How Long Should You Study for Security+?

Security+ study time depends on the networking you already have. These three schedules are illustrations, not a required number of weeks.

Short answer

There is no official number of weeks. CompTIA has suggested about 30 to 40 hours of study and recommends Network+ plus two years in a security or systems role, without making either a prerequisite. A person who already works with networks may finish in a few focused weeks. A newcomer who still needs protocol basics needs longer. Use your test date and daily minutes, not a universal calendar.

Hours are an assumption, not a rule

CompTIA’s own FAQ suggests dedicating about 30 to 40 hours before you sit Security+. That sentence does not know your job, your reading speed, or whether you already understand a network. Treat it as a floor someone at CompTIA thought was reasonable, then build a calendar from the minutes you actually have.

The exam these schedules target is SY0-701. If your date is after the English retirement of June 11, 2027, read the version guide before you lock a plan.

Three illustrations

Each row assumes you study most days and that you review misses. None of them is a promise.

Starting pointWhat the time is forAn illustration, not a quota
You already work with networks and accountsScenario judgment and the two largest domainsAbout 30 to 45 hours, often across 4 to 6 weeks at 45 to 60 minutes a day
You have some IT experience and shaky security vocabularyTerms, then scenarios, with extra time on operationsAbout 50 to 70 hours, often across 8 to 10 weeks
You are new and still learning what a protocol doesNetworking review plus the five domainsPlan on several months. Do not copy the 30-hour suggestion

The first row is the closest match to CompTIA’s recommendation of Network+ and two years in a security or systems role. You do not have to earn Network+ first. The Network+ sequencing guide separates that credential from the networking you still need. If you cannot yet explain a secure protocol versus an insecure one, add that review before you add more practice volume. The study guide shows one sample week inside the middle of that range.

How to turn this into your calendar

  1. Put the SY0-701 date on a real calendar, or pick a target month if you have not booked.
  2. Count the days you will actually study. A plan that ignores your shifts will fail for a scheduling reason.
  3. Multiply by the minutes you can protect. Thirty minutes that happen beats a fictional two-hour block.
  4. Give the first share of each session to the domain you miss, then one of the heavier domains: Security Operations at 28% or Threats at 22%.

Build a Security+ outline from your date and minutes. The outline will not calculate a pass date, and it will not tell you that you are ready because a week elapsed.

What to ignore

Ignore any page that says everyone needs exactly four weeks, or that a practice percentage means you can book tomorrow. Also ignore SY0-601 study plans. CompTIA retired the English V6 exam on July 31, 2024.
