MFT National Exam Test Day: Prometric Check-In, ID Rules, Lockers and What to Do If Something Goes Wrong
What to bring to the AMFTRB MFT National Exam, what happens at Prometric check-in, which items stay in the locker, and the exact steps and deadlines if the center, the computer or the weather lets you down. Based on the 2026 and 2027 handbooks and AMFTRB's FAQ.
Short answer
Bring one current, government-issued photo ID whose first and last name exactly match your Scheduling Authorization. Expired, temporary and paper IDs are refused, and so are digital IDs under the 2027 handbook; a candidate turned away is a no-show and loses the fee. At the Prometric center you lock away your phone, bag, watch, jacket and most jewelry, turn out your pockets and pass a metal detector or wand. Inside you get two sheets of paper and a pencil, a short tutorial that doesn't use exam time, and 4 hours with no scheduled break.
The MFT exam ID rule that can make you a no-show
An ID problem can end your exam before it starts. Both handbooks set the same core rule, and the 2027 handbook adds digital IDs to the refused list:
| Accepted | Refused |
|---|---|
| Current driver's license, passport, state non-driver ID or U.S. military ID, with a photo | Expired, temporary, paper or digital IDs (digital named in the 2027 handbook) |
| First and last name exactly as on your PTC Scheduling Authorization | Any first or last name that doesn't match |
The handbook says proctors deny entry if there's any problem with the ID, the candidate is marked a no-show, and fees aren't refunded. A no-show also can't transfer to another window. Check both now: is the ID valid on your test date, and does the name match the Scheduling Authorization email letter for letter? If it doesn't, contact PTC well before the day; AMFTRB's FAQ says PTC makes corrections to applications.
In the week before your appointment
The handbooks' checklist, in a practical order:
- Reread both emails. The PTC Scheduling Authorization and the Prometric appointment confirmation should show the same name, the exam, the date, the time and the center. Call Prometric at (800) 741-0934 if anything is wrong.
- Plan the route. Find the center and its parking, and check weather and traffic the day before. The handbook warns that arriving late may prevent you from testing.
- Know where closures are posted. In bad weather, Prometric lists closed sites at prometric.com/closures.
- Look at the software. PTC publishes a Prometric software tutorial (linked from the handbook), and you'll also get a short tutorial on the day.
- Arrange anything that might need your phone. The candidate agreement says to settle child care, elder care and pet care beforehand, because you can't touch your phone during the exam.
If test centers make you anxious, AMFTRB's roadmap mentions Prometric's Test Drive, a paid 30-minute rehearsal of check-in, ID confirmation, seating and a sample test. For the study side of the last few days, full prep planned for launch includes Cram, which plans your final days before the exam.
What to bring to the MFT National Exam, and what stays in the locker
| Bring with you | Leave at home, in the car or in the locker |
|---|---|
| Your accepted photo ID | Phone and every other electronic device |
| Water in a clear plastic container with no label (inspected) | Smart glasses such as Meta glasses and other recording devices (2027 handbook) |
| Snacks, drinks and medicine, kept in the locker for breaks | Watches and wearable technology |
| Earplugs, if you want them (AMFTRB's FAQ suggests bringing your own and telling PTC) | Jackets, coats and bulky clothing such as hoodies |
| Eyeglasses and wedding or engagement rings (inspected) | Hats, except religious headwear (inspected) |
| Other jewelry, bags, wallets, notes and books |
Prometric provides lockers for bags, phones, jackets, food, drinks and medical supplies. You can't bring your own paper: AMFTRB's FAQ says the center gives you two sheets and a pencil, which you return before leaving. Headphones can be requested to block ambient noise.
Prometric check-in, step by step
- Store your belongings in the assigned locker, with your phone powered off.
- Show your ID to the proctor.
- Empty and turn out your pockets.
- Pass security screening: a metal detector or a hand wand. Eyeglasses, rings, religious headwear and your water bottle are inspected.
- Sign the candidate agreement. The handbook says you sign a copy at the test site before the exam starts, confirming you'll keep the content confidential and follow the rules.
