CEH Online or at a Test Center: How to Choose and Prepare
Compare EC-Council remote proctoring with a Pearson VUE test center, choose the matching CEH voucher, and check the requirements before booking.
Short answer
You can take the CEH knowledge exam online through EC-Council's remote proctoring service or in person at a Pearson VUE test center. The routes use different vouchers, and an unused-voucher request to change modes is discretionary rather than a guaranteed exchange. Choose after confirming the remote setup requirements or the available center appointment, then purchase the voucher for that route.
Can you take CEH online?
Yes. EC-Council offers the CEH knowledge exam through its remote proctoring service, while its Pearson VUE voucher is for testing in person at a center. The two official voucher listings, checked November 3, 2026, identify separate delivery routes, so choose the route before purchasing.
The online route is EC-Council RPS. Do not assume that a Pearson VUE voucher gives you access to Pearson's online testing service: the CEH product listing specifies physical attendance at the venue.
EC-Council lists the knowledge exam as 125 multiple-choice questions in four hours. It is not open book. Those facts help you plan preparation, but they do not establish the technical requirements, identification rules, or break arrangements for your particular appointment. Start by deciding which setting you can reliably prepare for, then obtain that route's current instructions.
What differs between RPS and a Pearson VUE test center?
The main differences are the delivery setting, voucher, and arrangements you need to confirm. Current listed voucher prices were checked November 3, 2026:
| Decision point | EC-Council RPS | Pearson VUE test center |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Online, remotely proctored by the RPS team | In person, with a proctor at the venue |
| Voucher listing | CEH Exam Voucher – RPS | CEH Exam Voucher – Pearson VUE |
| Listed voucher price | US$950 | US$1,199 |
| Your planning task | Confirm the current device, connection, room, and check-in instructions | Confirm the location, available appointment, travel, and check-in instructions |
The listed difference is $249, calculated as $1,199 minus $950. These are voucher prices, not complete training budgets. Recheck the current listings before payment; if a training package supplies your voucher, confirm which delivery route it covers.
Use this practical decision rule: favor RPS if you can confirm that your intended setup meets the current requirements and remote testing suits you. Favor a center if a suitable appointment and journey are manageable and you prefer testing at a venue. If an important condition is unresolved, investigate it before buying either voucher.
Your content preparation still needs to cover the knowledge exam. The CEH blueprint guide explains the content map, and full CEH prep planned for launch is organized across nine domains.
Which voucher matches your chosen mode?
Match the voucher to the delivery description, not just the letters CEH in its title. Use this order:
- Check your eligibility route. The official-training route requires the attendance documentation specified by EC-Council. Self-study candidates need eligibility approval before buying the exam voucher. The CEH cost and eligibility guide explains the two routes.
- Check any included voucher. If you bought a training package, establish whether it already supplies a voucher and whether that voucher matches your intended mode.
- Match the product to the setting. Choose the RPS listing for EC-Council remote delivery or the Pearson VUE listing for physical attendance at a test center.
- Follow the instructions for that route. Save the voucher details and appointment confirmation together so you can check that the intended mode is consistent throughout.
For example, if you decide to test remotely but your package supplies a center voucher, resolve that mismatch before attempting to book. Do not buy a second voucher simply because the first booking route seems wrong; ask the supplier or EC-Council to identify what you have.
The CEH registration and booking timeline covers approval and appointment sequencing. Keep your preparation adjustable with the free CEH study plan while you confirm the delivery arrangements.
What should you check before a remote session?
EC-Council's ECC Exam Center & Remote Proctoring Services User Guide, checked November 5, 2026, supplies a checklist for knowledge-exam RPS sessions. It is separate from CEH Practical guidance and does not establish Pearson OnVUE rules. The public PDF contains dated technical tables, so obtain the current CEH requirements through the official guide directory or EC-Council before relying on a device or buying equipment.
