CAPM Requirements and How to Apply: The 23 Hours, the Audit and Your Eligibility ID
The CAPM needs a secondary degree, an age of 18 and 23 hours of project management education, with no experience. Here is what counts toward the 23 hours, what an audit asks for, and each step from application to a booked exam.
Short answer
To apply for the CAPM, you need a secondary degree such as a high school diploma or GED, to be at least 18, and 23 hours of project management education completed before your exam. No project experience is required. You apply online through PMI; the outline says registrations are processed in 24 hours or less unless your application is picked for audit. Once approved, you pay the fee, receive a PMI Eligibility ID by email, and have one year and up to three attempts to pass.
You can apply for the CAPM if you have a secondary degree (a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent), are at least 18, and complete 23 hours of project management education before your exam. That is the whole list: PMI asks for no project experience. You apply online at PMI.org, PMI reviews the application and may audit it, and once it is approved you pay, receive a PMI Eligibility ID, and book your exam with Pearson VUE within a one-year eligibility period.
The three CAPM eligibility requirements
PMI's CAPM page and the CAPM Examination Content Outline (2023 Exam Update) set the requirements, as checked on October 27, 2026:
| Requirement | Rule | Where PMI states it |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary education | High school diploma, GED or global equivalent | CAPM page and outline |
| Age | At least 18 years old | CAPM page |
| Project management education | 23 hours, completed by the time of your exam | CAPM page and outline |
PMI's current outline and CAPM page list no experience route: education is the only way to qualify. A higher degree is fine but changes nothing, since the CAPM has a single tier. Because no experience is needed, many candidates meet the vocabulary for the first time. Explanations matter most at that stage, and full CAPM prep planned for launch explains every answer, right or wrong.
What counts toward the CAPM's 23 hours
The outline says the hours must be "specific instruction that addressed learning objectives in project management." Course content can include project quality, scope, time, cost, resources, communications, risk, procurement, integration management, agile and business analysis.
You can complete self-study guides, courses, workshops or training sessions offered by any of these provider types:
- PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs). PMI's CAPM Exam Prep page says ATP training fulfills the 23 hours and aligns with the outline
- PMI's own on-demand course. PMI's CAPM Exam Prep Course is listed at 23 hours and 23 PDUs, and PMI says it fulfills the requirement
- PMI chapters. Chapter courses count. Chapter meetings do not, except for any hour of a meeting spent on a learning activity
- Employer or company-sponsored programs
- Training companies or consultants, such as training schools
- Distance-learning companies, provided the course includes an end-of-course assessment
- University or college programs, both academic and continuing education
Two practical consequences follow from PMI's wording. First, the outline tells you to record your education hours "regardless of when they were accrued," so a project management course from an earlier degree can still count. Second, the education has to come from one of those providers. Reading a book on your own isn't on PMI's list, and a free video series with no completion record or assessment may be hard to document if you are audited.
Practice tools are not education hours either. Question banks, including the planned full CAPM prep with 2,200 practice questions, help you prepare for the exam, but they are not the project management instruction PMI asks you to record.
Can you apply for the CAPM before finishing the 23 hours?
PMI's wording ties the deadline to the exam: the outline says the coursework "must be completed at the time of your examination," and the CAPM page says "completed before the exam." But the application asks you to enter your education courses, and if PMI audits you, it asks for a certificate or letter for each course you listed, before you can pay. A practical approach is to finish the hours, and collect the certificates, before you submit.
How to apply for the CAPM, step by step
- Create a PMI.org account. PMI's CAPM page says to register an account before starting the application.
- Fill in the online application. It is save-as-you-go, so you can stop and return. Enter your academic education and your 23 hours of project management education. You don't upload documents at this stage, according to PMI's certification FAQ.
- Submit and wait for review. The outline says registrations are processed in 24 hours or less, unless your application is selected for audit.
- Complete the audit if you are selected. See the next section.
- Pay the exam fee. PMI's CAPM page says the fee is only required after your application is accepted. Member pricing applies only if your PMI membership is active before you pay. The CAPM exam cost guide covers the amounts and the membership math.
- Receive your PMI Eligibility ID. The handbook says PMI emails it after payment, and you need it to schedule. Keep it, along with every scheduling confirmation.
- Schedule with Pearson VUE. PMI's FAQ says the email links you to book at a test center (which PMI recommends) or online with a remote proctor. The CAPM exam format guide compares the two.
The handbook adds a name rule worth checking at step 6. Your eligibility letter shows your name as it will appear on exam day, and it must match your government-issued ID exactly. If it doesn't, contact PMI as soon as possible: PMI says it can't guarantee a change within 5 business days of a scheduled exam.
The CAPM audit: what PMI asks for
The PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026) says all applications are subject to audit, a percentage are selected at random, and PMI can audit anyone at any time, including after certification. If you are selected, you are told by email before you pay.
| Audit detail | PMI's rule |
|---|---|
| Deadline | 90 days to submit the audit package |
| What to send for the CAPM | A copy of your diploma or degree (PMI's FAQ says a school transcript is accepted) and a certificate or letter from the provider for each course you listed |
| Course without a certificate | An in-house course can be verified by a letter of completion on company letterhead from the course administrator, HR or a manager |
| Not accepted | A receipt or a course roster |
| Foreign-language certificates | Upload the original plus a letter with a general translation |
| Review time | About 5 to 7 business days after you submit a complete package |
| How you submit | Through the audit package in your myPMI dashboard |
The handbook's audit list also mentions supervisor signatures for professional experience. That item applies to certifications with an experience requirement; the CAPM application records none.
If you don't complete the audit, or choose not to, the handbook says you fail it and face a one-year suspension before you can reapply. PMI's FAQ says the materials are confidential. Once PMI approves the audit, it emails your payment instructions.
When the CAPM eligibility year starts and ends
The handbook says you have one year from approval to take the exam, with up to three attempts in that year. If you were audited, the year starts on the day PMI tells you the audit was successful.
Two endings to avoid:
- The year runs out before you pass. You must reapply to try again.
- The year runs out before you even schedule. The handbook says you forfeit the entire fee and get no refund.
A year is plenty of time for most study plans, but the clock runs whether you study or not. The free CAPM study planner turns your exam date and daily study time into a plan weighted by the four domains, and you can weigh the planned 30-, 90- and 180-day access lengths against the exam date you book, keeping in mind that checkout isn't open yet.
Before you submit your CAPM application
Check three things: your secondary diploma or transcript is easy to find, each course you'll list has a certificate or letter showing your name and the hours, and the name on your PMI account matches your ID. With those ready, an audit becomes a short upload rather than a scramble.
