The NHA CCMA Exam in 2027: Which Test Plan, Rules and Dates Apply to a 2027 Test Date
Testing for the NHA CCMA in 2027? As of October 28, 2026, NHA has announced no new CCMA exam, so the test plan used since January 10, 2024 applies. Here is what is confirmed for a 2027 date, how NHA announces changes and how much notice it has given, and the rules and deadlines that cross into 2027.
Short answer
As of October 28, 2026, a 2027 test date falls under the current NHA CCMA exam: the test plan based on NHA's 2022 job analysis, used since January 10, 2024, with 150 scored and 30 pretest questions in 3 hours across seven domains, and a scaled passing score of 390 on 200 to 500. NHA's update page lists no new CCMA exam. NHA says new test plans usually appear 9 months to a year before a new exam, and from launch day only the new version is offered, so check NHA's update page before you book and again before you test.
Nothing NHA has published changes the CCMA exam in 2027. As of October 28, 2026, NHA's Product & Cert Portal Updates page, where NHA announces new exams and study materials, lists no new CCMA exam, and the CCMA test plan NHA links for the exam is still the one "Based on The Results of a Job Analysis Completed in 2022." So the planning question for a 2027 date isn't which version, but which rules and deadlines from late 2026 carry into your timeline.
What is confirmed for a 2027 CCMA test date
As checked on October 28, 2026. "Confirmed" here means it is current and no change has been announced, not that NHA has promised it for all of 2027.
| Item | Current rule | Where NHA says it |
|---|---|---|
| Exam version | Test plan based on the 2022 job analysis, in use since January 10, 2024 | Test plan; NHA's CCMA 3.0 announcement |
| Questions and time | 150 scored + 30 pretest items, 3 hours | Test plan |
| Domains | Seven: Clinical Patient Care 84, Foundational Knowledge 15, three domains of 12, Anatomy and Physiology 8, Medical Law and Ethics 7 | Test plan |
| Passing score | Scaled 390 on a 200 to 500 scale | Candidate Handbook, updated 10/05/2026 |
| Tools | Built-in calculator; scratch paper at schools; whiteboards at PSI centers and on screen for remote exams | Handbook; Product & Cert Portal Updates (June 2026) |
| Retakes | 30-day wait, three attempts, then a one-year wait; full price each time | Handbook |
| Provisional certification | For exams passed on or after October 1, 2026: test no more than 18 months before graduating; expires 18 months after the exam date | Product & Cert Portal Updates (October 2026) and NHA's FAQ on the change; handbook pp. 10–11 and 38 |
| Renewal | Every two years, 10 CE credits; $195, or no extra renewal cost while NHA One's $95 yearly payments are current | Renewal page; NHA One article |
Two passages of the same handbook (pp. 35 and 37) still say a provisional certification lasts 12 months or one year; NHA's dated announcement and the handbook's provisional sections say 18 months for exams passed from October 1, 2026, so check the expiration date in your NHA account after you pass. The exam fee isn't in the table because Passy couldn't confirm the current fee on an NHA page; NHA shows it in its shop at application, and the CCMA cost guide explains what's known.
How NHA announces a new CCMA exam
NHA describes its process in its Help Center:
- Notice. New test plans and crosswalks are typically published "9 months to 1 year prior to the new exam launches," and new study materials 3 to 4 months before
- Launch day. On and after the launch date, "only the updated version will be available"
- No retake grace period. Candidates who fail shortly before a launch and retest afterward "will test on the new exam"
- Size of change. After a job task analysis, NHA's exams are "typically updated with minimal impact to domains and content areas"
NHA's recent launches show the pattern in dates:
| Exam | New study materials | New exam |
|---|---|---|
| CCMA (current version) | August 10, 2023 | January 10, 2024 |
| ExCPT (pharmacy technician) | March 12, 2025 | July 9, 2025 |
| CPT (phlebotomy technician) | October 8, 2025 | January 7, 2026 |
| CPCT/A (patient care technician) | October 7, 2026 | January 13, 2027 |
The CCMA's own history gave candidates more notice than that. NHA's 2016-to-2022 CCMA crosswalk, the document that maps the old test plan onto the current one, was already online in May 2022 according to the Internet Archive's copy, about 20 months before the January 10, 2024 launch, and NHA's post giving the launch date is dated May 2023, seven to eight months before it (Passy's arithmetic). NHA calls its timeline typical, not guaranteed, so keep checking. The CPCT/A launch on January 13, 2027 is a different NHA exam; it doesn't change the CCMA.
