Failed the PTCB Exam? PTCE Retake Rules and What to Do Next
PTCE retakes require an official score first. There is no wait before the second or third attempt. A six-month wait applies before the fourth. After four attempts, PTCB requires approved preparation evidence.
Short answer
If you fail the PTCE, wait for the official score in your PTCB Account before you reapply. PTCB’s current guidebook says there is no retake wait period for the second and third attempts, but you must wait six months for the fourth attempt. After four attempts, you must submit evidence of acceptable preparation activities for PTCB review before more attempts. Preparation completed before the most recent attempt does not count. Each attempt requires a new application and fee.

After four attempts, evidence is not optional
Acceptable preparation activities listed in the current guidebook include:
- Six months or more of tutoring by a pharmacist or PTCB CPhT (attestation form required)
- Completion of a formal review course or non-accredited training program
- Completion of an ASHP/ACPE-accredited training program
- Graduation from a pharmacy technician associate degree (A.S.) program
PTCB states that preparation activities completed prior to the most recent attempt will not be considered. Repeating a course you already finished before the last fail does not automatically reset eligibility.
The passing standard remains a scaled 1,400. PTCB passing score is the cut. This page is the attempt policy.
Change the study object, not only the calendar

Diagnose the domain that missed in Passy from the official report’s knowledge-area information when PTCB provides it, then mix items again so one chapter does not become the whole week.