Pages 24–26 of the RPS guide establish these preparation steps:
- Test your equipment. Complete the directed equipment test using your intended setup. The guide calls for a desktop or laptop and one monitor; confirm current operating-system, software and connection requirements separately.
- Prepare your identification. Have accepted government-issued photo identification available. Confirm exactly which document is accepted for your appointment; the checklist here does not establish a document count or name-matching policy.
- Arrange camera visibility. The proctor needs continuous visibility of you and the exam. Prepare for the required room scan and follow the proctor's setup instructions.
- Clear the testing space. Keep other people out and remove accessible books, calculators and notes. Check your appointment instructions for any other restricted belongings.
If you intend to use an employer-managed computer, confirm that you can complete the required setup and equipment test first. An ordinary video call does not verify exam compatibility. Page 18 recommends scheduling RPS at least 72 hours, or three days, ahead; this is a recommendation, not a universal mandatory deadline or a guarantee of availability.
Can you take breaks during RPS?
Resolve this before starting. The public guide states that breaks are not allowed, but page 25 also says permitted breaks will be explained at launch. Because those instructions conflict, ask EC-Council to confirm the rules for your CEH appointment and any approved accommodation. Do not leave the proctor's view without permission or assume that the exam clock will pause.
If you need accommodations, use the CEH accommodations guide to arrange the request and obtain approval before relying on extra breaks or other changes.
What if the connection or equipment fails?
Page 11 describes a support process rather than an automatic free resit:
- Notify the proctor. The proctor troubleshoots the problem and creates a case if it cannot be resolved. Keep the support contact instructions available before the session starts.
- Confirm which process applies. An unresolved problem before the exam starts may lead to rescheduling or cancellation, with voucher reinstatement where applicable. For a failure during the exam, the guide describes a replacement-voucher process; support must confirm the resolution for your case.
- Retain the case record. Obtain the provider's decision and instructions before assuming that another appointment or voucher is available.
For content practice, start with the 20 free CEH practice questions. For a longer preparation exercise, full CEH prep planned for launch includes a 125-question mock. Keep any practice session separate from the provider's technical checks: solving questions does not validate your testing setup.
What should you confirm for a test-center visit?
Pearson VUE's EC-Council exam page says you need an eligibility number to schedule and sit the exam. Appointments are subject to availability. These requirements were checked November 3, 2026; use the current page and your confirmation when booking.
Before booking a center, confirm the exact address, appointment date and time, accepted identification, check-in instructions, permitted breaks, and arrangements for belongings. The RPS checklist above does not establish Pearson center rules. Plan the journey using that address. If you need accommodations, use the CEH accommodations guide and confirm the approved arrangements before relying on a particular appointment.
For either delivery route, confirm the rescheduling, cancellation and no-show terms before booking. Pearson provides appointment-management links, but those links alone do not establish a universal deadline or fee. Read the terms attached to your appointment and resolve uncertainty before changing it. Extending a voucher is a separate issue from changing an appointment; use the CEH voucher expiration and extension guide if the voucher itself may expire.
A useful final check is to place your eligibility details, voucher, appointment confirmation, and provider instructions together. If the mode, venue, or date differs between them, resolve it before exam day.
Can you switch delivery modes after purchase?
Do not count on an automatic switch. EC-Council's FAQ distinguishes remote vouchers from physical-center vouchers and describes an unused-voucher mode-change request as discretionary. It may involve $100, according to the FAQ checked November 3, 2026; that figure is not a guaranteed exchange price or approval.
If you need to change, ask EC-Council to confirm whether your specific unused voucher qualifies, what payment would apply, and how an existing appointment should be handled. Include the current mode and intended mode in your request. Wait for a clear resolution before assuming that a different booking channel will accept the voucher.
Continue content review while the delivery question is resolved. For short recall sessions, full CEH prep planned for launch includes 500 flashcards.
Your next step is to write down three things: the delivery route you want, the voucher you have or need, and any requirement you have not yet confirmed. Resolve the open requirement with the appropriate provider, then book an available appointment using the matching instructions.
