How to Get EPA 608 Certified: From Choosing a Test to Holding Your Card
EPA asks one thing of you: pass an EPA-approved test with an approved certifying program. Here are the steps in order, what each program decides for itself, and what to keep once you pass.
Short answer
To get EPA 608 certified, pass an EPA-approved test given by an EPA-approved certifying program: the 25-question Core plus the 25-question section for each equipment type you will service (Type I, II or III), or all three for Universal. EPA sets no training, age or experience requirement; its 608 and 609 overlap page says only passing the test is mandatory. Pick a program from EPA's list, test in person or remotely where offered, and expect your results and wallet card within 30 days of the test.
What EPA requires before you can take the 608 test
One thing: a passing score on an EPA-approved test given by an EPA-approved certifying program (40 CFR 82.161). EPA's page on the overlap between Sections 608 and 609 says it directly: "All training and review classes for Section 608 are voluntary; only passing the test is mandatory." Appendix D to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, which sets the standards certifying programs must meet, lists no age, schooling or work-experience requirement for candidates.
A program can add its own conditions. ESCO Institute's testing terms, for example, ask candidates under 18 to confirm that a parent or guardian has consented. Read the terms of the program you choose.
Two groups may work on equipment before they hold a card, according to EPA's questions-and-answers page for technicians:
- Students doing formal, course-driven laboratory work at a school. Training on the job, or training that is not part of a lab course, counts as service and requires certification or registered-apprentice status
- Registered apprentices who are closely and continually supervised by a technician certified for that type of equipment. Apprentice status lasts two years from first registering with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship or a recognized state council (40 CFR 82.152)
Step 1: Choose Core plus the type sections for your work
Every certification is built on the 25-question Core plus 25 questions for each type: Type I for small appliances, Type II for medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances, Type III for low-pressure appliances, and Universal for all three (40 CFR 82.161(a) and Appendix D). The type follows the equipment you will open, not your job title. The EPA 608 certification types guide maps common jobs to each type.
If you do not know yet where you will work, Universal saves a second booking later. At ESCO Institute, one $85 online exam fee includes the Core, Type I, Type II and Type III sections (checked October 28, 2026), so at that program adding sections does not change the fee. Studying for all four takes longer, which is why the four-test question bank planned for full EPA 608 prep is sorted by section.
Step 2: Pick a certifying program from EPA's list
EPA does not test anyone or issue cards. You choose from its list of certification programs, last updated October 27, 2026, and the notes beside each entry answer most logistics questions:
- "Remote testing available" or "Online testing only." On October 28, 2026, twelve entries carried the first note and three the second
- "Spanish available." The program offers its test in Spanish
- "Type I mail-in tests available." On that date this note appeared on one entry, the State Board of Refrigeration Contractors in Garner, North Carolina
- An asterisk. The program is intended only for that company's or agency's own employees
- Addresses. These are headquarters only. EPA says many programs test nationwide and can tell you their locations
If a school, training center or other local host gives the test, ask which program's test you are taking, because that program issues your card and keeps your record. EPA's questions-and-answers page gives the same advice to anyone trying to trace their scores. Prices differ by program and format, and the EPA 608 cost guide lists the questions worth asking before you pay.
Step 3: Match your study materials to EPA's new question bank
A test you sit in 2027 should come from EPA's revised question bank. ESCO Institute, describing EPA's August 18, 2026 communication to programs, says the old exam may not be graded after January 1, 2027, and that from January 2, 2027 only the new exam may be given and graded. ESCO pairs its 2026 exam with its 10th edition manual and its 2026 pressure-temperature chart. Ask your program which version it gives, and use material written for that version. The EPA 608 exam in 2027 guide has the full timeline.
The federal framework did not change with the new bank: Appendix D's format, question counts and pass marks are the same in the eCFR text current through October 22, 2026, and EPA's Test Topics page still carries its December 5, 2025 date. If you want structured practice before booking, you can see how planned EPA 608 prep splits practice by the test you book. It is marked "At launch" and cannot be bought yet.
Step 4: Book the EPA 608 test and know the test-day rules
- Format. Type II, Type III and Universal tests are closed-book and proctored in a secure environment (Appendix D). Only programs offering Type I alone may use a mail-in format, which needs 84% to pass and cannot count toward Universal. The EPA 608 open-book and online rules guide explains what each format allows
- Identification. Proctors must check photo identification, such as a driver's license, a government identification card, a passport or a military ID (Appendix D)
- Remote testing, one example. ESCO's online exam is proctored through ProctorU and needs a computer with webcam and microphone, a reliable connection, a government-issued photo ID, a quiet private room, and the Guardian browser or ProctorU extension. Tablets, iPads and Chromebooks are not supported, and ESCO asks you to schedule at least 72 hours ahead to avoid rush fees
- Other languages and oral tests. Programs are encouraged to offer tests in other languages or allow a translator. You can ask for an oral test in writing at least 30 days before the test date, explaining why (40 CFR 82.161(b)(3))
Step 5: Get your EPA 608 results and wallet card
Appendix D gives programs up to 30 days after the test to tell you your results and issue your card (for mail-in Type I, 30 days after the program receives your test and documents). ESCO's online exam page lists same-day results and a card mailed the next business day. When you finish, the program must also hand you a paper or electronic notice naming the program, its contact details, the proctor, and when to expect your score and card.
The card must show the program's name and EPA approval date, your name, your certification type, and a unique number that is not your Social Security number. The pass mark is 70% on closed-book tests, and the EPA 608 passing score guide turns that into correct answers per section. If your results never arrive, EPA's questions-and-answers page says to contact the organization whose test you took, since EPA does not hold test results.
Step 6: Keep proof of your EPA 608 certification
- A copy at your place of business, kept until three years after you stop working as a technician (40 CFR 82.161(a)(4))
- No need to carry the card. EPA's questions-and-answers page says it does not require you to carry it while servicing equipment, and suggests keeping a photo of it on your phone in case a customer asks
- Your name may be listed online. Programs other than federally run ones publish lists of the technicians they certify and must let you opt out (40 CFR 82.161(b)(6)). The EPA 608 certification lookup guide explains what those lists show
- No renewal. EPA's requirements page says Section 608 credentials do not expire
How long it takes to get EPA 608 certified
The federal rules add no waiting period of their own, so the calendar time is your study time plus the program's logistics. At ESCO's online exam, as one example, access codes arrive by email within one business day, booking at least 72 hours ahead avoids rush fees, results come the same day, and the card is mailed the next business day. In-person sessions depend on the host's schedule. At any program, the outer limit for results and the card is 30 days after the test.
Study time is the part you control. The free EPA 608 study plan takes your test date and daily study time and spreads them across Core and the types you check, and the EPA 608 practice questions give five original questions per test so you can find weak spots before you book. Once checkout opens you can compare the planned EPA 608 access periods against your test date; until then full prep is marked "At launch" and no payment can be taken.
