LCSW Exam Changes in 2026: What Changed on the ASWB Clinical Exam
Exams on or after August 3, 2026 use 122 questions and three Clinical content areas. Older 170-question, four-area materials describe the retired exam.
Short answer
Social Work Licensing Exams administered beginning August 3, 2026 use a new structure. The current ASWB Clinical exam has 122 multiple-choice questions, 110 scored and 12 unscored, organized in three content areas rather than the retired four-area outline. Values and Ethics is now 36% of the Clinical exam. The four-hour limit remains. Older books that still teach 170 questions, with 150 scored and 20 pretest, are describing the exam that this guidebook replaced.
August 3, 2026 is the line
If your Authorization to Test is for an appointment on or after that date, the current guidebook is the format. Check a few items against the three-area outline in Passy before you trust a course whose sample still says 170 questions.
ASWB’s 2024 practice analysis, described in the guidebook as the Social Work Census, is the basis for these exams. The association has said the updated exams launched from that work. The candidate-facing change is concrete: two sections of 61 questions, 12 pretest items mixed in, and three content areas with percentages beside them.

Do not treat that retired column as a second current exam. Also do not assume every old topic vanished. Confidentiality, risk assessment, and intervention choices are still on the outline. They are sorted differently, and ethics carries more of the Clinical weight.

Reasoning got more room. Recall did not disappear
The guidebook says some items are simple recall and others are application and reasoning, with nearly two minutes per question across 240 minutes and 122 items. That is more time per item than a 170-question sitting in the same four hours. It is not a promise that the exam became easier.
Passing language changed with the form length. ASWB’s scoring page now says the passing score generally ranges from 66 to 78 correct out of 110 scored questions. Passing score refuses the fake universal percentage.
One change that is easy to miss
Online proctoring is a separate story from the blueprint. The pilot was suspended effective July 31, 2026. Can you take the LCSW exam online? is the current answer. Do not use a March 2026 pilot article as if remote testing were still generally available.
Drop any drill that still uses four retired domains in Passy once you can state the three current percentages.
The old material was reorganized. It was not erased, and it was not replaced by a shorter trivia exam.
