How to Register and Schedule the LCSW / ASWB Clinical Exam

Apply to your licensing board, register with ASWB, wait for the Authorization to Test, then schedule at Pearson VUE. Jurisdiction rules still vary.

Short answer

Registration is three organizations, not one checkout. Apply to the social work board or college where you want the license and wait until you are approved for an exam category. Then register and pay ASWB. ASWB emails an Authorization to Test, usually within two business days. Use that email to schedule a Pearson VUE appointment. Your board decides eligibility. ASWB does not issue the license.

Board first, then ASWB, then Pearson

Candidates lose fees by paying ASWB before the board has approved a category, or by booking from memory without the Authorization to Test. Keep Clinical practice moving in Passy while the paperwork is in motion. The approval letter is not a study method.

The guidebook’s order is stable:

  1. Apply for a license with your social work board. The board tells ASWB which category you may take.
  2. Register and pay ASWB. The Clinical fee is US $260. Exam cost separates that fee from board charges. Use the name that matches the identification you will bring.
  3. Receive the Authorization to Test. It is good for one exam and may last up to a year, unless your board sets an earlier expiration.
  4. Schedule with Pearson, online or by phone, using the instructions in that email. Nonstandard arrangements often must be scheduled by phone.

Request nonstandard testing arrangements, including extra time when English is not your primary language, before you register and pay. They cannot be added after the appointment is scheduled.

What scheduling does not finish

Pearson sends a confirmation. If you cancel or reschedule online, finish every step until that confirmation exists. An unfinished cancellation can leave the old appointment in place.

You may test at a Pearson center, and the score is reported to the jurisdiction where you applied. Online testing is not the current general option. The four-hour, two-section clock is in how long the exam is.

If you miss the expiration on the Authorization to Test, you can forfeit the fee. One extension of up to six months may be available per registration. That is not the same rule as the 90-day wait after a fail. Failed the exam? is a new registration.

Use the waiting weeks for mixed Clinical items in Passy rather than refreshing the status page.

Board approval, the Authorization to Test, and the Pearson confirmation are three different emails.

Point the remaining weeks at the three content areas in Passy once the date is real.

An unfinished cancellation can leave the old appointment in place. Finish every Pearson step until a confirmation exists.

Use one quiet mixed block in Passy after that confirmation is in hand.
