NREMT Cognitive Exam vs BLS Skills Competency
National Registry EMT certification requires the cognitive exam and a State EMS Office approved BLS skills competency. The Registry does not set one required order. Each passed portion is valid 24 months.
Short answer
National Registry EMT certification requires both the cognitive examination and a State EMS Office approved BLS skills competency. The National Registry does not set a required order for those two. Check your program director or State EMS Office. Cognitive results and skills-competency results are each valid for 24 months from successful completion (older course-completion dates can have a shorter historical rule). Passing the computer exam alone does not finish certification.
Two requirements, not one computer score
National Registry EMT certification requires both the cognitive exam and a State EMS Office approved BLS skills competency. The Registry does not set one required order for those two. Ask your program and state, then keep cognitive practice moving even while a skills date is pending. Legacy talk of a single national “psychomotor exam weekend” is not the current National Registry EMT description. Skills are state EMS Office approved BLS competency.
The handbook FAQ is explicit: you do not have to take the cognitive exam before skills verification unless local rules say so. The reverse is also not a national mandate.
Dashboard language such as Certification Pending Requirement means the computer exam passed and skills competency is still outstanding.
What stays valid, and for how long
Examination results are valid 24 months from the month, day, and year of successful completion. For candidates with a course completion date prior to November 1, 2018, passed portions were valid 12 months—an historical rule, not the current default.
Skills competency results are also valid 24 months from successful completion.
If either clock runs out before the other requirement is done, you can lose a passed portion. Plan both. Do not assume a passed CAT lives forever.
Initial course completion itself is valid two years from the month and year of the course. Remedial education for a fourth cognitive attempt does not extend that course date.
How to apply is the cognitive ATT path. Exam day is Pearson. Cost is $104 per cognitive attempt, not a skills invoice.
When both dates exist, use a study plan that still covers the five current domains.
What “psychomotor” still means in conversation
Classmates may say psychomotor when they mean the state’s skills sign-off. On this page, use the Registry’s words so you do not study for a retired national psychomotor package.
Skills still matter for the cognitive exam. Scene safety, airway, and treatment items assume you can picture the hands-on task. What to study maps the five domains. Skills lab is not a substitute for CAT practice, and CAT practice is not a substitute for the state’s competency form.
Finish the credential, not only the score report
Certification is issued when the Registry’s requirements are complete. A passing cognitive result with pending skills is not a card.
States may add licensing steps after National Registry certification. Those are state rules.
The Guides hub and exam hub keep the cognitive library. This page only splits the two gates.
If skills are done and the CAT is not, put hours on the domain that still fails items.
If the CAT is done and skills are not, book the skills date before the 24-month clock becomes the problem.
Then keep a light general EMT block so neither requirement goes cold.
