How to Study for the 2027 NCE Using NBCC's Content Crosswalk

Testing on or after July 1, 2027? NBCC's crosswalk shows where today's six NCE domains land in the new outline and which 18 tasks are new. Use it to weight your study by the 2027 blueprint and practice for three answer options.

Short answer

If you take the NCE on or after July 1, 2027, study NBCC's 2027 Examination Specifications: six domains, 101 work tasks, and three answer options per question. NBCC's May 2026 crosswalk maps every current subdomain except Areas of Clinical Focus to the new tasks and lists 18 tasks with no 2019 equivalent, half of them in Legal & Ethical Compliance. Weight your study by the new blueprint, where Legal & Ethical Compliance and Provision of Counseling Interventions are 20% each.

Study the 2027 outline if you test on or after July 1, 2027

The NCE you take from July 1, 2027 is built on a different blueprint from today's exam, so the study guide on your shelf only partly fits. NBCC's 2027 Examination Specifications define six new domains and 101 work tasks, and its Examination Content Crosswalk, dated May 2026, shows exactly where each current subdomain goes. For a candidate who started on the old outline, that crosswalk is the most practical study document NBCC has published for the transition.

Start by confirming which exam you are preparing for. If your date falls before the change, you take the current 200-question NCE and should keep studying the current outline. NBCC has not yet announced the last test date for the current version, and a retake that falls after the change is on the new exam. The NCE 2027 changes guide lays out those dates and rules.

How today's NCE domains map to the 2027 outline

The crosswalk lists, for each 2019 domain, the 2027 domains its subdomains were mapped to by NBCC's subject matter experts.

Current domain (weight today)Maps to these 2027 domainsWhat to notice
Professional Practice and Ethics (12%)1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3B, 4, 5, 6Informed consent and confidentiality move into Intake (2A). Law, ethics codes, and documentation spread into Domains 5 and 6
Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis (12%)1A, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 5Most subdomains land in 2B Assessment. Choosing a treatment modality moves to treatment planning (3A.3)
Areas of Clinical Focus (29%)No task mappingClinical concerns are assessed throughout the exam through presenting problems
Treatment Planning (9%)2A, 3A, 3B, 4, 5Split into Treatment Planning (3A) and Continuity of Care (3B), which now carries aftercare, discharge, and relapse prevention
Counseling Skills and Interventions (30%)2A, 3A, 3B, 4, 5, 6The core of Provision of Counseling Interventions (Domain 4), including group linking and blocking
Core Counseling Attributes (8%)1B, 4Empathy, genuineness, and positive regard fold into task 4.14, using core counseling skills. Self-awareness goes to 1B

In practice, most of what you learned for today's exam still counts. The weights are what change: content that sat in a 12% domain now feeds a 20% Legal & Ethical Compliance domain, and the 29% clinical-focus domain becomes context for questions throughout the exam.

If you already started on today's outline, keep that work. The Passy NCE prep page shows the current domain breakdown, which you can line up against the table above to see which practice still transfers. The Passy bank covers the current exam only, with four-option questions, so it does not cover the 18 new tasks below or the three-option format.

The 18 NCE tasks with no 2019 equivalent

The crosswalk ends with a table of tasks the 2024–2025 work analysis added that do not map to anything on the 2019 outline. These deserve dedicated study time because older materials will not cover them.

  • Professional Development (1A): complete continuing education (1A.3), train in counseling ethics (1A.6), train in the ethical and legal use of artificial intelligence (1A.7), and train to work with different cultures or populations (1A.8)
  • Intake (2A): obtain informed consent for telemental health services (2A.7)
  • Treatment Planning (3A): assess for contraindications of treatment approaches (3A.8)
  • Continuity of Care (3B): develop a plan for disruption of service (3B.6)
  • Provision of Counseling Interventions (4): solicit client feedback about the counseling process (4.12)
  • Indirect Client Care (5): secure translation services in the client's preferred language (5.7)
  • Legal & Ethical Compliance (6): maintain licensure status (6.6), complete compliance training on insurance, credentialing, and billing (6.8), use telemental health platforms in line with state and federal law (6.9), carry professional liability insurance (6.12), practice within license portability rules such as the Counseling Compact (6.13), review an emergency preparedness plan (6.15), use an EHR or EMR (6.18), use AI within your practice (6.19), and market your practice appropriately (6.20)

Telemental health runs through several of these. NBCC's work analysis white paper says it was central to practice for 85% of survey respondents, which is why consent and platform compliance became explicit tasks.

