How Long Is the HESI A2? Exam Timing Explained

HESI A2 testing time depends on which academic exams your program assigns. Elsevier published estimated minutes per exam; your seat time is the sum of that set.

Short answer

HESI A2 duration is not a single official number for every candidate. Elsevier published estimated completion times for each academic exam. Your testing time is driven by the exams your program assigned, plus check-in, any diagnostic modules the school adds, and the timer rules for that sitting. Add the estimated minutes for your assigned exams, then confirm the appointment window with the testing office.

Total time follows the assigned exams, not a forum average

If a page says “the HESI is four hours,” ask which exams that writer was assigned. Elsevier estimated minutes per academic exam. Programs choose the set. Practice HESI A2 items with the clocks those assigned exams actually use in mind in Passy rather than training for a day-long stack you may never sit.

Elsevier’s estimated minutes (per assigned exam)

From Elsevier’s 2022 A2 scientific-evidence paper:

Academic examEstimated time
Reading Comprehension60 minutes
Grammar50 minutes
Vocabulary and General Knowledge50 minutes
Basic Math Skills50 minutes
Anatomy and Physiology25 minutes
Biology25 minutes
Chemistry25 minutes

Elsevier also groups English Language as 160 minutes when those three exams are taken, Math as 50 minutes, and Science as 75 minutes when those three science exams are taken. That is arithmetic on the same table, not a separate official “full day” product.

A candidate assigned only English Language plus Math is looking at a different day than a candidate assigned all seven academic exams.

What the estimated minutes do not include

  • Parking, ID check, and secure-browser launch
  • Unscored diagnostic modules some schools add
  • Breaks, when a site allows them
  • Remote security scans if you test with ProProctor (Prometric notes that a break during a remotely proctored exam can include a security scan while the timer continues)

Faculty-facing Evolve configuration can also include timer behavior, such as whether students are force-completed when time expires. Two programs can therefore run “the same” academic exams with different clock feelings.

How many questions are on the HESI A2? covers item counts. Do not merge those jobs: a shorter science exam can still feel rushed.

How to plan the appointment, not just the study block

  1. List assigned academic exams.
  2. Add Elsevier’s estimated minutes for that list.
  3. Ask the testing office for the appointment length they actually book.
  4. Add travel or remote setup time on purpose.

Remote versus center logistics are on Can you take the HESI A2 online?. Calculator availability, which can affect math pacing, is on Can you use a calculator on the HESI A2?.

Once the window is real, shape daily HESI A2 study minutes around that appointment in Passy.

Pacing inside an assigned exam

Estimated minutes are not a license to linger. A 50-minute math exam with 50 scored items is a different rhythm than a 25-minute A&P exam with 25 scored items. If one item stalls, mark it and move when the interface allows; do not spend the science clock reconstructing a conversion from memory.

Use mixed HESI A2 practice in Passy to notice which assigned exam is eating time, not which internet chart looked longest.

Untimed extra chapters will not teach you when to move on.

If timing is the only remaining fear, review slow HESI A2 methods in Passy instead of adding another untimed workbook chapter.
