NBCOT StudyPack and Practice Tests for the OTR: What Each Aspire Tool Gives You

NBCOT sells its own OTR study tools, from the $85 StudyPack to single-use practice tests that return a scaled score. Here is what each tool includes, which practice tests aren't in the StudyPack, what a practice score can and can't tell you, and a sequence that doesn't waste one-time attempts.

Short answer

NBCOT's Aspire tools for OTR candidates include a free Entry-Level Self-Assessment, the $85 Exam StudyPack, OTR Practice Tests 1 to 3 with 110 questions each, a Scenario Item Practice Test with ten scenario sets, a Study Guide ($60 in print, $40 electronic), $15 Flashcards, a $9 Knowledge Match game, Practice Sims and a $199 feelReady Workshop. Practice tests return a scaled score like the exam's, but each is single-use and doesn't show which answers you missed. Practice Tests 2 and 3 aren't in the StudyPack. NBCOT says no tool guarantees a better result.

NBCOT is the only source of practice questions written by the organization that writes the exam, and its tools are built, its study tools page says, on "the validated domain, task, and knowledge statements" behind the certification exams. That makes them worth understanding before you spend money or a one-time attempt. Prices and contents below were checked on NBCOT's product pages and in its candidate handbook on October 27, 2026.

The handbook gives the prices for the StudyPack, Study Guide, Flashcards and Knowledge Match, and the workshop page gives its fee. The practice test and Practice Sims prices aren't shown on the public product pages, where adding a product to the cart requires logging in, so they aren't listed here. The pages checked show no student discount. The OTR exam cost guide puts these tools next to the exam fees.

What the NBCOT StudyPack includes, and what it doesn't

NBCOT's StudyPack page answers the common questions directly:

  • Single-use parts. "You can only use the pre-test, practice tests, and full practice exam one time." The flashcards and Knowledge Match product pages describe those two as unlimited
  • Access. It lasts until you pass the exam
  • After an unsuccessful attempt. You receive a fresh StudyPack, which lets you retake the pre-test, practice test and full practice exam
  • Mini tests. These give "immediate feedback with answers, rationales, and references," which the practice tests don't
  • Format. The handbook calls it mobile-friendly

What isn't in it: OTR Practice Tests 2 and 3, which NBCOT's practice tests page marks as not included, and the Practice Sims and the workshop, which are sold separately. The practice tests page doesn't say whether the Scenario Item Practice Test is part of the StudyPack, so read the product description before buying both.

One small inconsistency: the handbook says the StudyPack's flashcards "include even more cards" than the standalone deck, while the flashcards page says they are "the same flashcards." Either way, if you buy the StudyPack, you don't need the separate flashcards.

How to read an NBCOT practice test scaled score

NBCOT says its practice tests give "a feedback report with a scaled score, just like you'll receive from NBCOT on your exam scoring day," and that the StudyPack's full practice exam gives "a scaled score like you will on your exam day." On the real exam, 450 on the 300–600 scale passes, as the passing score guide explains.

What the pages checked don't say: how closely a practice score tracks the exam result, or which practice score NBCOT would consider safe. So read a practice score as a reading of where you are, not a forecast. Three practical reasons to hold it loosely:

  • It's shorter. A practice test has 110 questions, against 180 on the exam
  • It doesn't explain itself. NBCOT says practice tests don't tell you which answers you got wrong, so the score shows where you stand but not why
  • It's one moment. A score taken in week 3 of a 12-week plan describes week 3

The StudyPack page also mentions that you can "compare your scores to others," which gives context, not a prediction. Scores that candidates trade on forums are anecdotes, without the conditions under which they were taken.

Because the practice tests don't show item feedback, it helps to pair them with practice that does. NBCOT's mini tests and Study Guide include rationales, and you can pair single-use NBCOT tests with the explanation for every answer option planned in full OTR prep.

A sequence for NBCOT's single-use OTR tools

An editorial plan, so that each one-time attempt is used when it tells you the most:

WhenToolWhy then
Week 1Entry-Level Self-AssessmentNBCOT's Prepare page lists it as step 4: "Gauge your knowledge before you begin to study." It's free and reusable
Content weeksMini tests, flashcards, Knowledge Match, Study Guide questionsRationales and unlimited recall while you learn each domain
Middle of the planPractice Test 1A direction check once most content is covered
Last thirdScenario Item Practice Test, and Practice Test 2 or 3 if you bought themScenario practice and timing once you know the material
One to two weeks before the examStudyPack full practice examA full rehearsal close enough to count, with time left to adjust
After an unsuccessful attemptThe refreshed StudyPack's pre-test, practice tests and full practice examA new baseline for the retake

Practice tests don't have to be finished in one sitting, NBCOT says, but taking at least one in a single timed block tells you more about pacing. The OTR study plan guide shows where these fit week by week, and the retake guide covers the refreshed StudyPack after a failed attempt.

Free NBCOT materials to use first

Before paying for anything, these cost nothing:

  • The 2022 OTR content outline, the map every Aspire tool and every exam form is built from
  • The Entry-Level Self-Assessment, unlimited until you pass
  • Two sample scenario sets, linked from NBCOT's Foundations page, each with an answer key. NBCOT notes they "do not replicate the candidate experience on exam day"
  • The OTR exam tutorial, on Pearson VUE's site, linked from NBCOT's Take the Exam page
  • The reference textbook list on the Foundations page, with NBCOT's caution that using those books doesn't guarantee a passing score

The scenario-set guide shows how to work through the free sample sets so you get more from them than a score.

Copying rules for NBCOT study materials

Autocomplete shows people searching for free PDF copies of the StudyPack. NBCOT's handbook is blunt about that: its Aspire tools are copyrighted, and "Copying, sharing, or posting NBCOT's materials is illegal and violates the code of conduct." Violations can jeopardize your ability to sit for the exam or be certified. Principle 9 of the Code of Conduct also bars uploading or sharing NBCOT study tool content "through any platform including web-based study tools, AI applications, social media outlets, discussion forums, email."

Two more handbook statements are worth knowing. NBCOT says the people who help develop Aspire tools "have no access to confidential examination content," so Aspire questions aren't exam items. And NBCOT "does not require, approve, or endorse any preparatory courses or study materials" relating to its exams.

Where Passy's planned OTR prep fits next to NBCOT's tools

NBCOT's tools are the closest look at NBCOT's own style, but their scaled-score practice tests are single-use. Passy's full prep, planned for launch, is built differently: original single-answer questions tagged to the four domains, a 180-question mock exam, and no scenario sets. Its scores aren't on NBCOT's scale and don't predict a result. You can see what the 1,300 single-answer questions planned for OTR prep add to NBCOT's tools.

A practical split: use NBCOT for the self-assessment, the sample sets and one or two scaled-score check-ins, and use reusable practice for volume between them. Today, the 20 free OTR practice questions give a quick first sample of that kind of practice.

If you're budgeting both, you can weigh NBCOT's $85 StudyPack against the planned one-time OTR access prices. Checkout isn't open yet.
