LCSW Practice Test: ASWB's Official Practice Test vs Free Questions

Compare ASWB's US$85 Clinical online practice test with the guidebook's sample items and free practice sets, and see when each one helps and what a practice score can't tell you.

Short answer

ASWB sells one official LCSW practice test: the Clinical online practice test, US$85, open only to candidates already registered for the exam. It is a full-length, 122-question test made of retired exam questions, with a four-hour timer, one attempt, a score, and rationales you can review for 30 days from launch or until ASWB receives your exam score, whichever comes first. Free options are smaller: the sample questions in ASWB's guidebook and free practice sets such as Passy's 20 questions. Treat any practice score as feedback, not a prediction of your result.

Which LCSW practice test is official?

Only one: ASWB’s Clinical online practice test. The guidebook describes it as a full-scale, 122-question test composed of actual retired exam questions, with a timer, a score, and a review feature with explanations and rationales. It costs US$85, and you can buy it only after you register for the exam, because the purchase needs the Authorization to Test number from ASWB’s email.

ASWB’s practice test page adds the limits. You complete it one time, with a four-hour timer. Access to review the questions, answers, and rationales lasts 30 days from the moment you launch it, or until ASWB receives your exam score, whichever comes first. There is only one version per exam category, so a second purchase repeats the same test. ASWB also says its format does not exactly match the exam as given at Pearson test centers.

What free LCSW practice is there?

ASWB’s guidebook is free to download and includes the Clinical content outline, suggested references, and seven sample Clinical questions with keys and rationales. Registered candidates are also invited, in the Authorization to Test email, to FifthTheory’s free Test Mastery Inclusion program, which works on test-taking mindset with a self-assessment, a coaching guide, and a journal rather than exam questions.

Free sets from prep companies vary. Passy’s 20 free LCSW practice questions are original vignettes across the three Clinical content areas, each with a rationale. They are not ASWB items, and a 20-question mixed set cannot predict a pass.

A full prep bank is a fourth option, paid but open to anyone: full LCSW prep includes a four-hour, 122-question timed mock exam on the current format, next to its question bank.

When does each one help?

Early on, learn the style. The guidebook’s outline and sample questions show how a stem, a qualifier, and a rationale fit together. A short free set then shows which content area costs you the most items. ASWB’s own advice is that knowing the outline does more than piling up review questions that may not resemble the real exam.

In the middle, build volume. This is where a large bank helps, sorted the way the outline is; full LCSW prep has 2,200 questions you can practice one content area at a time, each with an explanation.

Near the end, rehearse once at full length. ASWB’s test is the only one built from retired exam questions, and the guidebook says some candidates use it to get a sense of pace. Because its review closes when ASWB receives your score, take it early enough to act on what it shows. If you want a first full-length sitting before that, a timed mock on the current 122-question format can come a few weeks earlier.

What can’t a practice score tell you?

It cannot tell you whether you will pass. The real exam is pass/fail against a passing score that varies by form, generally 66 to 78 correct out of 110 scored questions, and a percent from any practice set does not convert to that. Passing score explains the range.

What a practice score can show is where the misses cluster. ASWB’s review lets you open all the questions in a content area or only the ones you missed. Use that split to pick the next study block, and afterward full LCSW prep tracks your accuracy in each content area and names the one to focus on next.

Which practice tests should you skip?

Anything built on 170 questions. A test with 170 items, 150 scored, and four content areas describes the retired exam. How many questions and what changed show the current count and structure.

“Recalled” or “real” exam questions. The guidebook says discussing or posting exam questions violates the confidentiality statement every test-taker agrees to, and it treats exam security violations as a serious offense. A set sold as remembered items is a risk, not a shortcut.
