NBCC's new NCE specifications take effect July 1, 2027, with a Summer 2027 launch: 170 three-option questions, six new domains, and a 100 to 500 score scale with 360 to pass. Here is what changes, which version you take, and what NBCC has not announced yet.
Read the guideThe NCE and the NCMHCE are both NBCC exams used for counselor licensure and the NCC credential, but they test in different ways. Compare format, scoring, timing, and content weights, see why your state board decides which one you take, and what changes in July 2027.
Read the guideThere is no single published NCE passing score. NBCC sets a cut score for each exam form with a modified Angoff method and statistical equating. Here is how the 160 scored questions count, what your score report shows, and what changes in 2027.
Read the guideNBCC offers two ways to register for the same NCE: as part of the National Certified Counselor application, or on its own for state licensure through CCE. Compare eligibility, the fees NBCC publishes, test windows, retake limits, and how scores reach your board.
Read the guideThe current NCE gives you 225 minutes for 200 questions, about 67 seconds each, with one scheduled break after question 100. Here are pacing checkpoints, what NBCC's handbooks say about going back after the break, and the break rules at test centers and on OnVUE.
Read the guideTesting on or after July 1, 2027? NBCC's crosswalk shows where today's six NCE domains land in the new outline and which 18 tasks are new. Use it to weight your study by the 2027 blueprint and practice for three answer options.
