CAPM Exam Cost: The $225 or $300 Fee, Membership Math and the Other Charges

PMI's CAPM page showed US$225 for members and US$300 full price on October 27, 2026. Here is when you pay, when membership pays for itself, and the late-change, no-show, retake and renewal costs that catch people out.

Short answer

When checked on October 27, 2026, PMI's CAPM page showed an exam fee of $225 for PMI members and $300 full price, in US dollars. PMI says prices can vary by membership status and region, and the member rate applies only if your membership is in place before you pay. You pay only after PMI accepts your application. Budget also for the 23 hours of education, a US$70 fee for changes within 30 days of your appointment, a new fee for a second or third attempt, and a renewal fee every three years.

Price shown on PMI's CAPM page, checked October 27, 2026Amount (US dollars)
Member price$225
Full price$300

PMI's CAPM page listed both prices in US dollars when Passy checked it on October 27, 2026. The PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026) says prices may vary by membership status and regional location, so the amount at checkout in your country can differ. Confirm it in your PMI account before you pay.

Three PMI rules decide what you actually pay:

  • You pay after acceptance. The CAPM page says the exam fee is only required after your application has been accepted and you are ready to schedule.
  • Membership must come first. The CAPM Examination Content Outline says the member rate applies only if you are a member in good standing when you pay. If your membership is still processing, you are charged the full price, and PMI won't refund the difference if you join afterward.
  • One fee covers the first attempt. The handbook says you pay again for the second and third attempts.

Because a second attempt means paying again, it helps to know where you stand well before test day, and planned CAPM prep tracks your accuracy in each of the four domains so a weak area shows up early.

Does PMI membership pay for itself on the CAPM fee?

The gap between the two prices is $75 ($300 minus $225). That gives a simple rule:

  • If joining PMI costs you less than $75 in total, including any one-time fee, membership pays for itself on the exam fee alone.
  • If it costs more, it can still make sense for other reasons, but not on the exam fee by itself.

Dues vary by membership type and region, so check the current amount, including any one-time fee, when you join through PMI's membership page. The same page offers a free 30-day trial membership, but it lists member pricing on certifications only under paid Professional Membership, so don't count on a trial for the $225 rate. That page also says full-time college or university students can join at a "deeply discounted rate," which is worth checking if you're a student. PMI's CAPM page also lists the PMBOK Guide as free for members, and the membership page says members get digital editions of PMI standards free. If you plan to buy the PMBOK Guide anyway, count that in.

Whatever you decide, join and wait for confirmation before you pay for the exam.

CAPM costs beyond the exam fee

CostWhat PMI saysAmount
23 hours of project management educationRequired before the exam; many provider types countVaries by provider. Employer programs or past university courses may already cover it
Rescheduling or canceling within 30 days of your appointmentCharged by the exam vendor when you make the changeUS$70 plus taxes
Missing the 48-hour cutoff or not showing upYou can't change the appointment inside 48 hours; a no-show forfeits the feeThe full exam fee
Second or third attemptYou pay again; the outline says a retake within your eligibility period is discounted, subject to regional and membership pricingNot listed on the public PMI pages checked; confirm in your PMI account
Manual rescore of a paper-based examOnly for paper-based administrationsUS$45
Refund after failing the online pre-scheduling identity checkIf you ask for a refund instead of booking a test center, PMI deducts a fee$100 administrative fee
Renewal every three yearsPaid after you report 15 PDUs; set by membership and regionShown in your myPMI dashboard

The handbook's 30-day window doesn't count the day of the exam. Its own example: for an exam on May 5, change or cancel on or before April 4 to avoid the fee.

If your score is invalidated or canceled on statistical evidence alone, the outline says you're entitled to a free retake, though PMI may restrict the date, time or place.

Accommodations don't add cost: the handbook says there are no additional fees for them.

CAPM refunds and the deadlines that cost money

The handbook's refund policy is narrow:

  • Within 30 days of purchase. You can request a refund if you don't schedule and take the exam in that period. Once it is processed, your application closes and your eligibility period ends.
  • Eligibility year expires unscheduled. No refund. You forfeit the whole fee and must pay again if you reapply.
  • Scheduled but missed without notice. No refund.

For emergencies, the handbook's extenuating circumstances policy covers medical emergencies, military deployment, a death or illness in the immediate family, natural disasters and force majeure. Work-related reasons don't qualify. If one of these makes you miss the exam, contact PMI within 72 hours with documentation. For a late change, you pay the US$70 when you reschedule and can then ask PMI Customer Care to refund it, which PMI decides case by case.

A worked CAPM budget

A fictional candidate, Jordan, is not a PMI member and takes the 23 hours through an employer program at no personal cost. Here is how three outcomes compare, using only the fees above:

ScenarioExam feesLate-change feesTotal paid to PMI and its vendor
Passes on the first attempt, books well ahead$300$0$300
Moves the appointment 20 days before the exam, then passes$300$70 + taxes$370 + taxes
Fails once, then passes$300 + retake fee$0$300 + retake fee

The retake fee isn't on PMI's public pages, so the third row can't be completed without logging in. As a member, Jordan's first row would be $225 plus dues. The cheapest outcome is the obvious one: book far enough ahead that you won't need a late change, and walk in ready. That is the case for planning your study backward from the exam date, which the CAPM study time guide does week by week, and for one full-length rehearsal: full CAPM prep planned for launch includes a 150-question, 3-hour timed mock exam.

Keeping CAPM costs down

  • Book with a 30-day buffer in mind. Decide whether you're ready at least 31 days out, while changes are still free.
  • Check whether past training counts. PMI says to record education hours regardless of when you earned them, so earlier courses may cover the 23 hours. The CAPM requirements guide lists the provider types.
  • Do the membership math before paying. It's a $75 question.
  • Practice before you pay for a retake. If an attempt doesn't go your way, the CAPM passing score and results guide explains how to read your domain ratings, and the free CAPM retake planner builds a plan around them.

Exam prep is a separate cost from PMI's fees. If you're comparing options, you can compare the planned 30-, 90- and 180-day CAPM prep periods and their one-time prices; checkout isn't open yet, so nothing can be bought today.

Meanwhile, the free tools already work: 20 CAPM practice questions with explanations, and a CAPM study planner weighted by the four domains.