- Do the tutorial. AMFTRB's FAQ says it explains selecting answers and moving between questions, that most candidates take 5 to 10 minutes, that you can repeat it, and that its time doesn't count against your 4 hours.
The room is shared. The handbook says other exams run at the same time, proctors walk through periodically, sessions are monitored and may be audio and video recorded, and the center can't promise silence.
During the exam: the rules that end sessions
The format guide covers pacing, marking items and moving between questions. On the day, these are the rules with the harshest consequences:
- Phones are off-limits for any reason. The 2027 handbook says accessing your phone at any time, including on a break, ends the exam immediately, unscored, with all fees forfeited, and AMFTRB is notified.
- Breaks are unscheduled and the clock runs. You may leave the room only for the restroom or your locker, and from the locker you may take only snacks, drinks, medicine or personal healthcare items. You repeat security screening before going back in. The timer isn't paused.
- Leaving the building ends the exam. The candidate agreement says leaving the center without telling staff terminates the session and invalidates the score.
- Exiting can't be undone. If you sign out or press the exit key, even by mistake, the session can't be restarted and the exam is scored as is.
- No questions about content. Read the on-screen directions at the start; proctors can't help with items.
Because nothing pauses, the sitting itself is worth rehearsing. Full prep planned for launch lets you practice one timed four-hour sitting on the mock exam.
If something goes wrong at the test center
| Problem | What AMFTRB and the handbooks say to do |
|---|---|
| Start is delayed | Tell the proctor. The FAQ says you still get all your time once the delay is resolved |
| Computer malfunctions | Tell the proctor at once. Once it's fixed you resume with the time you had left. If it can't be fixed, leave and contact PTC; you may need to reschedule and start again from the beginning |
| Glare on the screen | Tilt the monitor or adjust the chair, then tell the proctor if that doesn't help |
| Noise or other conditions affect you | Tell the proctor immediately, then report to PTC at ptcny.com/contact within 2 business days (2027 handbook; the 2026 handbook allows 3) |
| You think an item has an error | Report it to PTC within 5 business days (2027 handbook; 3 in 2026), or use the comment survey at the end of the exam |
| Center closed for weather or technical problems | The handbook says you're rescheduled within the window if time allows or transferred to a new window at no cost. Contact PTC right away |
Report problems at the time, even if you think you did well: the FAQ's advice for candidates who fail mentions contacting PTC about a technology failure or other problem that "was reported to the proctor at the time of the exam." Don't expect a score change, though. The 2027 handbook says AMFTRB won't change a score, or turn a fail into a pass, to correct a problem in administration. Separately, if AMFTRB cancels a score because it finds you took part in an irregularity, AMFTRB's appeals policy lets you appeal within 30 days. Nervousness or anxiety isn't grounds for an appeal.
Late, ill or unable to test that day
- Late arrival may mean you can't test, and missing your appointment makes you a no-show.
- Fewer than 5 days before your appointment, Prometric won't reschedule. From 29 to 5 days before, rescheduling within the window costs $50 (2026) or $60 (2027); 30 or more days before, it's free.
- Moving to another window is a one-time transfer through PTC ($180 in 2026, $199 in 2027), requested by the new window's application deadline. The 2026 handbook says no reason is needed and medical excuses aren't considered.
- Not showing up forfeits the full fee and rules out a transfer; you reapply and pay again.
The registration guide has the full reschedule and transfer rules. If a medical condition affects how you test, rather than when, that's an accommodation request, made with your application at least 8 weeks ahead; the accommodations and ELL guide explains it.
When you finish the MFT National Exam
You leave with a notice of completion only. Scores are finalized after the whole window closes, and the 2027 handbook says PTC emails directions to your score report about four weeks later. The MFT exam dates guide shows the rough timing for each window.
What you saw stays confidential: the candidate agreement bars sharing items or parts of items in any medium, including study groups and online forums. For the morning of a future sitting, full prep planned for launch includes a calm Test Day checklist, and the 20 free MFT practice questions work now for a last warm-up.
