CAPM Exam Format: 150 Questions, 3 Hours, a One-Way Break and Six Question Styles

The CAPM has 150 questions in 3 hours, 15 of them unscored, with a 10-minute break after question 75 that locks the first half. Here is the pacing math, what each question style asks you to do, and how test-center and online delivery differ.

Short answer

The CAPM has 150 questions in 3 hours: 135 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions, mixed in at random. After you finish questions 1 to 75 and review your answers, you get a 10-minute break, and once it starts you can't return to the first 75. Questions include multiple choice, drag-and-drop matching, hot spots, and animations or comic strips, and online testers see comic strips only. An optional tutorial and survey don't count against the 3 hours.

The CAPM exam at a glance

PMI's CAPM Examination Content Outline (2023 Exam Update) and CAPM page give these numbers, as checked on October 27, 2026:

FeatureCAPM rule
Questions150 in total: 135 scored, 15 unscored pretest
Pretest placementAt random, mixed in with scored questions
Exam time3 hours (180 minutes)
BreakOne 10-minute break after question 75
Before and afterAn optional tutorial and an optional survey, together 5 to 15 minutes, not counted in the 3 hours
DomainsFundamentals 36%, Predictive 17%, Agile 20%, Business Analysis 27%
DeliveryPearson VUE test center (PMI recommends it) or online with a remote proctor

You can't tell which questions are the 15 pretest items, so treat every question as if it counts. PMI uses pretest questions to check the validity of future items, and they don't affect your score.

The CAPM break after question 75 is one-way

The outline describes the break precisely: it appears after you complete questions 1 to 75 and after you have reviewed your answers. Once you review your responses and start the break, you can't go back to anything in the first section.

That rule changes how you should work the first half:

  • Finish your flagged questions before the break. Anything marked for review in questions 1 to 75 has to be settled before you start the break.
  • Don't save hard questions for "later" across the line. Later only exists within the same half.
  • Use the break. It is a chance to reset, and the second half carries the same weight as the first.

Neither the outline nor PMI's handbook says whether the 10 minutes come out of your 3 hours. The cautious plan is to pace so you would finish even if they did: 170 minutes for 150 questions is about 68 seconds each, and the exam's on-screen clock shows what is left.

Pacing the CAPM: about 72 seconds a question

The arithmetic is Passy's:

CheckpointTime used if you pace evenly
Question 2530 minutes
Question 5060 minutes
Question 75, before the break90 minutes
Question 100120 minutes
Question 125150 minutes
Question 150180 minutes

180 minutes divided by 150 questions is 1.2 minutes, or 72 seconds, per question. Animations and longer scenarios take more than that, short definition questions less, so the checkpoints matter more than any single question. Because PMI doesn't say whether the break uses exam time, stay a little ahead of these checkpoints: reaching question 75 by about 85 minutes and question 150 by about 170 keeps you on time even if the break does count.

Pacing is easier to judge after a full-length rehearsal, and you can rehearse the 150-question, 3-hour format with the timed mock exam planned for full CAPM prep.

The six CAPM question styles

The outline lists multiple choice, drag-and-drop, animations and comic strips, and says "you may also see hot spot questions." PMI's own five-question sample set adds a style the list doesn't name separately: a multiple-choice item that asks you to choose two answers. The descriptions below paraphrase PMI's.

StyleWhat you do
Multiple choicePick one answer from the options
Choose two (multiple response)Pick the number of answers the question asks for, as in PMI's sample set
Drag-and-drop (enhanced matching)Read a scenario, then drag each box from one column onto the matching box in the other
Hot spot or hot areaRead a short scenario and click the right area of an image
Animation videoWatch a video with audio and closed captions, as many times as you like, then answer one multiple-choice question
Comic stripRead a comic strip, scrolling if needed, then answer one multiple-choice question

Each animation or comic strip comes with exactly one question. At a test center you get headphones for the animations. Online testers see comic strips only, which the outline says avoids sound issues. PMI also says the exact number of items of each type, and of each approach, can vary from one exam form to the next.

How the four CAPM domains translate into questions

PMI applies its percentages at the domain level. Applied to the 135 scored questions, they work out roughly like this; the rounding is Passy's, and the 15 pretest items can come from any domain:

DomainWeightAbout this many scored questions
Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts36%49
Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies17%23
Agile Frameworks/Methodologies20%27
Business Analysis Frameworks27%36

The outline adds that every exam includes all tasks for a domain, and that predictive, adaptive and business analysis approaches show up across all four domains, not only in their own. A fundamentals question can be set in an agile team, for example. The CAPM business analysis guide covers the 27% domain in depth, and you can see how planned CAPM prep splits its 2,200 questions across these four domains.

CAPM at a test center vs online

DetailPearson VUE test centerOnline (OnVUE)
Video itemsAnimations, with headphones providedComic strips only
NotesA booklet of scratch paper and two pencils, or two erasable boards and markers, depending on the centerA digital whiteboard on screen; Pearson VUE says physical whiteboards and writing materials aren't allowed
CalculatorBuilt into the computer-based exam, and you can ask for a handheld oneThe handbook says calculators are built into the computer-based exam; it describes handheld calculators only for test centers
ArrivalCheck in 30 minutes early; late arrivals can't testBegin check-in 30 minutes before the appointment
RoomLocker for belongings; only your ID and locker key stay with youAlone in a private space (no public spaces or bathrooms), one screen, no phone, watch or headphones

Both modes need a valid, unexpired government-issued ID with your photo and signature, and the name must match your booking exactly. PMI's handbook adds two limits on online testing: if you need accommodations, you may not be eligible for an online exam, and online testing isn't available to citizens of the People's Republic of China, Macau and Hong Kong, wherever they test, and mainland China uses paper-based testing only. Paper-based results arrive in 6 to 8 weeks rather than at the end of the session.

Languages and the English button on the CAPM

The CAPM page lists the exam in English, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, although the same page elsewhere says "Offered in 8 languages." That figure matches PMI's 2023 Exam Update FAQ, which named eight translations at launch; the page's longer list adds Korean and Traditional Chinese. Check the language list when you schedule. The handbook says a translated computer exam has an exhibit button that shows each question in English, and that PMI can't change the language of an existing appointment: you would have to cancel it first, then ask PMI for the other language.

What to do with the CAPM format before exam day

See the styles before you meet them under time pressure. PMI's five sample CAPM questions include a choose-two item. Passy's 20 free CAPM practice questions are single-answer items covering all four domains, with explanations, and the CAPM study time guide schedules a full timed run in the last weeks. The CAPM passing score and results guide explains what you'll see when you finish. For the last few days, a Test Day checklist is planned as part of full CAPM prep, alongside the timed mock exam.
