NAPLEX Cost in 2027: Build a Budget Before You Book
Build a staged budget for a 2027 NAPLEX appointment using current fees, conditional processing, discounts, and a worksheet for rechecking each charge before payment.
Short answer
For a 2027 NAPLEX budget, start with the $620 standard application-and-exam baseline: $100 to apply and $520 to purchase the exam, according to NABP's fee schedule checked November 3, 2026. Candidates who need the separate $85 eligibility-processing service ordinarily budget $705 before other expenses. These are current charges, not confirmed 2027 prices; recheck each charge before paying and record application payments separately from the later exam purchase. State licensing charges, any required law examination, travel, and preparation are separate, while an approved Armed Forces discount can reduce the initial application and exam charges.
What can you budget now for a 2027 NAPLEX appointment?
For a 2027 NAPLEX appointment, use $620 as your current fee baseline: a $100 eligibility application plus a $520 exam purchase, according to NABP's fee schedule, checked November 3, 2026. Add $85 if your application requires NABP's eligibility-processing service, bringing the baseline to $705.
These amounts are a starting point for saving, not verified 2027 prices. The sources checked for this guide do not establish a separate 2027 fee schedule or guarantee unchanged charges. Recheck the official price before each payment; planning in advance does not lock in today's price.
Those are exam-related subtotals. They do not include your board's licensing charges, any required law examination, travel, or study materials. Keep those expenses on separate lines so a correct NAPLEX fee does not become an incomplete licensing budget.
| Charge | Amount | When to include it |
|---|---|---|
| NAPLEX eligibility application | $100 | Standard application, before any approved discount |
| NAPLEX exam purchase | $520 | After eligibility is approved |
| NABP eligibility processing | $85 | When the service applies to your jurisdiction and application |
| Standard application plus exam | $620 | Before processing and optional costs |
| Application, exam, and applicable processing | $705 | Before optional costs |
Application and exam purchase are separate stages. Paying the application fee does not buy a testing appointment. Use the NAPLEX registration and ATT checklist to connect each payment with the confirmation you should receive.
Preparation is another budget decision. First identify the areas you need to review using what is on the NAPLEX. For broader practice, full NAPLEX prep planned for launch includes 825 questions across five content domains; keep any future purchase separate from your official exam charges.
When does the extra eligibility processing fee apply?
NABP lists its eligibility service for Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, and Wisconsin. The list and fee were checked November 3, 2026.
The $85 processing payment covers one jurisdiction for one year and normally covers eligibility processing for both NAPLEX and MPJE. It is not the purchase price of either exam. In Alaska, Idaho, and Michigan, the service covers NAPLEX only because MPJE is not currently required there, according to the bulletin.
Do not add $85 automatically to every exam purchase or treat it as a fee for each exam within the covered service period. Check whether your application needs the service and whether an existing payment still covers it. Your actual eligibility dates also matter: the bulletin describes eligibility as typically lasting one year, and NABP cannot extend it.
Before paying for a 2027 attempt, recheck the service list, your primary jurisdiction, and your actual eligibility dates. If a processing payment or approval crosses into the new year, use its own coverage dates rather than assuming January starts a new period. If the service does not apply, leave that line out and check your board's separate charges directly.
Which payments come before eligibility approval, and which come later?
NABP separates the application from the exam purchase under the process checked November 3, 2026. For a target appointment in 2027, reserve money by stage:
- Before applying: confirm your jurisdiction and seek any Armed Forces discount approval.
- At application: pay the current application charge and any applicable eligibility-processing fee.
- After eligibility approval: recheck the exam price and your eligibility dates before purchasing the exam.
- For optional services: record a separate payment decision for each transfer or practice purchase.
Your application and exam purchase could fall in different calendar years. That is a planning possibility, not a recommendation to apply by a particular date. Follow your actual eligibility progress, and use the registration guide for the full sequence.
Choose optional services deliberately and keep charges for changed plans separate. The amounts below were checked November 3, 2026; recheck any that become relevant to your 2027 budget.
| Service or event | Amount | Budget treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Score transfer | $105 per additional jurisdiction | Add only the destinations you choose |
| Official Pre-NAPLEX | $90 per attempt | Optional practice expense |
| Pearson rescheduling | $50 | Possible charge if you change your appointment |
| Rescore | $200 | Separate request after testing; see the results guide before choosing it |
| Ordinary resit after a missed appointment | $520 | Potential replacement exam charge |
| Approved emergency resit | $190 | Conditional charge, requiring NABP approval |
| Retake after failing | $100 application + $520 exam | New application and purchase after renewed eligibility |
The NAPLEX score-transfer guide explains destination and timing decisions. Enter transfers only when you intend to select additional jurisdictions.
Buy practice on a useful schedule. NABP's Pre-NAPLEX must be taken within seven days of purchase and has no refunds, so reserve the time before spending $90. See the Pre-NAPLEX practice-test guide for that purchase decision. You can also begin with 20 free NAPLEX practice questions.
