PCCN Renewal: 432 Practice Hours Plus 100 Synergy CERPs or the Exam, Every Three Years

PCCN certification lasts three years. To renew on the Direct Care pathway you need 432 practice hours with acutely ill adults (144 in the final year) plus either 100 Synergy CERPs or a passing exam. Here is how to date your renewal, plan your CERPs by category, compare the fees and choose Inactive status if you fall short.

Short answer

PCCN certification lasts three years, starting on the first day of the month you pass. To renew on the Direct Care pathway, AACN requires a current, unencumbered U.S. RN or APRN license and 432 hours in direct care of acutely ill adults during the three years, with 144 in the final 12 months. You then add either 100 Synergy CERPs (at least 60 in Category A and 10 each in B and C) or a passing renewal exam. As checked October 27, 2026, renewal by CERPs costs $150 for members or $230 for nonmembers.

PCCN renewal has two parts, and both are required: practice hours, which prove you still care for acutely ill adults, plus either continuing education points or the exam. The dates are the easiest part to get wrong, so this guide starts with the calendar. All rules below are from AACN's PCCN renewal page, the PCCN Renewal Handbook (Direct Care, July 2026) and AACN's PCCN exam and policy handbooks, checked October 27, 2026.

How long PCCN certification lasts, and when to renew

AACN grants PCCN for three years. The period begins on the first day of the month in which you pass and ends three years later; AACN's own example runs from February 1, 2023 through January 31, 2026.

A fictional timeline, applying those rules to a nurse who passes on March 14, 2027:

DateWhat happens
March 1, 2027Certification period begins (first day of the month passed)
March 1, 2029 to February 28, 2030The final 12 months, when at least 144 of the practice hours must fall
About four months before, in late October 2029AACN starts emailing renewal notices, and online renewal opens
No later than 30 days before February 28, 2030Last date to apply if renewing by exam
February 2030Renewal by exam is no longer available in this last month
February 28, 2030Certification period ends
Up to 90 days after expirationGrace period to submit renewal, but no hours or CERPs earned in it count

AACN says you are responsible for renewing even if a notice never arrives, so keep your email address current in your AACN account.

The PCCN renewal practice-hour requirement

For the Direct Care pathway you need 432 hours as an RN or APRN in direct care of acutely ill adult patients during the three-year period, with 144 of them in the 12 months before your renewal date. The renewal handbook describes this as an average of 12 hours a month. The same rules as for initial eligibility apply:

  • Acuity, not unit name. AACN says eligibility is based on patient acuity, not unit type, but that hours in intermediate care, direct observation, step-down, telemetry, transitional care, subacute and cardiac catheterization areas, or other units as appropriate, likely qualify.
  • Supervisors at the bedside. Managers, educators, APRNs and preceptors may count hours supervising nurses or students at the bedside if they are actively involved, for example demonstrating how to apply ECG leads.
  • Location. Hours must be in a U.S.- or Canada-based facility, or one comparable to the U.S. standard of progressive care as shown by Magnet designation or Joint Commission International accreditation.
  • A verifier. You name a supervisor or an RN or physician colleague who can confirm your hours if you are audited. The honor statement says you may not list yourself or a relative.

You also need a current, unencumbered license for the whole period. Any provisions or conditions placed on your license must be reported to AACN within 30 days. Nurses whose work has moved away from the bedside can renew through the PCCN Knowledge Professional pathway instead, which has its own practice requirement and renewal handbook.

Option 1: renewing the PCCN by Synergy CERPs

CERPs (Continuing Education Recognition Points) are AACN's renewal credits, grouped by the Synergy Model's nurse competencies. You need 100 earned during your three-year period:

CategoryCompetenciesMinimumMaximum
AClinical judgment, clinical inquiry6080
BAdvocacy and moral agency, caring practices, response to diversity, facilitation of learning1030
CCollaboration, systems thinking1030

The other 20 go in the category of your choice, within those maximums. How AACN counts them:

  • Hours of education. One hour of education is 1 CERP, so a program awarding 6 contact hours is worth 6. No CERPs are given for registration, introductions, breaks, lunch, clinical time, or for completing certification exams.
  • Academic credit. One college credit is worth 15 CERPs; a 3-credit course is 45.
  • Your regular job doesn't count. Activities that are the focus of your primary nursing role can't be claimed, and one activity can be counted in only one category.
  • Memberships. Current membership in a professional nursing or healthcare organization earns 3 CERPs a year in Category C, for up to 2 organizations.
  • Certification courses. CERPs can be awarded for ACLS, BLS, PALS and NRP taken twice per certification period. AACN lists exam review courses among Category A topics.
  • Precepting. Preceptorship of at least 80 hours a year earns 10 CERPs a year in Category B.

