LCSW Exam Study Guide 2026: What to Study for the ASWB Clinical Exam
Study the current ASWB Clinical examination: three content areas, 122 questions, and a plan that does not recycle the retired four-area outline.

Passy’s LCSW exam resources focus on the ASWB Clinical examination, which many jurisdictions use as one part of clinical social work licensure. For exams administered on or after August 3, 2026, study three areas: Values and Ethics (36%), Assessment and Planning (32%), and Intervention and Practice (32%). The sitting is 122 multiple-choice questions, 110 of them scored, with a four-hour limit. Passing the exam does not by itself grant an LCSW or LICSW in every jurisdiction. Your board still sets education, supervision, and the license title.
Study the exam you will actually sit
Search results still mix “LCSW exam” with the Masters exam, a state law test, and the Clinical outline that ended in August 2026. Start by naming the category your board approved. Build the week around the current three areas in Passy instead of a book that still lists four domains.
The Clinical category is for applicants with a master’s degree in social work and clinical experience as the jurisdiction defines it. Associate, Bachelors, Masters, and Advanced Generalist are different exams. A study guide for one of those will not match this weight.
Put the hours where the outline puts the items
Values and Ethics is 36%. That is the largest Clinical area: confidentiality limits, consent, boundaries, mandated reporting, documentation, supervision ethics, and diversity in service delivery. LCSW values and ethics is the map. Do not reduce it to memorizing the NASW Code.
Assessment and Planning is 32%. The current guidebook’s own example is about 36 scored questions on a 110-question scored set. Practice decisions, then check the clock
The guidebook says every item maps to an applied knowledge statement, and that the exam includes both simpler recall and application or reasoning questions. A term list will not train FIRST, NEXT, or BEST. Work a short set of original Clinical items in Passy and read why the other options lost.
You have four hours, split into two 61-question sections of up to two hours. An optional scheduled break of up to 10 minutes sits between them, and the clock stops only for that scheduled break. How long is the LCSW exam? separates that break from an unscheduled one.
There is no single raw number that passes every form. ASWB says the passing score generally ranges from 66 to 78 correct answers out of 110 scored questions. Passing score explains why that is not “70%.”
