How to Apply for the SHRM-CP: Testing Windows, Deadlines and Booking at Prometric
SHRM tests the SHRM-CP in two windows a year, and the next one runs December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027, with applications closing December 24. Here are the steps from application to Prometric seat, plus the audit, accommodation and ID rules that can cost you the fee.
Short answer
SHRM offers the SHRM-CP in two testing windows a year. The next runs December 1, 2026, to February 15, 2027; early-bird applications closed August 31, and standard applications close December 24, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. You apply and pay at shrm.org, receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) by email within 10 business days, then book a seat at a Prometric test center; there is no remote option. SHRM had not published 2027 window dates as of October 27, 2026.
The SHRM-CP is not an exam you can book for any week of the year. SHRM tests in two fixed windows, you apply for one specific window, and the application deadline falls weeks before that window ends. Miss the deadline and the next chance is months away; apply late and you may find few seats left. Dates below were checked on SHRM's exam details page and the 2026 handbook on October 27, 2026.
SHRM-CP testing windows and application deadlines
The handbook says the first window runs from May through the middle of July and the second from December through the middle of February of the following year. For 2026:
| Testing window | Early-bird applications | Standard applications | Testing dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 2026 window | Jan. 5 – April 30, 2026 | May 1 – May 29, 2026 (exam page); the handbook says May 26 | May 1 – July 15, 2026 (closed) |
| Second 2026 window | June 3 – Aug. 31, 2026 (closed) | Sept. 1 – Dec. 24, 2026 | Dec. 1, 2026 – Feb. 15, 2027 |
| First 2027 window | Not published | Not published | Expected May through mid-July (handbook pattern), dates not published |
Application deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. ET. SHRM says you must apply during the application period tied to the window you want, and applications must be received by that window's standard deadline. The two sources disagree on the first window's 2026 deadline (May 26 or May 29), a reminder to read the live page, not a remembered date, before you apply for May 2027.
Choosing a window you can test in
The December 24 deadline arrives after the window has already opened, which creates a trap. If you apply on the last day, your ATT can take up to 10 business days, so you may not book until January, with the window closing February 15. The handbook adds that if you put off scheduling and can't find an appointment, all fees are forfeited, and that a reschedule requested less than 30 days before the window closes is not guaranteed a new date. A practical rule: apply early enough to book a date at least a month before the window's last day. If you are still choosing between this window and May, check what full SHRM-CP prep will include before your window opens; checkout isn't open yet.
Applying for the SHRM-CP step by step
The handbook lists these steps:
- Open the application during an open period: go to shrm.org/certification and select Apply Now.
- Sign in with your SHRM membership email if you are a member, using the same single sign-on. Member pricing applies only if you are a member when you submit the application.
- Pick your level. SHRM points you to its tool for choosing between the SHRM-CP and the SHRM-SCP; the SHRM-CP vs. SHRM-SCP guide walks through the rules.
- Select the exam and window and add it to the cart, noting the window dates you are buying.
- Complete the application with your eligibility, job and demographic information. This is also where you request testing accommodations.
- Accept the terms: the handbook, the Candidate Agreement and the refund policy.
- Pay by credit card. Individuals pay with Visa, Mastercard or American Express at the time of application.
- Watch for your ATT. After payment is processed, SHRM emails the Authorization to Test within 10 business days, later if your application is selected for review.
- Book with Prometric at prometric.com/shrm or 888.736.0134 (international candidates use the regional numbers in the handbook's Appendix B).
Fees differ for members, nonmembers, students and military candidates; the SHRM-CP exam cost guide has the full table. Study material is a separate decision: once you know your window, pick a planned SHRM-CP access period that runs through your appointment, whether that is 30, 90 or 180 days.
If SHRM audits your SHRM-CP application
SHRM randomly reviews applications in every window. The handbook and exam page set these rules:
- What you send. Documentation of the HR experience you reported, and of your degree if applicable. SHRM does not contact employers or schools for you.
- Deadline. You are notified by email and have 10 business days to respond.
- Consequences. Not responding in time, or misrepresenting information, means a denied application and forfeiture of all fees, and future applications are automatically selected for review.
- Appeal. A denied applicant can appeal in writing by email to shrmcertification@shrm.org, with supporting evidence, no later than 10 business days after the denial notice.
The SHRM-CP itself requires no HR experience, so the safest approach is simply to report your history accurately and keep records you could produce within two weeks.
Testing accommodations must be requested when you apply
SHRM provides reasonable accommodations, such as extra time or a test reader, for qualifying disabilities under the ADA or a comparable non-U.S. provision, at no fee. The timing rule is strict: mark the accommodation question on the application, then return SHRM's Testing and Certification Accommodations Request form with supporting documentation (the exam page adds that a qualified licensed professional completes the Professional Evaluation). The handbook says forms signed more than six months before the request are not accepted, that SHRM does not want medical records, and that the application does not move forward until the form arrives. SHRM cannot add accommodations to an existing appointment; if a qualifying condition arises after you apply, email shrmcertification@shrm.org.
Booking your SHRM-CP seat at Prometric
When you schedule, the handbook asks for your full name exactly as on the ATT, the Eligibility ID at the top of the ATT, a daytime phone number, the sponsor (SHRM) and the exam (SHRM-CP). Prometric's confirmation number is different from the Eligibility ID, and you need it to change the appointment. SHRM suggests searching a date range of at least 7 to 10 days to see more availability.
No remote SHRM-CP in 2026
SHRM's exam page says the SHRM-CP "must be taken in person at an authorized Prometric testing center." Older pages and the 2025 handbook describe live remote proctoring for U.S. candidates; the 2026 handbook does not offer it. Translated Arabic and Korean forms exist for residents of listed countries, also at test centers only, and residents of those countries can request the English exam in writing.
Name and ID rules that decide whether you test
- Primary ID. An unexpired, original, government-issued photo ID with a signature. If it lacks a photo or signature, bring a secondary ID with the missing element and the same name.
- Name match. The handbook's examples: "Jamie Taylor-Smith" on the application and "Jamie Smith" on the ID is admitted; "William B. Johnson" and "Bill Johnson" is not.
- Name changes. Submit a legal name change in the SHRM certification portal, with documentation, at least 10 business days before your appointment. Minor errors, such as a wrong middle initial, follow the same 10-day notice.
- Arrival. The Prometric testing rules ask you to arrive at least 30 minutes early; arriving 30 minutes or more after your appointment time means you can't test, and the handbook counts arriving more than 30 minutes late as a no-show, with all fees forfeited.
After you book your SHRM-CP date
Enter your appointment date in the free SHRM-CP study planner to get a study outline weighted by SHRM's six content areas, and read the SHRM-CP exam format guide so test day holds no surprises.
