How Much Does the LCSW Exam Cost? ASWB Clinical Exam Fees Explained
ASWB’s Clinical exam registration fee is US $260. State application, background, and supervision costs are separate and vary by jurisdiction.
Short answer
ASWB charges US $260 to register for the Clinical exam. Associate, Bachelors, and Masters registrations are US $230. The fee is nonrefundable. It does not include your licensing board’s application fee, background check, supervision costs, or an optional ASWB online practice test. Those amounts depend on the pathway and the jurisdiction.
$260 is the Clinical registration, not the whole path
Search pages often add a board fee from one state and call the sum “the LCSW exam cost.” Spend the study hours on the exam that fee actually buys in Passy after you separate the charges.
The 2026 guidebook lists the exam registration fees and says all fees are nonrefundable. ASWB accepts Mastercard, Visa, and Discover. If you do not test before the Authorization to Test expires, you forfeit the exam fee. An extension of up to six months may be available, and the guidebook allows no more than one extension per registration.
At registration, ASWB also offers its own online practice test for US $85. That is ASWB’s retired-item practice product for registered candidates. It is not included in the $260, and it is not a Passy subscription.
Costs that are easy to mix together
Board application. Eligibility, transcripts, and jurisprudence or state-law exams, where they exist, are the regulator’s process. ASWB does not set those prices.
Background check and supervision. Fingerprints and the cost of clinical supervision are not exam-registration lines.
A retake. You pay the exam fee again when you register for another attempt. Failed the LCSW exam? is the 90-day rule. Do not pay a new registration while a waiting-period waiver is still undecided.
A missed appointment. Late arrival can mean you do not test and you lose the fee. How to register is the order: board, ASWB, then Pearson.
What the fee does not buy
It does not buy a license. It does not reserve a specific Pearson seat until you schedule with the Authorization to Test. Can you take the exam online? matters if someone is selling a remote-proctoring package. The pilot is suspended.
