How Long Is the LCSW Exam? Time Limit, Sections, and Breaks
The ASWB Clinical exam allows four hours: two 61-question sections of up to two hours each, plus an optional 10-minute scheduled break.
Short answer
The current ASWB Clinical exam gives you four hours, divided into two sections. Each section has 61 questions and its own two-hour limit. After you submit section one, you cannot return to it. You may take an optional scheduled break of up to 10 minutes between sections, and that break stops the clock. Unscheduled breaks do not. The tutorial before the exam is outside the four hours.
Two clocks, not one long scroll
People hear “four hours” and picture a single timer over 122 questions. The guidebook is more specific. Practice moving on inside a section in Passy so the two-hour cap is a habit, not a surprise.
You get two hours for the first 61 questions. If time expires, answers are recorded and that section closes. If you finish early, you review and submit. Submission is final. The second section is another 61 questions, numbered again from 1 to 61, with another two hours.

Scheduled break versus unscheduled break
After section one, you may take a scheduled break of up to 10 minutes. The exam clock stops for that break. You can take less. Unused break time is not added to section two. If you stay out longer than 10 minutes, the extra time comes out of the exam.
You may also take unscheduled breaks by signaling a proctor. The clock keeps running. On every break you may leave the testing room only for the closest restroom and for a drink or snack. You may not leave the building. Take your photo identification.
Arrive about 30 minutes early. The appointment includes check-in, the tutorial, a short exit survey, and check-out beyond the four-hour exam. The tutorial itself does not consume exam time. If you are late, you can lose the fee and the seat.
What the extra time per item does not mean
Across 240 minutes and 122 questions, the guidebook estimates nearly two minutes each, with recall items leaving time for reasoning items. That average is not a requirement to use two minutes every time. A slow vignette can still break a section.