A fictional plan that meets the rule: 64 CERPs in Category A from cardiac and pulmonary CE, an ACLS renewal and a review course; 18 in Category B from an ethics in-service and a palliative care module; 18 in Category C from three years of one membership (9) plus a communication skills course (9). That is 100, with every category inside its range.

You don't send your CERP log with the application. You keep it, with proof of each activity, for at least 3 years after your renewal date in case you are audited.

Option 2: renewing the PCCN by exam

You take and pass the same PCCN exam described in the PCCN exam format guide, and you still need the 432 practice hours. The rules are stricter than they look:

  • Apply early. Your application must be in at least 30 days before your certification expires, and the option isn't available in the last month of the period.
  • Pass before the renewal date. The exam must be completed before your scheduled renewal date.
  • No fallback to CERPs. You may not take the exam early and then try to renew by CERPs if you don't pass.
  • A fail means starting over. The policy handbook says that if you don't pass a renewal exam, you must meet initial eligibility requirements and apply to retake it. The PCCN retake guide covers what that involves.

A practical view: renewing by exam suits nurses who have few CERPs and test confidently. If you choose it, you can practice all 12 PCCN test plan categories before a renewal exam once full prep opens.

PCCN renewal fees

From the renewal handbook's fee table and application form, checked October 27, 2026:

Renewal optionAACN memberNonmemberRenewal plus 1-year membershipPlus 2-yearPlus 3-year
Renewal by Synergy CERPs$150$230$228$298$350
Renewal by exam$185$290$263$333$385
Inactive status$95$175$173$243$295

Renewal fees are for processing and are nonrefundable, and AACN notes that fees can change without notice. Membership isn't required to renew. The bundle columns show the member renewal fee plus AACN's 1-, 2- or 3-year membership ($78, $148 or $200), so joining at renewal costs about the same as paying the nonmember fee for a CERPs renewal. The PCCN exam cost guide shows the same math for the first exam.

If you renew by exam, any prep you buy comes on top of these fees; planned PCCN prep is a one-time payment from $19.99, with no subscription.

If you can't meet the PCCN renewal requirements

AACN offers three alternatives to letting the credential lapse. You choose one:

  • Inactive status. For nurses who don't meet the requirements yet but expect to. It gives up to 3 years from your scheduled renewal date to complete them. While Inactive you may not use "PCCN" after your name. To reactivate, your hours and CERPs must fall within a 3-year period, with 144 hours in the year before reactivation, and the new certification period starts on the first day of the month after you sign the renewal application. Inactive status may be held more than once, but not for two consecutive renewal periods. A CMC or CSC subspecialty tied to your PCCN goes Inactive too, unless you document another qualifying specialty certification.
  • Alumnus status. For nurses still working in nursing but no longer caring for acutely ill adults, even as a bedside supervisor, for enough hours. No CERPs or hours are required. "Alumnus PCCN" may appear written out on a résumé or business card, not after your signature or on a badge, and returning to active status means taking the exam as an initial applicant.
  • Retired status. For nurses retired from any position that requires an RN license, with the same display rule.

Being audited after you renew

AACN audits renewals at random after they are approved, without advance notice. If you are selected, you get an email and have 60 days to send a copy of your license, your CERP log with copies of the documentation, and the form verifying your clinical hours. The honor statement says that once you are selected, switching to renewal by exam, choosing Inactive status or completing more CERPs is not an option. Failing or ignoring an audit can lead to revocation, and AACN may notify your employer and state board of nursing.

The practical defense is a folder, paper or digital, where each certificate goes the day you earn it.

Your next step for PCCN renewal

Find your renewal date in your AACN dashboard and count back 12 months: that is when your 144 recent hours must fall. Then tally your CERPs by category against the minimums above. If you are leaning toward the exam, a planned 30-day PCCN access option for a short review is one way to refresh before your application deadline.
