exams administered | First-time pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| 2025, all FNP candidates | 15,395 | 81% |
| 2025, master's | 13,101 | 80% |
| 2025, post-graduate certificate | 1,024 | 77% |
| 2025, DNP | 1,270 | 88% |
| 2024, all FNP candidates | 15,491 | 83% |
These describe groups, not your odds. A pass rate counts how many people cleared the standard. It is not the standard itself and says nothing about the number of questions you must answer correctly. The AANPCB vs ANCC guide sets these next to ANCC's own figure.
When you are ready to study against that standard, see how full AANPCB FNP prep is organized by practice domain. It is still being built with no launch date set, and checkout is not open, so for now the free practice set and planners are the parts you can use.