Weighting NCE study time by the 2027 blueprint

NBCC publishes each domain's share of items. The item counts below are a Passy estimate that applies those shares to the 140 scored questions; NBCC does not publish counts per domain.

2027 domainShareTasksAbout how many scored items (Passy estimate)
1. Professional Development & Counselor Self-Awareness15%1921
2. Intake & Assessment18%1925
3. Treatment Planning & Continuity of Care15%2021
4. Provision of Counseling Interventions20%1528
5. Indirect Client Care12%817
6. Legal & Ethical Compliance20%2028
Total100%101140

Two readings help. Domain 5 has only eight tasks but carries 12% of the exam, so on average each of its tasks (collaboration, documentation, medication effects, referral lists, translation) stands for about 1.5% of the exam, more than in any other domain (Passy arithmetic). And the balance moves toward law and ethics: Legal & Ethical Compliance alone is 20%, while counseling skills and core attributes, 38% of today's exam combined, now map mainly to a single 20% domain.

Presenting concerns, theories, and tools NBCC flags for 2027

Section 8 of the specifications lists areas "most likely to appear," while noting that questions are not limited to them. Use the lists as a checklist against your notes:

  • Presenting concerns: anxiety and panic, depression and loneliness, grief, trauma and dissociation, substance misuse, suicidal and homicidal thoughts, eating behaviors, sleep, burnout, career and retirement, parenting and blended families, racism and discrimination, gender identity development, and more
  • Theoretical frameworks: CBT and related models (TF-CBT, CBT-SP, MBCT, cognitive processing therapy, ERP), person-centered, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, solution-focused, narrative, reality therapy, Gestalt, Adlerian, existential, emotionally focused therapy, the Gottman method, structural and Bowenian family therapy, internal family systems, the multicultural orientation framework, stages of group development, Krumboltz, and lifespan career development
  • Tools and assessments: DSM-5-TR, ICD-11-CM, the mental status exam, PHQ, BDI, BAI, PCL, AUDIT, C-SSRS, ASQ, the ACEs questionnaire, genograms, the Self-Directed Search, the MBTI, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and CAQH

The knowledge statements add a few items worth flagging: foundational statistics, diagnostic criteria in both DSM-5-TR and ICD-11, lethal means restriction, professional wills, and voluntary and involuntary commitment.

Practicing NCE questions with three answer options

Every 2027 NCE question has three options. As of October 25, 2026, NBCC had not posted sample questions in that format: its FAQ said practice materials would arrive around Summer 2026, but NBCC's NCE and exam preparation pages still point to materials for the current exam. The six sample questions in the current handbook have four options.

Until official samples appear, a few habits carry over well (Passy suggestions, not NBCC guidance):

  • Defend the answer, not just the elimination. With only three options, ruling out one leaves a two-way choice, so practice stating why the right answer beats the closest alternative.
  • Practice in halves. The 2027 exam lets you review each half before you submit it, then locks it, so train yourself to clear flagged items before a break.
  • Use the extra time per item. 225 minutes for 170 questions is about 79 seconds each, roughly 12 seconds more than today.

Current four-option practice still trains the reasoning on shared content such as risk assessment, informed consent, and group skills.

A study sequence for the 2027 NCE

  1. Download the 2027 specifications and the crosswalk from NBCC's NCE page.
  2. Rate yourself on all 101 tasks: confident, shaky, or new to you.
  3. Start with the overlap, the tasks that map from today's outline, so older materials keep working for you.
  4. Add the 18 new tasks, beginning with the nine in Legal & Ethical Compliance.
  5. Split your remaining hours by the blueprint table above, not by today's 30/29/12/12/9/8 weights.
  6. Check NBCC's NCE page every few weeks for practice materials and the transition date.

Passy's free NCE study planner uses the current outline's weights and warns you when your date falls on or after July 1, 2027. For a 2027-format exam, use the blueprint table here to set your split instead. If you can still test before the change, NCE exam prep on the current outline and the NCE pacing guide are built for that version, and the NCE vs NCMHCE comparison shows how both NBCC exams change together.
