AANPCB FNP Exam Format and Test Day: 150 Questions, 3 Hours, No Early Stop

Every NPCB FNP exam has 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours at a Prometric test center, so it does not end early the way an adaptive test can. What NPCB says about ID, late arrival, the result on screen and what you may share afterward.

Short answer

The AANPCB FNP exam is a computer-based test of 150 multiple-choice questions, 135 scored and 15 unscored pretest, with 3 hours to finish. NPCB says every exam has 150 questions and does not describe it as adaptive, so it does not stop early. You take it at a Prometric test center. NPCB's documents describe no at-home option. Bring valid identification that exactly matches the name on your NPCB account, arrive on time, and expect a preliminary pass or fail on screen when you finish.

The AANPCB FNP exam format at a glance

NPCB's FNP exam is one sitting of 150 multiple-choice questions on a computer at a Prometric test center. These are the details NPCB publishes in its FNP Candidate Handbook (updated 06/2026) and on its FNP certification page, as checked on October 28, 2026.

ItemWhat NPCB says
Questions150 multiple-choice questions on every exam
Scored135. Your score is based only on these
Pretest15 unscored questions that cannot be told apart from scored ones
Time3 hours
DeliveryComputer-based, at Prometric test centers
ContentThe 2024 FNP Examination Blueprint: four practice domains and eight patient age groups
ResultA preliminary pass or fail right after you finish, then an official result from NPCB

NPCB describes every item as multiple choice and lists no other item formats. To see how the questions read in each domain, the AANPCB FNP question breakdown has original examples.

Is the AANPCB FNP exam adaptive?

NPCB's pages answer the practical part of this question: "There are 150 questions on each examination." Every candidate gets all 150, and the exam does not shut off once a result looks clear. NPCB does not describe its FNP exam as adaptive anywhere in the handbook, the FAQ or the exam pages checked for this guide, so a claim that question difficulty adjusts to your answers is not an NPCB statement.

Two practical consequences follow. You cannot read anything into how hard the questions feel, because a hard stretch is not a sign that you are failing or passing. And because the 15 pretest questions look like the scored ones, a strange or unfamiliar question may not count at all. Answer it as well as you can and move on.

How long the AANPCB FNP exam takes, and how to pace it

You have 3 hours for 150 questions, about 72 seconds a question in Passy arithmetic. A simple pace check:

Time usedPace to stay on
1 hourAbout question 50
2 hoursAbout question 100
3 hoursQuestion 150, with no time banked

Staying slightly ahead of that line gives you a few minutes at the end for questions you flagged. NPCB's handbook does not describe breaks, a tutorial or how the clock behaves if you step out, so ask Prometric about the rules for your appointment rather than relying on another exam's policy. To practice holding that pace, the planned AANPCB FNP mock exam runs 150 questions in one timed 3-hour sitting, and NPCB's own practice exams time 50 questions at the same rate.

Where you take the FNP exam: Prometric test centers

NPCB's FAQ says its exams are given by Prometric at testing centers worldwide. If you are deployed or cannot find a test center near you, it asks you to email certification@aanpcert.org about alternate testing site options. The NPCB documents checked for this guide describe test-center delivery only and mention no at-home or remote-proctored option.

There are no fixed national test dates. Once your Authorization to Test (ATT) email arrives, you schedule through "Schedule Exam" in your NPCB account, enter your eligibility ID and the first four letters of your last name on Prometric's site, and pick a center and date. NPCB says online registration is available 24/7, appointments depend on center availability, and you have 120 days to schedule and sit the exam. The AANPCB FNP application guide covers the steps before the ATT.

The NPCB ID and name rules that can keep you out

NPCB is strict about names. The Exam Overview page says the legal first and last name in your NPCB profile is what it sends to Prometric, and it must exactly match the name on the government-issued identification you present. The handbook adds that candidates must present valid identification that exactly matches the name on their NPCB account and exam registration, or they may be denied admission.

  • Create or correct your profile in your legal name, not a nickname or a former name
  • If your legal name changes after you schedule, contact NPCB before test day, as the handbook requires
  • A wrong name can mean you cannot test, plus extra fees to correct it or reset your eligibility

Arriving late or missing your NPCB FNP appointment

The handbook says candidates who arrive late, fail to appear or do not meet testing requirements may be denied entry and may forfeit fees. NPCB's FAQ lists late arrivals of more than 30 minutes alongside missed appointments: the full test delivery fee applies. You then need an eligibility reset, which NPCB allows once per application, for a $75 nonrefundable fee and at its discretion, as checked on October 28, 2026. NPCB's handbook does not say how early to arrive, so follow the time in your Prometric confirmation and leave a buffer for traffic and check-in.

Changing the appointment in advance costs less. The AANPCB FNP exam cost guide lists the reschedule tiers: no fee 30 or more days ahead, $50 from 5 to 29 days, and the full delivery fee inside 5 days.

FNP testing accommodations come before scheduling

If you need accommodations, the order matters. NPCB says to wait for your eligibility email, submit the request to Prometric, and not schedule until Prometric approves it. Requests sent before your eligibility file reaches Prometric cannot be matched to you and may delay the process. NPCB's FAQ says an approved accommodation is valid for one year.

After the last FNP question: the preliminary result

You see a preliminary pass or fail as soon as you finish. The handbook says it becomes official only after NPCB reviews your eligibility, exam result and required documents, including the final official transcript showing your degree and its conferral date, which NPCB needs before it releases certification. NPCB does not give results by phone. If you did not pass, the FAQ says your score letter reaches your NPCB account within 3 to 5 business days. The AANPCB FNP passing score guide covers the rest of the result process.

What you may share after the FNP exam

NPCB's examination security policy says exam content is confidential and protected by federal copyright law, and may not be copied, reproduced, disclosed, distributed, recorded or discussed in any form before, during or after the exam. Violations can lead to invalidated results, disciplinary action or legal action. The blueprint itself is public, so the domain and age-group counts are fair to discuss. Describing or reconstructing questions you saw, in a forum post or a conversation, is the kind of disclosure NPCB prohibits. Passy's free practice set and the 1,150 original questions planned for AANPCB FNP prep are written from scratch and contain no NPCB items.

A test-day checklist for the AANPCB FNP exam

Passy's suggested checklist, built from NPCB's rules above:

  1. A week before. Confirm the date, time and center in your Prometric confirmation, and that your NPCB profile name matches your ID letter for letter.
  2. The day before. Set out your valid government-issued ID. Plan the route and a buffer, because arriving more than 30 minutes late costs the full delivery fee.
  3. At check-in. Follow the test center's instructions. NPCB says failing to meet testing center requirements can mean denied admission or a terminated exam.
  4. During the exam. Check your pace at roughly question 50 and question 100, flag and move on from questions that stall you, and answer every question.
  5. At the end. Note the preliminary result, then watch your NPCB account and email, including spam, for the official notification.

For the last few days before your appointment, a Test Day checklist and a Cram plan are listed for AANPCB FNP prep at launch. Full prep is still being built and checkout is not open, but you can already rehearse with the 20 free AANPCB FNP practice questions and set your weeks with the free AANPCB FNP study planner.