A missed appointment and a failed exam are different events. A resit replaces a missed session; a retake follows an unsuccessful attempt. An emergency resit is not automatic: the documented request must reach NABP within three business days. Use the existing NAPLEX passing-score and results guide for retake and rescore context before adding either expense.
When comparing preparation resources, consider whether you need longer practice as well as short sets. A 225-question mock exam is planned for launch as part of full NAPLEX prep, alongside the question bank; no practice purchase guarantees a passing result.
Can an Armed Forces discount reduce your exam bill?
Yes. NABP's Armed Forces policy, checked November 3, 2026, provides a 100% discount on the initial NAPLEX application and examination purchase for eligible active members, reservists, and honorably discharged veterans. Eligible spouses receive a 50% discount on that one purchase.
Request approval and submit the required documents before applying for the exams. Do not pay first on the assumption that the discount will be applied afterward.
The discount does not cover eligibility processing, retakes, resits, score transfers, or fees associated with expired eligibility. It therefore does not make the whole licensing process free.
For a qualifying spouse, the $620 application-and-exam portion becomes $310. If $85 processing also applies, the subtotal is $395, before any score transfers, state fees, or other expenses. Write the discount against the eligible charges only, then add excluded charges at their full amount.
How do you build and update your 2027 budget worksheet?
Use this Passy planning worksheet for your target 2027 appointment. It is an editorial budgeting aid, not an official payment calendar. Enter your own dates as eligibility and booking become clearer. The baseline column uses fees checked November 3, 2026; replace estimates with the actual quote before each payment.
| Item and status | Planned payment stage / your date | Checked baseline | Rechecked quote / date | Reserved | Still to reserve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Application — required, subject to approved discount | Apply / ___ | $100 | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Processing — conditional | Application, if applicable / ___ | $85 | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Exam purchase — required, subject to approved discount | After eligibility / ___ | $520 | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Score transfer — optional | Chosen transfer purchase / ___ | $105 per destination | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Pre-NAPLEX — optional | When ready to use it / ___ | $90 per attempt | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Board charges — verify requirements | Board's required stage / ___ | Confirm | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Law exam — if required | Applicable exam's payment stage / ___ | Confirm | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Travel and preparation — personal choices | Your chosen dates / ___ | Estimate separately | ___ | ___ | ___ |
Leave an unknown cost marked confirm, not zero. Split travel and preparation into separate lines in your own copy. For an unpaid item, subtract the money already reserved from the rechecked charge to find what you still need to set aside; once paid, record the receipt and remove it from the unpaid total.
These arithmetic examples help check the worksheet. They use current charges, not a quote for 2027 or for the complete licensing process.
| Example | Calculation | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| Standard application and exam | $100 + $520 | $620 |
| With eligibility processing | $100 + $520 + $85 | $705 |
| With one score transfer | $100 + $520 + $105 | $725 |
| With processing and one transfer | $100 + $520 + $85 + $105 | $810 |
| Approved spouse discount plus processing | ($100 + $520) × 50% + $85 | $395 |
If you pay the application before the exam purchase, mark that first line paid and continue saving for the later charge. Do not add the full $620 baseline again on top of an application payment. Keep unknown board and personal costs visible until you verify them.
Use the free NAPLEX study plan to match preparation spending to your study needs. If recall review is a priority, full NAPLEX prep planned for launch includes 580 flashcards; compare that planned resource with materials you already have.
Which prices and board charges must you confirm before paying?
Before each payment for your 2027 attempt, reopen the relevant official fee and policy page and record the quote and date in your worksheet. Also verify board charges and any required law exam directly with the responsible organization; neither is included in the $620 baseline. Then use this payment check:
- Confirm the primary jurisdiction. Changing it requires canceling and applying again, including another nonrefundable $100 application fee.
- Check processing and discounts. Establish whether the $85 service applies and obtain any Armed Forces discount approval before applying.
- Choose score-transfer destinations. Budget $105 for each additional jurisdiction you intend to select.
- Check eligibility before buying. NABP does not allow exam purchase with 10 or fewer business days remaining in eligibility.
- Save confirmations and change deadlines. A planned change is not complete until Pearson confirms it.
Under the cancellation rules checked November 3, 2026, cancel or reschedule at least two business days before the appointment. NABP's example is Thursday at 9 a.m. for a Monday 9 a.m. test. Without timely notice, you forfeit the testing fee. To cancel a booked exam completely, cancel the Pearson appointment first and the NABP exam application second.
The application fee is nonrefundable. An exam-fee refund may be available while eligibility remains valid, but do not assume every cancellation qualifies. Before committing to payment, finish the budget lines for your jurisdiction, confirm your intended appointment timing, and save the current official fee information with your records.
