FNP-C Renewal With NPCB: 1,000 Practice Hours and 100 CE Hours, or the Exam

NPCB certification lasts five years. You renew FNP-C either with 1,000 practice hours plus 100 CE contact hours, 25 of them in advanced pharmacology, or by passing the FNP exam again before your expiration date. Requirements, fees, timing, audits and what happens if certification lapses.

Short answer

NPCB grants FNP certification for five years, and you renew it in one of two ways, completed within that five-year period. The first is at least 1,000 hours of practice as an FNP plus at least 100 advanced practice CE contact hours, including 25 in advanced pharmacology. The second is passing the FNP certification exam again before your certification expires. Either way you need a current, active RN license in the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As checked on October 28, 2026, renewal by practice and CE costs $120 for AANP members or $195 otherwise, and renewal by exam $240 or $315.

FNP-C renewal requirements as of October 28, 2026

NPCB certification is time-limited: an FNP-C lasts five years, and every renewal requirement must be met inside that five-year period. NPCB's FNP Renewal Handbook (updated 06/2026) gives two routes.

Renewal by practice hours and CERenewal by examination
PracticeAt least 1,000 hours as a Family Nurse PractitionerNot required
Continuing educationAt least 100 advanced practice CE contact hours, including at least 25 in advanced pharmacologyNot required
ExamNot requiredPass the FNP certification exam before your certification expires
LicenseA current, active U.S. or U.S. territory RN license throughoutSame
Fee (AANP member / nonmember)$120 / $195$240 / $315

The fees come from NPCB's certification page, which says AANP members get a $75 discount on renewal applications as well as initial ones. NPCB's candidate handbook reserves the right to revise fees at any time, so check the amount when you apply. The AANPCB FNP exam cost guide lists NPCB's other fees.

Renewal by practice hours: what counts toward the 1,000

The handbook accepts practice hours in four roles:

  • Direct patient care as an FNP. Telehealth, volunteer practice and faculty clinical supervision of NP students may also qualify
  • Administration: leadership, management or supervisory work related to advanced practice or healthcare operations
  • Education: clinical supervision or didactic teaching in an NP program, or teaching advanced practice providers in other settings
  • Research related to patient outcomes, quality improvement, evidence-based practice or practice innovation relevant to NP practice

Student clinical hours from your academic program do not count. Neither the handbook nor the FAQ asks you to upload a log of these hours: you attest to them on the application, and NPCB can ask for proof in an audit.

The 100 CE contact hours and the 25 in pharmacology

CE must be relevant to Family Nurse Practitioner practice, completed during your current certification period, and awarded by an accredited provider. The pharmacology hours count inside the 100, not on top of them, and should cover pharmacotherapeutics, safe prescribing or the pharmacological management of acute and chronic conditions across the lifespan.

ActivityHow NPCB treats it
Accredited CE for advanced practice or health professionalsCounts toward the 100 hours
ACLS, PALS, NRP, ABLS, ALSO or ATLSAccepted toward CE
Graduate or post-graduate coursework during the period1 semester credit = 15 CE hours, 1 quarter credit = 10 CE hours
Precepting advanced practice students in direct patient careUp to 120 preceptorship hours, converted to at most 25 non-pharmacology CE hours
Basic Life Support (BLS)Not accepted
A certification or credential awarded without CE creditNot accepted

NPCB's preceptorship conversion table gives about 1 CE hour per 5 precepted hours: 1 CE for 1 to 5 hours, 2 for 6 to 10, and so on up to 25 CE for 120 hours or more. Eligible students come from accredited NP, PA, medical, pharmacy or dental programs. Employee orientation, residency or fellowship supervision, onboarding credentialed providers and supervision outside direct patient care do not count.

Passy practice questions, including the question bank planned for AANPCB FNP prep, are study material, not accredited continuing education, and do not count toward NPCB's CE requirement.

FNP-C renewal by examination

Instead of practice hours and CE, you can renew by passing the FNP certification exam before your certification expires. You submit a Renewal by Examination application, wait for approval, and only then schedule with Prometric, according to NPCB's Renewal Application Process page. The renewal handbook points to the FNP Candidate Handbook for everything else: exam content, scheduling, accommodations, scores and retakes.

That means a renewal candidate sits the same exam as a new graduate: 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours on the 2024 FNP blueprint, as checked on October 28, 2026. The AANPCB FNP exam format and test day guide covers what that sitting involves, and planned AANPCB FNP prep is written for that same 2024 blueprint, so it applies to a renewal attempt as well. NPCB's Renew page offers renewal by exam for FNP, AGNP, PMHNP and ENP certificants. ANP and GNP certificants must renew by practice and CE, because those exams have been retired.

When to apply for FNP-C renewal, and how long it takes

  • Earliest date. NPCB's FAQ says you can submit a renewal application up to one year before your certification expires, and encourages early renewal so your certification stays active
  • Where. Sign in, then choose "Renew Your Certification" from your dashboard. If you changed your email address and cannot sign in, NPCB says you can create a new account and its staff will link it to your certification record
  • Processing. The FAQ says most complete applications are processed within 3 to 5 business days. Incomplete or incorrect submissions take longer
  • Exam route timing. Approval, scheduling and a passing result all have to happen before your expiration date, so the exam route needs more lead time than the practice and CE route

Attestation, audits and the CE documents you keep

Renewal runs on attestation. You agree to a statement that your information is accurate and that you met the requirements during the certification period, and you do not upload documents unless NPCB asks. NPCB audits renewal applications, and if you are selected it may ask for CE certificates, coursework records, preceptorship verification letters or proof of practice hours. The handbook says to keep that documentation for at least two years after your renewal deadline.

NPCB's Recertification Process Update, posted in April 2026, adds two details: CE documentation is temporarily not visible in your online account, though previously submitted records remain on file, and the AANP CE Tracker still works for sharing CE with NPCB. NPCB asks certificants to keep their own CE records in the meantime.

If your FNP-C lapses, or you retire

  • Expired certification. You may not use the NP-C credential or represent yourself as certified. The renewal handbook says to email NPCB for instructions and an eligibility review, and the candidate handbook says regaining certification means meeting current eligibility requirements and following the applicable process
  • Short of hours. NPCB asks certificants who cannot meet the practice and CE requirements to contact it about available renewal options
  • Retirement. NPCB now offers a retired status for certificants who permanently stop NP practice, an option its 2025 Annual Report says launched in 2026. You request it by email, a fee applies, and retired status does not allow you to use FNP-C for practice

State boards of nursing have their own requirements for APRN licensure. NPCB's renewal handbook says FNPs must comply with them, and that certification does not authorize practice beyond the scope permitted by applicable laws, regulations or licensing authorities.

Choosing between the two FNP-C renewal routes

Passy's editorial comparison, using NPCB's rules and fees above:

If this describes youThe route that usually fits
You practiced as an FNP for 1,000 hours or more and kept your CE currentPractice hours and CE: lower fee, no exam, processing in days
You precept regularlyPractice hours and CE, using up to 25 non-pharmacology CE hours from precepting
You fell short of 1,000 FNP practice hours in the five yearsAsk NPCB about your options, or plan for renewal by exam well before expiration
You prefer to retest rather than document CERenewal by exam, with enough time to apply, schedule and pass before expiration

An experienced NP renewing by exam may need less review than a new graduate, but the exam still covers newborn to older adult. If a short refresher is your plan, the 30-day AANPCB FNP access period planned for launch is the shortest of the three options.

Start with the date on your certificate, then work backward.
