Ohio LSW Exam: Which ASWB Exam BSW Graduates Take and the Board Steps Before It

Ohio's Licensed Social Worker title covers both BSW and MSW graduates, and the degree decides the ASWB exam. Here are the Ohio board's steps in order, the fees, the final-semester and temporary-license rules, how long exam approval lasts, and Ohio's 2025 Bachelors results.

Short answer

In Ohio, BSW graduates take the ASWB Bachelors exam for the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) license, and MSW graduates take the Masters exam for the same title. You apply first to Ohio's Counselor and Social Worker Board on eLicense (US$80 plus a US$3.50 processing fee), select the bachelor's exam, and wait for the board's exam approval email. Then you register with ASWB (US$230) and test at a Pearson center. The approval lasts 12 months. The license also requires the board's Laws and Rules video, BCI and FBI background checks, and an official transcript showing your degree.

Ohio uses the ASWB Bachelors exam more than any other jurisdiction. In 2025 its board authorized 995 Bachelors exams, according to ASWB's jurisdiction report, close to three times as many as Texas. Yet the license itself doesn't say "bachelor's": Ohio's Licensed Social Worker (LSW) is open to BSW and MSW graduates alike, and your degree decides which ASWB exam you take for it.

Ohio's LSW: one license title, two ASWB exams

These rules come from the Ohio Counselor and Social Worker Board's licensing pages, as checked on October 27, 2026:

Your degreeExam you select on the Ohio application
Bachelor's in social work (BSW, BSSW or BASW), or in its final semesterBachelor's exam (ASWB Bachelors)
CSWE-accredited master's in social work (MSW or MSSA), or in its final semesterMaster's exam (ASWB Masters)
Doctorate in social workAlso eligible for the LSW
A degree in another field, such as psychology or sociologyNot eligible. The board says degrees in other fields are no longer accepted

The board's LSW FAQ, a page dated May 11, 2020, adds that bachelor's and doctoral degrees must come from a regionally accredited school (it names the Council for Higher Education Accreditation), and master's degrees from a CSWE-accredited program.

Two other Ohio registrations aren't routes for a BSW student. The Social Work Trainee (SWT) registration is for students in a master's program. The Social Work Assistant (SWA) is based on a social service technology degree, and the board says it isn't a registration for BSW students doing an internship. And Ohio's independent license, the LISW, requires a CSWE-accredited master's degree plus supervised experience, so the LSW is the highest Ohio social work license open to a BSW graduate.

The Ohio LSW steps in order

  1. Apply on eLicense. Create an account at Ohio's eLicense site, choose the LSW application, and pay the US$80 fee plus a US$3.50 processing fee. Upload documents as PDF or Word files only.
  2. Select the bachelor's exam and attach a diploma, an unofficial transcript, or a letter of good standing with your anticipated graduation date.
  3. Wait for the exam approval email. The board's FAQ says to allow 5 to 10 business days. The email is often caught in spam filters. If your eLicense dashboard shows "Exam Eligible," the board says you can go to ASWB's exam registration site even without the email.
  4. Register and pay ASWB. The Bachelors exam costs US$230. ASWB then emails your scheduling information for a Pearson VUE test center.
  5. Finish the other requirements, in any order. Watch the board's Laws and Rules video, complete BCI and FBI background checks, and have your school send an official transcript showing your conferred degree.
  6. Track it all in eLicense. Review Status on your license tile shows whether the board has received your background checks, transcript and exam score.

If the name on your government ID differs from the name you applied under, the board asks you to contact it for instructions. ASWB's own registration, scheduling and test-day rules apply from step 4, and how to register for the ASWB Bachelors exam covers them, including the cancellation deadlines that can cost you the fee.

The board says background checks are valid for one year once completed, and an FBI check can't be resubmitted, so time them with your application. Ohio's exam approval also runs for 12 months, and if you plan to study inside that window, planned 30-, 90- and 180-day access that fits inside Ohio's 12-month exam approval is listed for launch. Applying in your final BSW semester in Ohio

Ohio is explicit: if you're in the final semester of your social work program, you may apply and begin the process at any time. The letter of good standing has to be a PDF on school letterhead, signed by the program director or a designee, with:

  • your full name
  • the degree type, with social work as the major
  • your anticipated completion date, or confirmation that you are in your final semester
  • confirmation that you are in academic good standing

A PDF of an email from the program office is also acceptable. You can take the exam before you graduate, but the board says your license can't be issued until you've graduated and it has an official transcript showing the degree conferred. Schools can take one to four weeks after graduation to post a degree. If that is the only missing piece, the board's FAQ says you may be eligible for a temporary license, applied for through the "Temporary Application" option in the LSW quick links.

If you don't pass the Bachelors exam the first time in Ohio

Ohio's instructions say you don't need a new exam approval after a failed attempt. You can keep registering under ASWB's policies as long as your approval, which is valid for 12 months, hasn't expired. If it has, select Exam Re-approval under Options on your LSW license tile.

ASWB's rules then apply as everywhere:

  • 90 days between attempts, counted to your next test date.
  • A waiver of the wait is possible only if your score was within 10 correct answers of passing and the board allows waivers. ASWB names California and North Dakota as the jurisdictions that don't. The Ohio pages checked for this guide don't say either way, so ask the board before you count on one.
  • US$230 again for each new registration.

How Ohio's Bachelors candidates did in 2025

From ASWB's 2025 pass-rate report for Ohio, dated May 2026:

Bachelors exams authorized by OhioExamsPassedOhio pass rateUS and Canada pass rate
First-time70652374.1%70.4%
Repeat28913045.0%41.0%
Total99565365.6%62.0%

ASWB's pass-rate page counts 2,741 first-time Bachelors exams across all its member jurisdictions in 2025, so Ohio's 706 were about one in four. Two cautions: every 2025 exam used the retired 2018 version, and the current version started on August 3, 2026. And a group pass rate isn't your probability of passing. What it does show is that Ohio candidates face the same exam as everyone else, with first-time results a little above the US and Canada figure.

The current version has three content areas instead of four, so check that your materials describe 122 questions. Practice planned for launch is written to the 2026 Bachelors outline Ohio candidates now take, and the 20 free ASWB Bachelors practice questions already follow it.

After you pass: from exam result to Ohio LSW

The board's FAQ says passing doesn't issue the license automatically: it is issued once every step is complete, generally within 5 to 10 business days of the board having everything. You'll get an email saying you may now call yourself an LSW, with a wall certificate attached. Applicants with a criminal conviction should allow more time, because the board says background check results can take up to 30 days to arrive and the file may need board review, and the board meets every 60 days.

The LSW then renews every two years, with 30 hours of continuing education that include 3 hours of ethics. If you later earn an MSW and want the LISW, Ohio requires the ASWB Clinical exam: the board stopped accepting the Advanced Generalist exam for the LISW as of July 10, 2026, and says it will consider exceptions for people who had already started training supervision by then.

If you are deciding between licensing now with your BSW and waiting for an MSW, LBSW vs LMSW compares the two paths, including how Ohio's single title differs from other states.
