SHRM-CP Exam Cost: Member and Nonmember Fees, Early-Bird Savings and Every Extra Charge
The SHRM-CP costs $399 for SHRM members and $499 for nonmembers at standard rates, with lower early-bird, student and military prices. Here is the full fee table, when membership pays for itself, and the reschedule, transfer, retake and recertification costs.
Short answer
As of October 27, 2026, the SHRM-CP costs $399 for SHRM members and $499 for nonmembers at the standard rate, or $350 and $450 at the early-bird rate. Military rates are $369 and $469 standard; students enrolled in an HR degree program pay $199 and $299. Every rate includes a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Extras can include a $45 or $60 Prometric fee to reschedule, $150 to transfer to the next window, and a full new fee to retake. Recertification costs $165 or $210 every three years.
What you pay for the SHRM-CP depends on three things you control: whether you are a SHRM member when you apply, whether you apply in the early-bird period, and whether you qualify for the student or military rate. The amounts below come from SHRM's exam details page and the 2026 SHRM Certification Handbook, checked on October 27, 2026. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP cost the same.
SHRM-CP exam fees in 2026
| Rate | SHRM member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Early bird | $350 | $450 |
| Standard | $399 | $499 |
| Military early bird | $320 | $420 |
| Military standard | $369 | $469 |
| Student early bird | $150 | $250 |
| Student standard | $199 | $299 |
For the December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027, window, the early-bird period closed on August 31, 2026, so standard rates apply until applications close on December 24. SHRM has not published 2027 dates; in 2026, early-bird applications for the May window ran from January 5 to April 30.
What the SHRM-CP fee includes, and what it doesn't
- Application fee. Every rate includes a $50 nonrefundable, nontransferable application fee, which SHRM says defrays the costs of reserving a seat in your window, the score report and a digital certificate if you pass.
- Standard deadline fee. Standard rates also include a $49 nonrefundable standard deadline fee. That is exactly the gap between the early-bird and standard prices.
- Not included. Study materials, prep classes, travel to the test center, and retest, transfer or cancellation fees.
Individuals pay by Visa, Mastercard or American Express when they apply. Because prep is a separate purchase, it helps to know what you would be paying for: compare the 20 free questions with the planned 1,800-question SHRM-CP bank, which isn't on sale yet.
Who qualifies for SHRM-CP member, student and military pricing
- Member pricing. You must be a SHRM member when you submit the application. Joining afterward doesn't change the price.
- Student pricing. SHRM's eligibility page says students must be enrolled in an HR degree program.
- Military pricing. Eligible groups include U.S. service members (active duty, retired and veterans, including Guard and Reserve) who served in HR, personnel management, recruiting or career counseling fields; U.S. military personnel in leadership roles with HR-related duties in any of the 14 BASK functional areas; and spouses of U.S. service members in or entering HR.
- Employer volume pricing. Organizations buying five or more seats pay $374 each for 5 to 9 exams, falling with volume (the handbook's lowest tier is $249 for 150 or more). It doesn't apply to student applicants.
The SHRM pages checked for this guide list no promo codes; the discounts above are the published ones.
Is SHRM membership worth it for the SHRM-CP discount?
Membership saves $100 on every rate in the table. SHRM's membership page lists Professional membership at $299 a year, and its student membership page lists $49 a year, as checked on October 27, 2026. Passy's arithmetic for the exam alone:
| Candidate | Nonmember exam price | Member exam price + one year of membership | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard rate | $499 | $399 + $299 = $698 | Membership costs $199 more |
| Military standard | $469 | $369 + $299 = $668 | Membership costs $199 more |
| Student standard | $299 | $199 + $49 = $248 | Membership saves $51 |
| Student early bird | $250 | $150 + $49 = $199 | Membership saves $51 |
On the exam fee alone, membership pays for itself for students, not for other candidates. Membership has other uses: SHRM's recertification page says it earns 3 professional development credits a year toward the 60 you need every three years, and members pay less to recertify. Whether that is worth $299 depends on what else you would use it for.
SHRM-CP fees after you apply
| Situation | Cost | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Reschedule or cancel 30+ calendar days before your appointment | $45 to Prometric | You cancel, then book again |
| Reschedule or cancel 5 to 29 calendar days before | $60 to Prometric | Same |
| Change within 5 days of your appointment | Not allowed | Treated as a no-show; all fees forfeited |
| Transfer to the next testing window | $150 to SHRM, plus any Prometric cancellation fee | Once per application, next window only |
| Reset fee | $100 to SHRM | Listed in the handbook fee table as once per window; the handbook doesn't say when it applies, so ask SHRM |
| Test-results review after not passing | $100 | Request within 30 days of official results |
| Testing accommodations | No fee | Request when you apply |
| Retake in a later window | Full exam fee | New application; no limit on attempts |
The handbook's no-show list says canceling "less than five business days" before the appointment forfeits fees, while its cancellation section counts five calendar days. Plan any change at least a full week out and both readings are satisfied.
A transfer has its own deadlines: with an appointment, request it at least five business days before; without one, up to the first day of your current window. If you then can't test in the new window, the handbook says you forfeit all fees except in a documented emergency.
SHRM-CP refunds and emergencies
All SHRM certification fees are nonrefundable. The exception is a medical or personal emergency affecting you or an immediate family member that arises within five calendar days of your appointment and prevents you from testing or changing it. You request a transfer or hardship refund within that five-day period, with documentation, and SHRM reviews it case by case. Work commitments and not feeling prepared don't qualify.
Sample SHRM-CP budgets
Passy's arithmetic from SHRM's prices, before study materials and travel:
| Scenario | Exam and change fees | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Nonmember, standard, pass on the first attempt | $499 | $499 |
| Student member (new), standard | $199 + $49 membership | $248 |
| Nonmember, standard, reschedule once 30+ days out | $499 + $45 | $544 |
| Nonmember, standard, transfer to the next window (no appointment booked) | $499 + $150 | $649 |
| Nonmember, standard, not passing and retaking in the next window at standard rate | $499 + $499 | $998 |
The retake line is the one to plan against. A timed 134-question SHRM-CP mock exam is part of the planned full prep, which is one way to check readiness before you pay for an attempt. The SHRM-CP passing score guide explains what happens after a result that isn't a pass.
Keeping the SHRM-CP: recertification costs
SHRM's recertification page sets a three-year cycle that starts the day you pass and ends on the last day of your birth month three years later. Recertifying with 60 professional development credits costs:
| Recertification fee | Member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | $165 | $210 |
| Late (during the 60-day grace period) | $240 | $285 |
If you don't recertify by the end of the grace period, the certification is revoked. You can instead retest at your level within the last 12 months of the cycle, paying the exam fee; SHRM says failing that exam revokes the credential.
Ways to bring the SHRM-CP total down
- Apply in the early-bird period for your window once SHRM publishes 2027 dates; it saves $49.
- Use student or military pricing if you qualify, and check the membership math above.
- Ask your employer about covering the fee or buying seats through SHRM's volume program.
- Military funding. SHRM's eligibility page points service members to each branch's Credentialing Opportunities Online (COOL) site and tuition assistance, and to the Post-9/11 GI Bill for active-duty members, veterans and military spouses.
- Book a date you can keep. Every reschedule costs $45 or $60, and a late change can cost the whole fee.
Study materials are the cost you control most. Passy's full SHRM-CP prep is planned at one-time prices with no subscription, and checkout isn't open yet, so you can review the planned one-time SHRM-CP prep prices without paying anything today. Meanwhile, the free SHRM-CP practice questions show which area needs work, and the SHRM-CP application guide lists the deadlines that decide which rate you pay.
