Can You Take the LCSW Exam Online in 2026?
ASWB suspended its online-proctoring pilot effective July 31, 2026. The current Clinical exam is scheduled at Pearson VUE test centers.
Short answer
Not as a general option. ASWB suspended the online-proctoring pilot for the Social Work Licensing Exams effective July 31, 2026. The current path is a Pearson VUE test center. Articles that describe remote testing for candidates who lived far from a center, or for certain nonstandard arrangements, describe the pilot while it was active. They do not describe availability after the suspension.
The pilot ended before the new exam began
ASWB announced the suspension on July 20, 2026, with an effective date of July 31, 2026. The pilot had started on March 23, 2026. It was limited to test-takers who lived more than 100 miles from a Pearson center or who were approved for certain nonstandard arrangements. It was never an open “take the LCSW exam at home” program. Prepare for a test-center clock in Passy rather than a vendor page that still sells an at-home seat.
ASWB said a cheating attempt was detected and the exam was stopped, and that continuing online proctoring was not sustainable. The association also said it may explore other access options later. That sentence is not a current remote appointment.
What to do with old links
A page titled as if the pilot is about to start is historical. Check the date. If it does not mention the July 31, 2026 suspension, do not use it to plan transportation.

Nonstandard arrangements still exist. They are requested from ASWB before you pay, and they are not the same thing as the suspended pilot. Extra time, a separate room, or other approved arrangements are board-and-ASWB decisions. They do not restore OnVUE by default.
Money and format are separate questions
Someone charging an “online LCSW exam fee” is not quoting ASWB’s US $260 Clinical registration. Exam cost is that registration. What changed in 2026 is the blueprint. Remote delivery and the three-area outline moved on different dates. Do not merge them.
Use the weeks before a center date for mixed Clinical decisions in Passy.
The appointment is still a building, a check-in, and a section clock. A pilot article from spring 2026 does not change the ride.
Revisit the vignettes that still collapse under a two-hour section in Passy once the address of the center is on the confirmation.
A suspended pilot is not a promise that remote testing will return.
