CCMA vs CMAA: NHA's Clinical and Administrative Medical Assistant Exams Compared
NHA's CCMA covers clinical care plus a share of front-office work; its CMAA is administrative only. Here is how the two test plans overlap, how eligibility, pass rates and renewal compare, and when holding both makes sense.
Short answer
Choose the CCMA if you want clinical work such as vital signs, injections, phlebotomy and EKGs: 84 of its 150 scored questions are clinical, and the rest cover basic science, anatomy, care coordination, front-office tasks, communication and law. The CMAA is NHA's administrative exam, with 110 scored questions on scheduling, check-in, billing, records and compliance and no clinical domain. Eligibility works the same way for both. If you hold both, one set of 10 continuing education credits counts toward both renewals, though NHA charges a separate fee for stacked certifications.
NHA offers two medical assistant certifications, and their names make them easy to confuse. The CCMA is the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant; the CMAA is the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant. Both come from the National Healthcareer Association, both use the same eligibility steps and the same 390 passing score, and both renew every two years. The difference is the job each one tests, and that shows up clearly in the two test plans.

The CMAA test plan file is dated "Rev01222022." NHA's Product & Cert Portal Updates page lists no new CCMA or CMAA exam as of October 28, 2026.
How the CCMA and CMAA test plans overlap
The CCMA isn't purely clinical. Its Administrative Assisting domain lists many of the same tasks as the CMAA: scheduling, verifying insurance, checking patients in and out, prior authorizations, charge reconciliation and billing. The difference is depth. Side by side (question counts from the two plans, totals by Passy):
| Area | CCMA scored questions | CMAA scored questions |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical patient care (intake and vitals, procedures, infection control, lab testing, phlebotomy, EKG) | 84 | 0 |
| Front office: scheduling, check-in and check-out, billing, records and office procedures | 12 (Administrative Assisting) | 62 (Scheduling 16, Patient Encounter 21, Billing and Revenue Cycle 11, Administrative Procedures and Logistics 14) |
| Communication | 12 | 21 (with professionalism) |
| Law and ethics | 7 | 17 (with compliance) |
| Foundations: terminology, science, anatomy | 23 (Foundational Knowledge and Basic Science 15, Anatomy and Physiology 8) | 10 (Foundational Knowledge) |
| Care coordination and patient education | 12 | No separate domain; tasks such as pre- and post-test instructions sit under Communication and Professionalism |
Read it this way: more than half of the CMAA is front-office procedure that the CCMA tests in 12 questions. A CCMA candidate meets topics like prior authorization and charge reconciliation inside a 12-question domain; a CMAA candidate meets them across 62 questions, in more detail. If you're weighing the CCMA because the clinical work interests you, planned CCMA practice gives Clinical Patient Care 378 of its 675 questions.
Eligibility for the CCMA and the CMAA
The handbook applies the same two steps to both exams: a high school diploma or equivalent, then one pathway, either a training program in the field the exam covers (completed within the last five years, including apprenticeships, military training and approved employer or pre-externship routes) or supervised work experience in that field (one year in the last three, or two in the last five).
Three differences in practice:
- The field must match. Work experience counts only "in the health field covered by the NHA certification exam," so front-desk experience points to the CMAA and clinical medical assisting experience to the CCMA
- California's extra rule is CCMA-only. California residents applying for the CCMA on work experience need two years as a medical assistant in the last five; the handbook sets no such rule for the CMAA
- Provisional certification works the same way. NHA's provisional FAQ lists both the CCMA and the CMAA among the certifications whose provisional period grew from 12 to 18 months on October 1, 2026
The details of every route are in the CCMA eligibility guide.
What the CCMA and CMAA pass rates say
In 2025, 81.73% of CCMA exams passed and 63.24% of CMAA exams did. That gap is real in NHA's numbers, but it doesn't mean the CMAA is the harder exam for you. The two exams test different content, draw different candidates (the CCMA had about nine times as many exams), and NHA's reports count all examinations administered in the year without separating first attempts from retakes. They don't report results by school or pathway, so there's no way to tell from them why the rates differ. The guide to how hard the CCMA is explains the limits of these figures.
Holding both CCMA and CMAA: stacking and renewal
NHA's renewal page is built for people with more than one certification: "The 10 credits apply toward one or more certifications," so three certifications still need a total of 10 credits per cycle. It also says "there is a separate fee for stacked certifications," without listing the amount, so check it in your account before you add a second credential. The 2027 renewal guide covers the cycle itself.
One practical sequence (Passy's suggestion) is the CCMA first, since it covers the clinical work and a slice of the front office, then the CMAA later if a role leans administrative. Each exam is a separate registration and fee, and NHA's retake rules apply to each exam separately: a 30-day wait and three attempts before a one-year wait.
Where the CCMA vs CMAA choice matters outside NHA
State rules can make the decision for you. In Washington, anyone performing the clinical duties listed in state law needs a Department of Health medical assistant credential, according to the Department's FAQ. For the medical assistant-certified credential, the recognized exams list includes NHA's clinical medical assistant exam; the CMAA isn't on it. Other states have their own rules, covered in the CCMA state requirements guide.
Choosing between the CCMA and the CMAA
- You want to room patients, take vitals, give injections or draw blood: the CCMA
- You want the front desk, scheduling, insurance and billing, with no clinical tasks: the CMAA
- You're in a medical assistant program: ask which NHA exam it prepares you for and whether the exam fee is included
- You're unsure: look at what local medical assistant job postings ask for, and remember the CCMA already includes 12 administrative questions
If the CCMA is your choice, a 180-question CCMA mock exam is planned to rehearse the full 3 hours.
