Failed the PTCB Exam? PTCE Retake Rules and What to Do Next
If you fail the PTCE, wait for the official score report. PTCB Retake Policy v1.2 sets no wait for attempts two and three, six months before attempt four, and approval after four attempts.
Short answer
If you fail the PTCE, wait for the official score report before you reapply. PTCB Retake Policy v1.2 (March 2025) sets no retake waiting period for the second and third attempts, a six-month wait before the fourth attempt, and required preparation evidence plus PTCB approval after four attempts. Preparation finished before the most recent attempt does not count. Your PTCB Account shows your own attempt count and score status. It does not replace this general policy. A preliminary on-screen result is not the official score. Each attempt requires a new application and fee.

You need the official score report before reapplying. Do not rebook from the unofficial on-screen result.
PTCB's current Retake Policy, version 1.2 dated March 2025, is the help-center article linked from the PTCB Guidebook. The same article states different attempt rules for CSPT and CPTEd. Those rules do not apply to the PTCE. Your PTCB Account is where you see your own score status and attempt history. It is not a substitute for the general policy.

After four attempts, evidence is not optional
Acceptable preparation activities in that policy, and on the June 2025 attestation form, include:
- Six months or more of tutoring by a pharmacist or PTCB CPhT (attestation form required)
- Completion of a formal review course or non-accredited training program
- Completion of an ASHP/ACPE-accredited training program
- Graduation from a pharmacy technician associate degree (A.S.) program
PTCB states that preparation activities completed prior to the most recent attempt will not be considered. Repeating a course you already finished before the last fail does not automatically reset eligibility.

Change the study object, not only the calendar
