Can You Take the HESI A2 Online? Remote vs Testing Center
HESI A2 can be taken at a testing center or remotely when a program offers that path. Prometric currently lists A2 and A2CT for ProProctor; some cohorts use other vendors.
Short answer
You can take the HESI A2 online only if your program makes a remote path available. Prometric currently lists the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) and A2 with Critical Thinking (A2CT) for in-person centers and for remote ProProctor where that option is offered. Other programs test only on campus, and some remote cohorts use a different vendor named in Elsevier Evolve instructions. Home testing is not a default right.
Remote testing is a program option, not a universal HESI mode
“Can I take HESI at home?” is answered by your admissions or testing office, not by a competitor’s screenshot. Prometric currently says A2 and A2CT may be taken in a Prometric center or virtually with ProProctor in addition to onsite testing for those exam types. That is availability at the vendor level. Your eligibility still has to match. Register through the path your school named, then practice the assigned HESI A2 exams in Passy.
What Prometric currently documents for Elsevier remote sittings
Prometric’s Elsevier remote page requires a computer with a camera, microphone, and internet connection, plus a lightweight app. It points candidates to a ProProctor compatibility check and, for HESI, to a compatibility check via hesiinet.elsevier.com before scheduling. An eligibility number can still be required.
If you take a break during a remotely proctored Prometric exam, Prometric says a full security scan occurs before you resume and that the exam timer continues during the break and the scan. That is a pacing fact, not a suggestion to skip water.
Elsevier’s March 2026 HESI NG A2 Distance Testing student guide likewise tells students to complete the ProProctor readiness check, review the ProProctor user guide, and download the application. It warns that exams not completed because test-taker requirements were missed may not qualify for a free exam or refund.
Other remote vendors exist
Evolve remote-testing student instructions for some A2/ALC cohorts describe scheduling with ProctorU (Elsevier – HESI) after redeeming an Evolve Course ID. If your packet says ProctorU, that is your vendor. Do not install ProProctor for a ProctorU appointment or the reverse.
Campus labs remain common. “Online” in a Facebook group may mean a school computer, not your kitchen table.

A simple decision flow
- Does the current admissions page allow remote testing for your term?
- Which vendor and software does it name?
- Does your device pass that vendor’s check on the network you will use?
- Is a quiet, indoor, well-lit space actually available at the appointment time?
If any answer is no, schedule a center or campus seat.
After the setting is fixed, run assigned HESI A2 practice in Passy on the same kind of desk setup you will use, minus the secure browser.

If a tech failure ends the sitting, follow the vendor and school’s written incident process.