What would change if NHA announced a new CCMA
If a new CCMA is announced before your date, three things follow from NHA's own statements:
- A new test plan and crosswalk would show what changed between versions, months ahead of launch
- New study materials would arrive a few months before the exam, so prep bought before then may be the older version
- The launch date becomes your dividing line. Test before it and you take the current exam; test on or after it, including any retake, and you take the new one
NHA's last CCMA update was described as having "minimal impact to exam topics and content areas," but the domain counts still moved, compared with the older 2016-based summary. Study from whichever plan your test date falls under. Today that is the 2022-based plan, and planned CCMA prep is built on the test plan used since January 10, 2024.
Deadlines that cross into 2027
Even without a new exam, several rules connect a late-2026 decision to a 2027 date. Each comes from the handbook or NHA's Help Center; the examples are Passy's arithmetic.
- The five-year training window. Pathway 1 requires a training program completed within the past five years, and the handbook measures it to your registration date: a completion "five years or more prior to the date of registration" means you need the work-experience pathway instead. If you finished a program in 2022 and plan to register in 2027, check the exact dates. The CCMA eligibility guide has both pathways
- The six-month PSI window. NHA gives six months from your application date to schedule and take a PSI or remote exam. An application in November 2026 means testing by about May 2027
- The 8-day school deadline. For school-scheduled exams, NHA requires the application at least 8 days before the exam date and, since January 1, 2026, can't accommodate later requests
- Retakes over New Year. A failed attempt in late December 2026 means the earliest retake is 30 days later, in late January 2027; the CCMA retake guide has a dated example
- High school class of 2027. For exams passed from October 1, 2026, students can test no more than 18 months before graduation, so a June 2027 graduate is already inside that window, and the provisional certification lasts 18 months from the exam date; the class of 2027 guide works through the dates
- Renewing in 2027. A CCMA earned in 2025 expires in 2027, two years after certification, and renewal needs 10 continuing education credits
If your 2027 date is far away
A test date late in 2027 leaves time for NHA to announce something, so plan in two stages. Learn the foundations now (terminology, anatomy, pharmacology basics, infection control, medical math); NHA describes its updates as typically having minimal impact on domains and content areas, so that study stays useful either way. Save the timed, domain-weighted practice for the final two months, after one last check of NHA's update page. For a long runway, the 180-day CCMA access period planned for launch leaves room if your date moves.
Don't confuse the CCMA with the CMA's 2027 change
One medical assistant exam does change in 2027, and it isn't NHA's. The AAMA's certification page says a new content outline applies to CMA (AAMA) exam dates on or after July 2027, and the previous outline applies before that. That affects only the CMA (AAMA), a separate credential with its own 200-question exam. If your program or employer asks for "a medical assistant certification," check which one before you plan around a 2027 change.
Planning a 2027 CCMA test date
A sequence in Passy's words, for a date anywhere in 2027:
- Now: confirm your pathway and, if you trained in 2022, the five-year date, and download the current test plan
- Before you apply: check the Product & Cert Portal Updates page and the handbook's "Updated" date for anything new about the CCMA
- When you apply: pick a test month inside your six-month window, and check the fee at checkout
- Six to eight weeks out: study by domain weight, as the CCMA study plan guide lays out
- Two weeks out: check the update page once more, and confirm your ID and test-day setup
When the date is close, practice should follow the plan's weights, and planned CCMA practice gives Clinical Patient Care the same 56% share the test plan does.
