Short answer
The ASWB Clinical exam is challenging because it asks you to apply ethics, assessment, and intervention to vignettes, not because Passy can quote your odds. Values and Ethics is 36% of the current Clinical outline. You answer 122 questions in four hours, and only 110 are scored. A first-time pass rate from 2025 describes people who sat the pre-August 2026 exam. It is not the pass rate for the current three-area exam.
Hard at which task, on which exam?

ASWB has published exam-outcome research for earlier forms. Those populations sat a different blueprint. Quoting a 2025 Clinical first-time rate next to the August 2026 exam treats two tests as one. What actually makes this sitting difficult
Ethics is the largest slice. Thirty-six percent is a lot of confidentiality limits, boundaries, reporting, and documentation under time pressure. Values and ethics is where that weight sits. Memorizing a code heading is not the same task.
The stem is a scene. The guidebook distinguishes recall items from vignettes that ask what to do. FIRST, NEXT, BEST, and MOST are printed as qualifiers for a reason. Two plausible actions can both be “social work.” Only one matches the qualifier.
The cut moves by form. There is no single raw number. The published range is 66 to 78 correct out of 110 scored questions. Passing score is the full explanation. How many questions stops people from dividing 66 by 122.
Old books raise the wrong fear. A 170-question drill trains a format you will not sit. What changed in 2026 is the correction. The content did not become trivial because the count dropped. You have more time per item, and more of those items are reasoning.
What does not prove it is impossible
